Infrared reflection for exterior coatings

Long live color! The sun supports all life on earth yet in some cases it has a damaging effect. Sunlight heats up the colored surfaces of buildings, which can raise the internal temperature. ALTIRIS pigments can help to improve the performance of your coating system by delivering high solar reflectance, in whatever color you or your customers choose. Huntsman's ALTIRIS infrared reflecting pigments for exterior coatings can give any color the power to reflect solar energy. Weathering tests using ALTIRIS pigments have already shown exceptional performance across a spectrum of color formulations in the most durable systems. ALTIRIS infrared reflecting pigments......solar reflection for every color under the sun

THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE OF THE SUN IS 10,000F

COOL ROOFING COULD REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS OF $27 BILLION* * Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimate 2008

Sustainable interior cooling... When solar energy is absorbed by exterior surfaces it can place heavy loads on air-conditioning systems which can increase energy usage and related CO 2 emissions. Without air-conditioning, internal temperatures can increase throughout the day making the internal environment uncomfortable. One of the best ways to reduce internal temperatures is to reflect away solar rays. This can be achieved by using exterior coatings containing ALTIRIS infrared reflecting pigments....for measurable benefits Reducing the heat travelling through exterior surfaces by reflecting solar energy has several potential benefits: Reduced cost Reduced air-conditioning loads could save energy and associated energy costs whilst also increasing the air-conditioning unit lifespan Increased comfort Improved comfort for occupants where air-conditioning is not an option Reduced maintenance Reduced roof and facade maintenance due to lower heat cycling stresses Less pollution Reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions through reduced air-conditioning use

What is solar reflectance? The sun s energy reaches earth as a combination of visible light that allows us to see color, infrared wavelengths that cause most heating, and ultraviolet rays. The largest contribution to a structure s internal heat gain is from infrared rays. We have designed ALTIRIS pigments to reflect away solar energy, specifically the heat-generating infrared energy.

INFRARED ENERGY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR 53% OF THE SUN S HEATING EFFECT

ALTIRIS PIGMENTS COULD INCREASE REFLECTANCE BY OVER 100% * *Based on Huntsman customer product analysis

Optimizing color... ALTIRIS infrared reflecting pigments give formulators the flexibility to achieve high infrared reflection without affecting color; coating manufacturers can engineer products that have specific colors, with optimized solar reflectance....and reflectance ALTIRIS pigments can dramatically increase solar reflectance by more than 100 percent in some color ranges. *Colors similar to RAL numbers quoted, coating thickness range 16-25 microns, TSR measurements taken using Cary 5000 spectrophotometer. **Standard coating containing TIOXIDE pigment and colored pigment - formulations available on request.

For all coating systems... ALTIRIS pigments can bring real benefits to a wide range of coating systems across a variety of applications including coated steel coil, applied marine coatings, automotive finishes, and hand painted roofs and facades....benefits include Design freedom Offering a wide range of colors at a leading total solar reflectance level enables design freedom and flexibility for customers to use the colors they want in their materials of choice Future proofing Exceeding building code requirements for solar reflectance is possible for many colors using ALTIRIS pigments Simple to use ALTIRIS pigments are easy to disperse and incorporate into sophisticated color systems Responsibility ALTIRIS infrared reflecting pigments contain no added heavy metals, and in some formulations less colored pigment can be used

WE HAVE ALREADY FORMULATED 100s OF DIFFERENT COLORS

HUNTSMAN HAS OVER 75 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN THE COATINGS INDUSTRY
