Master of Science in Nursing

Graduate nursing courses are presented in Ursuline s value-based framework and emphasize the clinical components of advanced practice nursing. All students enrolled in the program take the master s core courses to enhance clinical reasoning and utilize evidence-based practice. Through the advanced practice core, students develop the knowledge and skills to become advanced practice nurses. THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NURSING The Breen School of Nursing at Ursuline College offers a Master of Science degree in Nursing. The program s mission is to transform the health of the community through reflection and healing interaction with individuals and organizations. Nurses may select from the following areas of study: Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Family Nurse Practitioner Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist A subspecialty in Palliative Care or Nursing Education may be added Post-Master s Certificates are offered in the following: Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Family Nurse Practitioner Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist Palliative Care Practitioner Nursing Education Additional offering: MSN/MBA dual degree program. There is an emphasis on health maintenance, disease prevention, counseling and patient education. The courses for the AGNP are listed below: NR 615 Advanced Diagnostics 3 NR 636 Adult Health Disease Management 3 NR 635 Focused Populations: Gender Specific Health Issues, Geriatrics and Adolescents 3 NR 616, 617, 618, 619 Clinical Management Courses / Practicum 4 Total Credits with Core Courses 39 family nurse practitioner (43 credits) The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track builds on the content from the Adult- Gerontology Nurse Practitioner course work and prepares students to provide primary health care to individuals and families across the life cycle. The FNP student must complete all course work for the Adult Nurse in addition to the following course: NR 638 Advanced Pediatrics with Clinicals 4 Total Credits with Core Courses 43

The Graduate Nursing program accepts students for the fall and spring semesters. adult-gerontology clinical nurse specialist (39 credits) This track incorporates all the core courses of the MSN with three specialty courses in Adult Health Management, Disease Management and Teaching and Evaluation. Graduates are prepared to assume roles as Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialists (AGCNS) to integrate care across the continuum while working to continuously improve patient outcomes and nursing care. NR 601 Adult Health Management 3 NR 636 Adult Health Disease Management 3 NR 640 Teaching and Evaluation 3 NR 611, 612, 613, 614 Clinical Management Courses / Practicum 4 Total Credits with Core Courses 39 post master s certificate of completion A Post Master s Certificate may be obtained as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Educator or Palliative Care Practitioner. To obtain a Post Master s Certificate a student must take the associated specialty courses. In addition, a student must document completion of advanced practice Core Courses (Advanced Physiology, Advanced Health Assessment and Advanced Pharmacology) and the required Health Promotion, Maintenance and Restoration course. palliative care practitioner certificate of completion The Palliative Care subspecialty is offered to students preparing for advanced practice roles or as a post master s for MSN prepared nurses. NR 633 Foundations of Palliative Care I 4 nursing education The Nursing Education subspecialty is offered for students preparing to be an Adult- Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner or Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist. A Post Master s nurse may also take the education courses to receive a nurse educator certificate. Admission Requirements 1. Application for Graduate Studies including the 500-1,000 word essay. Applications for admission may be submitted in paper form or online at ursuline.edu. 2. Non-refundable $25 application fee. 3. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university. 4. Official transcript(s) for bachelor s degree and any additional undergraduate or graduate academic coursework including one that verifies completion of an accredited baccalaureate program in nursing. These must be forwarded to the Office of Graduate Admission directly by the academic institution. 5. Evidence of ability to do graduate work as indicated by a recommended 3.0 GPA shown on applicant s transcript(s) from the baccalaureate nursing program. 6. Three recommendations utilizing the required recommendation form. Recommendations should be written by appropriate professionals attesting to the suitability of the applicant for graduate work in the particular program. The recommendation form may be found on our website. Suggested reference include: one from a previous instructor, one from an advanced practice nurse and one from a work supervisor. 7. Completion of an interview, if requested, with the program director and/or graduate faculty. 8. Current licensure or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio. 9. A current resume reflecting a minimum of one year work experience as a registered nurse. 10. International students, in addition to the above requirements, must also comply with Ursuline s procedures for admission as an international student.
