Mission 5
Foundation Established Sept. 2012 OpenStack Mission: To produce the ubiquitous open source cloud computing platform that will meet the needs of public and private cloud providers regardless of size, by being simple to implement and massively scalable. 6
Mission Design Tenets 8
Project Design Tenets Scalability and elasticity are our main goals Any feature that limits our main goals must be optional Everything should be asynchronous If you can't do it async, see #2 All required components must be horizontally scalable Always use shared nothing architecture or sharding Distribute everything, especially logic Move logic to where state naturally exists Accept eventual consistency Test everything We require tests with submitted code Source: wiki.openstack.org/basicdesigntenets 9

Mission Design Tenets 12 Project Principles
Project Principles Open Source Open development model 13 All code is freely available Licensed under the Apache 2.0 License Open design process Blueprints Design Summit every six months to gather requirements and write specifications for next release Open community
Developer Community Led by Tech Committee Leads the software direction and development for openstack. Over 300,000 lines of python code Each project is lead by a PTL Releases are on a 6 month schedule The start of a cycle It usually lasts 4 weeks, with the Design Summit on the third week. Focus on what we want to do for the next release We discuss it with our peers to get their feedback and comments, and create blueprints 14 Describes how we want to do it. PTLs may use Launchpad blueprints to track the Planning stage, and in particular their "Design" field. Blueprints tracked by Release Management throughout the cycle and targeted to a specific milestone (to give the various stakeholders an idea on when the feature will land).
Industry Backing 16
SUSE Cloud Computing Strategy Public Cloud: Broadly deploy SUSE Linux Enterprise Server through SUSE Cloud Service Provider Program Private Cloud: Deliver cloud infrastructure solution powered by OpenStack Hybrid Cloud: Tightly integrate SUSE Studio and SUSE Manager with SUSE Cloud to deliver a platform and tools that enable enterprise hybrid clouds 17
Why SUSE Chooses OpenStack 18 Customer demand for an OpenStack solution Has the greatest industry support and most vibrant community among open source cloud software projects In the long-run the vibrancy of the community will lead to more rapid innovation than competing projects The formation of the OpenStack Foundation helps to ensure: Long-term viability of the project Project's development goals benefit industry and not one vendor
