Outsourced Accounting Services Help CFOs Succeed Case Study Interview Performed by Directive Consulting PROJECT SUMMARY: Basis 365 Accounting was recommended to provide reliable outsourced accounting services so a CFO can effectively deliver his or her strategic advice. FEEDBACK SUMMARY: Basis 365 Accounting is commended for their ability to correct accounting information, update processes to ensure timely reporting, and exceed expectations by providing proactive communication. Basis 365 is recommended for any business.

BACKGROUND Please briefly describe what services you provide your customers and what makes you unique / special? My name is Robert Burger and I'm a partner with B2B CFO, the largest CFO services firm in the country. Several things make us unique - each of our partners is a CFO w at least 25 years experience. We work with clients directly. We also provide exit services, so we are trained and certified in helping business owners execute and plan a successful transition into a new business. We have unique, proprietary software and books which our clients benefit from, and because of our size, with over 230 partners nationwide, we have got relationships with large organizations such as Intuit, Morgan Stanley and we can bring a lot of high-level service to our clients. I ve been a partner for five years. OPPORTUNITY/CHALLENGE What business/accounting challenge were you trying to address (before collaborating with) Basis 365? The challenge was getting timely and accurate financials, getting good narratives of results and communications and responsiveness. All of those things were lacking when I first engaged with this client at the end of last year.

SOLUTION How did you come to work with Basis 365? So the business owner and I looked at various options, and we narrowed it down to a couple. I contacted my partners and asked if they d had experience with a couple of different firms and Basis 365 was one of them. One partner who I happen to know for many years told me that he personally knew the principals [at Basis 365] and thought very highly of them and the firm and highly recommended them. So I shared that with the client, and that s how we started. I had an in-depth interview with the principles, and then we had a group interview with the business owner, his key managers, and myself with the principles. We were very favorably impressed and decided to go forward. What were you nervous or apprehensive about before agreeing to work with Basis 365? I wasn t apprehensive. We watched the whole process very closely because the client had a situation before where certain things were promised and didn t come true. So from the start, Basis 365 was really under a microscope to make sure that things went well. I tried to stay closely involved with the oversight, not the actual implementation and transition, making sure the lines of communication were there. So I d say we started out not nervous about Basis, but extremely on our toes to make sure that things came together as promised.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK I haven t dealt with other providers that are so proactive about keeping the client informed, bringing up problems that have been run into, discussing pros and cons. How has having Basis 365 do the outsourced accounting help for you to provide services to your client? Oh, immensely. My goal is to start where the accounting department leaves off and to get into analysis, forecasting, and putting together info for outsiders. I rely on the books being closed accurately and timely. I depend on the folks doing the accounting to be communicative and forthcoming with problems and issues, and for themselves to have a very strong understanding of proper accounting guidelines and GAAP. So the switch from the previous provider to Basis 365 made the entire accounting process work effortlessly, timely, responsibly, and responsively, so that I could check in, make sure everything was going well and not have to feel like I had to dig in and help to fix things. My mandate isn t to work on the accounting but to work with accountants to make sure that things are right, and then take things forward from there.

What was implementation like? How long did it take? How, specifically, did Basis 365 meet/not meet/exceed your expectations? I will say that Basis 365 met or exceeded my expectations. In terms of how long it took, we had a schedule, and we stuck to it, and we achieved the milestones and the results that were represented. This is no easy feat because it wasn t a simple transition. There was some repair to do in terms of what had been in the books before, some retroactive corrections and changes in methodology that were necessary And that was all taken on and resolved very well responsibly. Do you feel that you have the accounting data now to provide high-value work to your client? Yes, I do. I feel like I can rely on what the books have. I feel that we have a clear schedule for when things happen and a process for resolving problems or questions when they arise. How did Basis 365 perform from a project management standpoint? They did well. Paul was the lead on making sure this happened, and he took charge in terms of saying the milestones and working proactively with the client. He was very responsive to my questions, concerns, and my suggestions on methodology. He was very proactive, and this last one was the key to success: he was very proactive about communicating - setting up meetings to update the business owner and myself on how things were going, on what s been achieved, etc.

What kind of feedback have you received from your client regarding the collaboration between you and Basis 365? He s very happy. His feedback both directly to Paul and me, is that he was very pleased with the transition and results and feels that we have achieved the goal of getting the accounting processes onto a new platform and working well. Now, of course, there s always more to do, it s a continual moving process. In terms of progress made so far, I ve gotten some very positive feedback from the business owner. In terms of progress made so far, I ve gotten some very positive feedback from the business owner. What distinguishes Basis 365 from other providers? One thing that stands out is the communication. I haven t dealt with other providers that are so proactive about keeping the client informed, bringing up problems that have been run into, discussing pros and cons. There s a high level of professionalism and competence in getting work done and done right and on time. In terms of client relations and communication, I d say that s a real differentiator for Basis 365.

Is there anything Basis 365 could have improved or done differently? Nothing jumps to mind. How do you see your company and Basis 365 working together in the future? Are there any new areas you d like to explore? I certainly would recommend Basis 365 to other clients and I have certainly recommended them to my partners who are looking for a firm to serve their clients when their clients need an improvement or change. It would certainly be a good reference for them, for my clients and my partners clients. That d be my first thought. I would also welcome the opportunity if Basis 365 has clients that they serve and they d like someone who does what I do. I know they do provide some sort of CFO service, but if they have a client who wants to start planning their transition and want someone to help them with that, I would certainly enjoy working with them again under those circumstances. Anything else you d like to share about working with Basis 365? I d like to give a special tip of the hat to Paul because he was the lead on the entire transition process and he took full responsibility from end to end.

I certainly would recommend Basis 365 to other clients and I have certainly recommended them At no point was there any sense that if something went off the rails that he d expect someone else to fix it. I thought working with him was a really positive experience, I can t overstate that. A great job with Paul Burke on this transition and moving forward.
