Vehicle Electronics Services and Solutions to Manage the Complexity

INNOVATIONS & DEVELOPMENT CYCLES Commercial vehicle manufacturers are experiencing a technological change. In addition to the rising proportion of electrical and electronic components, the distribution of functions between these components in the vehicles has moved closer to the focus of the development. Domain-specific architectures and function-oriented software design are at the beginning and are indispensable before the implementation. Electronic systems play a decisive role, both prior to the development of the vehicle and later during its ongoing development. Nowadays, they are the yardstick against which the degree of innovation is measured. New electronic systems and functionalities offer manufacturers the possibility to differentiate themselves from the competition in the public perception. The proportion of electronics in the overall equipment of a commercial vehicle has now risen to as much as 50% and the trend is upwards. Factors such as innovations, shortening product lifecycles and development times as well as increasing competition and further pressure on costs are the main driving forces behind the progress in the commercial vehicle industry. We perceive our task as advising you in integrating these innovations and to support you in any conceivable way. KNOW-HOW & EXPERIENCE Technology and methodology consulting Selecting the optimum technologies and methods and using them correctly are both the basis for and the driving force behind corporate innovation. Adapting proven automotive technologies is a rapid and efficient way to guarantee in-house innovative potential. The manufacturers in the automotive area have to face the implementation of the legal requirements earlier than the commercial vehicle area. The introduction of a new method as well as a marketspecific adaptation of a solution demands a consistent and standardised approach. Our range of services includes the knowledge and selection of methods for tackling certain problems as well as how to introduce and adapt these methods to customers processes. Through our active participation in the technology and innovation network of the ESG Group, we gain access to state-of-the-art technologies, methods and standards in the areas of automotive, aerospace and logistics. EMBEDDED SYSTEM AND SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT Software is making an increasing contribution to commercial vehicles and is set to become more and more of a strategic product component in the vehicle manufacturer s arsenal. Software is used for implementing classic vehicle functions as well as innovations resulting from networking. Furthermore, the power train is the heart of any commercial vehicle. Designing the electronic and software system for a vehicle is a very difficult task, since the requirements in the various lifecycle processes are extremely extensive and multifaceted. In the area of embedded systems in particular, it is necessary to take account of the complicated interactions between control unit software, sensor/actuator systems and mechatronic components. In order to solve a complex design problem, a development process is needed, which takes account of all development phases from dealing with requirements and boundary conditions through to approval of the system. System definition System test Systems engineering Systems engineering involves integrating all technical parameters as well as ensuring that all physical, functional and technical interfaces are compatible. INTEGRATION & TESTING COMPLEX EMBEDDED ELECTRONICS (EE) SYSTEMS Important preconditions for a smooth integration of electronic systems and successful testing are active exchanging of information and close cooperating between the development and test departments of both the manufacturer and the suppliers. System integration represents a key pillar in the development process according to the V-Model. This is where the alignment between the required and the implemented functionalities takes place. Integration concepts and detailed timetables have to be prepared for integration on the various system levels (component, subsystem, overall system). The crucial basis for a successful verification of functions is elaborated test strategies that can assure working vehicle functionality including the variants. Before the actual testing can start, the scope of the system and the tests must be agreed together with the technical departments. If needed, ServiceXpert can furnish the necessary test equipment and test software to validate the electrical system properties according to the system validation process. There are various different ways of implementing integration and test platforms: in the laboratory at lab trucks and prototype cars as well as on the real vehicle. If any components or subsystems are not available, they must be simulated using suitable tools. Experienced test engineers from ServiceXpert and the ESG Group are at your disposal for these tasks. ENGINEERING DATA MANAGEMENT The actuality and compatibility of all vehicle data throughout the entire vehicle lifecycle is a very important prerequisite for internal and external processes to take place efficiently. This is based on methods and systems for engineering data management. The main demand on requirements engineering is to have a system and process description that is structured, function-oriented and consolidated and which can be used to generate tender specifications. Requirements management creates and continues the documents and processes started in the development phase throughout the entire product lifecycle. New and modified technical requirements will be integrated into the overall system of the vehicle. Furthermore, aspects realised and implemented during the development process must be checked and continuously readapted in terms of compatibility and configuration management. Networked systems and distributed functions of a vehicle electrical system have to have an excellent compatibility management which guarantees the system integrity in the long term. One main task of the configuration management is to identify and provide a dedicated system configuration at a certain moment in time in order to permit control and traceability throughout the entire software lifecycle. ServiceXpert s service portfolio includes the concept and implementation of IT systems for engineering data management based on content management systems (CMS). INTEGRATED DIAGNOSTICS Reliable and efficient repair of malfunctions and component defects is one of the major challenges of commercial vehicle manufacturers while the complexity of the vehicle is increasing especially in respect of a high grade of networked functions and systems. The diagnostic functions required for repair, maintenance and end-of-line programming must be suitably distributed throughout the vehicle and test and diagnostics equipments. This requires a clear diagnostic strategy and implementation concept for the individual lifecycle processes. The increasing standardisation of the ECU architecture (AUTOSAR) and the MCD profile in the ASAM model provide significant support for this implementation concept. Onboard diagnostics In case of a malfunction the ECU fault detection function triggers an error handling routine that causes an entry in the fault memory of the ECU. Using a diagnostic tester this entry can be read out subsequently. Withal the real challenge is the interpretation of the fault memory entries and definitively tracking down the malfunction in case the vehicle function is distributed via several ECUs. Services for onboard diagnostics Use of diagnostics methods Set up of diagnostics infrastructure Development and test of diagnostics functions Diagnostics of distributed functions Vehicle Control unit (ECU) Services relating to diagnostic strategy Distribution of onboard and offboard quota Management of lifecycle processes Diagnostics plant standard Offboard diagnostics During production and in the after-sales service the vehicle electrical system is connected to a diagnostic tester. Via the diagnostics connecting interface (plug) all ECUs with implemented diagnostic function can be connected and the fault memory can be read out. The received information is used to identify errors as well as to select and set parameters for test sequences used in functions and components. ServiceXpert operates since 2007 its own diagnostics centre in Hamburg, where the experience and know-how from numerous projects in onboard and offboard diagnostics of several market segments is collected and concentrated and offered to its costumers.
