The Olive Tree The sacred tree of olive, was always supposed to be a symbol of peace, fertility, prosperity & euphoria. It is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world - being grown before the written language was invented. According to the ancient Greek myth, the olive tree was the present of goddess Athena, when she competed god Poseidon. It was she who brought the olive to the Greeks, as a gift. Zeus, the king of Greek Gods, had promised to give Attica (the peninsula where Athens is located) to the god or goddess who would made the most useful invention. Athena's gift of the olive, was useful for light, heat, food, medicine and perfume and was picked as a more peaceful invention than Poseidon's horse - touted as a rapid and powerful instrument of war. Athena planted the original olive tree on a rocky hill which we know today as the Acropolis. The Greeks connected their life with the olive tree and its fruits, for many purposes. (Culinary, body emollient, other uses of olive oil include lotions, soaps, body oil, medicinal purposes, hair and skin tonic, salve, anointment oil and lamp oil).
