Assessment of service users meeting the CHC criteria Liaison with other agencies and teams both internal and external PERSONAL PROFILE I began my career in Mental Health at the age of 18 working as a student nurse at Rainhill Hospital Prescot Merseyside qualifying in June 1980 as a Registered Mental Health Nurse. I worked as a staff nurse on an older adult mental health ward completing my preceptorship before moving to Rampton Hospital it Retford Nottinghamshire to undertake Learning Disability Nurse training. This experience was extremely interesting and poignant and included caring for adults children and older adults with varying degrees of learning disabilities. Following completion of this training I moved to the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary to complete general nurse training. Although I did complete all the training I failed to pass the multiple choice paper of the final examination and as I was Pregnant with my first child I did not re-sit a decision that I have regretted throughout my career I went on to have four children two of whom where twins. My Career development at this point had by necessity to take a back step whilst I cared for my very young family, I did however return to Mental Health Nursing which was and still is my passion and worked for eight years on a female adult mental health ward working night duty. This allowed me to fulfil my role as a mum whilst still retaining and developing my Mental health skills. When my youngest children started school I was successful in obtaining the post of ward sister on an adult mental health ward. The ward was very big in comparison with today s standards having 38 acute female beds. It was extremely busy challenging and very rewarding. I learned a huge amount developing and improving my managerial organisational and leadership skills. It had become clear to me throughout my career that Mental Illness can have a devastating effect on individuals and indeed can ruin both young and older lives. It has always been my mantra that service users need and deserve the best care possible and I have always striven to deliver this personally and via the staff teams that I have managed. Following various management roles within Wigan and Leigh as above I left to take up the post of Home Manager within North Mersey Community NHS trust.. This Later became Merseycare NHS trust. On appointment it was my role to design commission and recruit staff for a continuing mental health care unit for people suffering from severe and enduring mental health problems who could Page 4

5 not be cared for in ordinary residential settings for a variety of reasons. I believe this role to have been one of the most challenging yet rewarding in my career and I felt very privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead on this project. Personal Qualities I have excellent organisational and leadership skills. I have a naturally bubbly and friendly personality with the ability to use authority appropriately.i am able to establish and sustain quality professional relationships with both staff service users and their carers. I enjoy a challenge and am able to motivate others and work through resistance, to get the job done effectively and in a timely manner. I remain passionate about mental health care and treatment, to this end I have recently been contracted to undertake inspections for the Care Quality Commission. I have also returned part time to clinical practice which I have found extremely fulfilling. I remain committed to ensuring that service users and carers receive the best quality of mental health care possible. Page 5
