Role Model Scheme

Introduction We want to employ a diverse workforce that reflects the population we serve: we know that in employing and valuing a diverse workforce we are able to recruit from a wider pool of talent, improve morale, and provide services that are sensitive, responsive appropriate and easy to access. With this in mind we have developed a Role Models Scheme to showcase the diversity in our workforce. We have collected stories from a range of staff with protected characteristics (protected characteristics, under the Equality Act 2010, being; age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, race, religion or belief, gender and sexual orientation, and carer status). We hope that the positive messages from our staff about the jobs that they do, how they got where they are today, and where they are going next will inspire others to apply for jobs in the Trust and motivate our existing staff to develop further in their careers with us. The Role Model stories give us a flavour of the kind of jobs staff are employed in, and development opportunities they have taken to move into higher positions, move across job roles, or improve the quality of service within their job. We also want to inform the community about the range of roles and career options in the NHS beyond doctors and nurses. There are over 70 different job roles within the NHS - all of which can act as a stepping-stone to other professions or types of work.

Joselito Marinas Clinical Skills Training Manager What is your job? Clinical skills training bridges the gap between theory and practice. Joyce Johnson Modern Matron, General Surgery What is your job? What does your role involve? How long have you worked here? How I got to where I am The Modern Matron s role is to be visible as much as possible to patients, their families, and staff and ensure all nursing strategies, Trust protocols and polices, are being maintained and the highest standards of nursing care are achieved at all times. I try to maximise my time by being out on my wards pro-actively supporting my staff where needed. Completing ward rounds, speaking to the nurse in charge ensuring the well being of the staff and patients, I give attention to the general cleanliness of the wards. I frequently meet with Consultants to update them on nursing strategies and audits Over 40 years NHS Cadet Nurse at Broadgreen Hospital School of Nursing Qualified as a State Enrolled Nurse in 1975. State Enrolled Nurse (SEN) on a male orthopaedic ward, I also worked within gynaecology, vascular, a high dependency unit and general surgery. Part time, night duty, SEN at Broadgreen Hospital RGN conversion course at the John Moores University, Liverpool. Staff nurse in General Surgery at the Royal Junior Sister Ward Manager still within general surgery. Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Leadership Course Modern Matron, again within general surgery Modern Matron covering Regional Breast Services, Urology and General Surgery.

Whats next for me? To strive to achieve the highest level of nursing care for all patients placed in my care. I can do this by sharing my own vision of the standards of nursing care, with my staff, as well as the vision of the Trust. I look forward to continuing my career within the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Trust for many years to come. Words of inspiration Where to get further information and advice Completing the RCN Leadership course empowered me to develop my skills and build on my own personal vision of what standards of care I owed to my patients. I try to be a role-model for junior staff who work on my ward, leading by example and reinforcing that the patient is our priority. I have been able to balance the needs of my family and effectively plan my career. I am proud that I have progressed from a cadet nurse in 1971 to my current role as a Modern Matron within the Trust. It is nice to think that I could be seen as a role model for nurses who are only just starting out on their nursing career aspirations.
