Jewish Foundation School of Staten Island Weekly Newsletter April 26, 2013 Iyar, 5773
ELC The Toddlers were so excited to complete their own Hungry Caterpillar book. It was a great way to incorporate literacy, crafts and counting into a fun-filled project. The letter V was the letter of the week in Nursery. We painted our V using the color violet and also learned that a violet is a flower. We are looking forward to a delicious vegetable party on Friday. We also made a special project for Lag B omer.
ELC Kindergarten devoted the week to Lag B omer. The students made hats to wear on Lag B omer and created a special project about friends by using paper dolls. We discussed why friends are special and why every child is also special. We enjoyed an edible bonfire made out of pretzels and nibs. Primer children are learning about the significance of Sefirat Ha omer and why we celebrate Lag B omer, the 33 rd day of the Omer. Our letter of the week was mem and the vowel was zere. Our dino unit continued with lots of dinosaur fun. The children made dinosaur t-shirts and enjoyed a dino dig using paleontologist s tools. We even excavated for dinosaur bones, which were really chocolate chips in a cookie! We began a unit on bugs, insects and the ug family. We are looking forward to a buggy good time. On Friday the entire ELC will celebrate Lag B omer together with a special program. Morah Music will entertain us and we are anticipating a great time singing and dancing to her music. We will cool off afterwards with some delicious watermelon.
Students in grades 1-8 participated in a Stop Bullying program this week. Mr. Bud Jeffries, one of the strongest men in the world, had the students complete attention by performing amazing feats of strength! His message was bullying is not cool and that we should all strive to be the best that we can be and to strive to develop our own individual strengths. He captured everyone s attention and the positive message he sent to the audience was unforgettable. JFS learned about bullying with Mr. Bud Jeffries. He taught the school that the number one thing is to treat people with respect. Bud is one of the strongest men in the world. He does stunts and sets world records. He told us about his life and family. Bud told us if you see anyone being bullied, you should stand up for them. Bullying does not show strength, but it does show weakness. Being different makes the world different and better. It also makes the world possible. Don t let a bully bring you down! Avital Dvoyakin 4C Today we had a man named Bud Jeffries come to our school. He showed us some really cool stuff like Rabbi Ehrlich dropping a bowling bowl on Bud s stomach. When I was listening to Bud, his main point that he was trying to show us was that you can do anything you want you just have to believe and never give up. Bud s other main point was showing us that bullying is not ok and you can have friends even if you re a little different on the outside. That s what makes the world a better place. Bud s main point was do what you want to do and never give up trying. Marielle Braunstein 5R

4C Science Science can be very explosive if you are in class 4C. The students learned about matter. They discussed physical and chemical changes. They then decided to try to create a chemical change. They mixed Coca Cola and Mentos. The results were a burst of foam and a crowd of excited students. A fast chemical change can be a blast.
5Z Class 5Z read the Boy in the Striped Pajamas. This book told the story of two boys who came from completely different backgrounds yet they were able to forge an everlasting relationship. The strong relationship in this friendship led the students in our class to analyze what true friendship means to them. Each student was then asked to write five stories about personal experiences with their own friends. The are currently publishing their stories in special books. They are looking forward to sharing these books with their family and friends.
5R Doctors, Chefs, Sports, Broadcasters! 5R wrote essays about their future professions and accomplishments, twenty years from now. The students wrote about the people who inspired them to become successful and helped them along the way. They even made certificates acknowledging their achievements. Stop by to meet the teachers, restaurateurs and actors of the future!
Look who s been spotted doing a Mitzvah! Laurence Sokolovsky was spotted doing a Mitzvah. When he saw Mrs. Emily Milstein carrying a heavy box, he ran to help her carry it. We are very proud of him. Morah Sheila was so proud of Jordan Greenberg. There was an issue in the lunchroom and he came forward and told the truth. He made Morah Sheila so proud of him. Ezra Brum is a very sensitive and caring friend. He received an ices for bentching well and he gave it to his friend when he saw that his friend felt bad that he did not receive one. Ezra is a very special young man.

Our Parsha Corner Parshat Emor Speak to the children of Israel and tell them the holidays they should keep. For six days work can be performed but on the seventh day it is a complete rest day. A holy occasion, you shall not perform any work. It is Shabbat to Hashem and all your dwelling places. The question is, if the Torah is talking about holidays, why does it mention Shabbat? If you count the holidays: two days Pesach, one day Shavuot, one day Rosh Hashanah and two days Sukkot the total is six days. The seventh day is Yom Kippur, which is referred to in the Torah as Shabbat Shabbatot. The Torah is talking about Yom Kippur and not a regular Shabbat. Ellen Schmerler and Leehe Day 6G
