Castrol Hypuron Advanced Formula 1W-3 Diesel Engine Oil A new level of extended-drain-interval performance Summary Castrol Hypuron Advanced Formula 1W-3 sets a new standard of performance for diesel engine oil. This part-synthetic formula was designed to allow users to safely extend oil drain intervals up to 7, miles or 9 hours.* Hypuron AF 1W-3 enables this extreme extended drain interval while still providing all of the engine protection expected from the high-quality Hypuron brand. This paper provides development and field-test results that support the extended-drain-interval performance of Hypuron AF 1W-3. *In conjunction with a proper used oil analysis program like Castrol Labcheck. Product Description Hypuron AF 1W-3 is a part-synthetic heavy duty diesel engine oil formulated to meet: API CJ-4 Cummins CES 281 Mack EO-O Premium Plus Volvo VDS-4 CAT ECF-3 Detroit Fluid Specification 93K218 2 BP Lubricants USA, Inc.

This, coupled with very good shear stability, means that this oil will mildly increase in viscosity to an SAE 4 grade. This is anticipated and acceptable. Hypuron AF 1W-3 has the same high level of starting TBN as Hypuron W-4. As will be shown in the field test section, the TBN retention profile is quite good. This oil has a mixed detergent system, with roughly equal concentrations of calcium and magnesium, and is easily distinguished from Hypuron W- 4 and Tection Extra W-4 on that basis. Also, this oil features both molybdenum and boron. Hypuron AF 1W-3 contains no sodium or potassium. The pour point of this oil is very low and it has excellent starting performance in cold weather. 2 BP Lubricants USA, Inc.

Field and Customer Testing This section describes the results of two tests that were used to develop and validate the performance of Hypuron AF 1W-3. Charts including used oil analysis data are included as a means of demonstrating excellent performance in the areas of wear control, oxidation resistance, and TBN retention. Charts 1 and 2 show wear metals, chart 3 shows TBN retention, and chart 4 shows oxidation. Chart shows the viscosity data note that some thickening out of grade does occur at long drain intervals. Test #2 Test #2 is ongoing with a refuse customer in New Brunswick, NJ. The test vehicles predominantly have Mack engines; there are some CAT engines as well. This is a large test with more than 6 vehicles. The goal of the test is to extend the drain from 4 hours with Tection Extra to 9 hours with Hypuron AF 1W- 3. As the data shown in the following tables demonstrate, the oil is performing very well in this application.
