Republic of Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency EVENT REPORT International ECO Symposium on Disaster Economics Organized by AFAD Co-organized by ECO and DPPI SEE 3-5 April 2013, Istanbul/ 1. Topic and Objective of Event and General Information This symposium was contribution to the Disaster Management Training Programme of the Disaster Preparedness and Prevention Initiative for South Eastern Europe (DPPI SEE) for 2013 and was organized by the Republic of Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency and co-organized by DPPI SEE and Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). The training was held at WOW Hotel in İstanbul,. The official language of the symposium was English and simultaneous translation was provided for Russian. The symposium was free of charge for 2 participants per DPPI SEE member country for board and lodging, lectures, printed material, social activities according to the programme and transfer from/to the point of arrival to the WOW Hotel, İstanbul. Academicians, representatives of UNDP, UNISDR, UN OCHA, Swiss Re, Turkish DASK, World Bank, European Union, public sector, private sector and NGO participated in symposium. The main objective of this symposium was to form an economic view of disasters. In this context, symposium covered the economic effects of disasters, sustainable development, and pre-disaster finance, disaster insurance and financial resources for disaster management. Within the framework of symposium:

- Participants were informed about the economic effects of disasters and the relationship between disasters and sustainable development. - Awareness was raised about the importance of pre-disaster finance especially the disaster insurance. - Participants were enlightened about the financial resources for disaster management and emergency relief. - Participants were given Damage and Loss, Assessment (DaLA) Methodolgy, GFDRR - Participants had the opportunity to come together to create a network, to share experience, exchange know-how and learn different implementation methods. 2.
