Ricoh at EcoPrint 2012. Sow the seeds for sustainable growth. EcoPrint Live 2012 26/27 September. Berlin
Ricoh and the environment Since our company was established over 75 years ago we have placed great importance on lowering the environmental impact we have on our surroundings and on society, in accordance with the beliefs of our founder, Kiyoshi Ichimura. Our commitment to sustainability is a part of our heritage, touching every part of our company, from manufacturing to distribution, business sites to recycling. Over the decades we have extended our environmental strategy to include all stakeholders, raising awareness and providing tangible ecological and cost benefits to suppliers and customers alike. Milestones Since our first environmental office was created in Japan in 1976, we have achieved several ecological firsts: In the 1980s we were the first to introduce Multi Functional Printers, reducing energy waste and cost. In 2001 we achieved Zero-Waste-to-Landfill at all major production sites. Since 1999, our UK manufacturing site alone has diverted over 12000 tonnes of waste from landfill. By 2002, every operating office of Ricoh globally had achieved ISO 14001 accreditation. In 2003 we became the first Asian firm to win the World Environment Centre Gold Medal. We were the first in our industry to use plant-based plastics in our devices. In 2009 we launched the world s first Biomass toner for certain products in Japan.
Sustainability is part of our DNA We extend our passion to protect the environment to encompass all areas of our global business even our suppliers and their practices stand within our environmental responsibility. Our Eco Balance approach to people, the planet and profits ensures our sustainable business model is continuously improved to support our business and environmental objectives. Ricoh is committed to reducing CO 2 emissions from its business processes by 88% by 2050 (compared to 2000 results) with an interim target of 30% by 2030. The original target to reduce emissions by 20% by 2010 was achieved six months early. Our global CO 2 footprint has been reduced by 45000 tonnes since 2007. Product Lifecycle At Ricoh we consider the full product lifecycle from design to disposal. We focus on three key phases: pre-use, in-use and post-use. All three are united by distribution and logistics. However each phase also has its own specific environmental impacts, which require a different focus. In the pre-use stage (Development, Procurement and Production) we ensure an environmentally conscious development of our innovative products with eco technology. It takes into account the in-use phase and also the post-use phase of our products. During the in-use stage (usage and maintenance) we offer smart sustainable solutions saving costs on paper and energy. Our comprehensive eco offering includes sustainable consultancy, carbon reduction programmes and supporting business tools to ensure lower carbon emissions and reduced costs. Recognition In 2010 Ricoh Europe achieved a 5 star Recognised for Excellence award from EFQM. We remain the largest, most complex organisation to have achieved this level of recognition. In 2012 Ricoh was recognised by the FTSE4Good Index Series for the ninth consecutive year, following an analysis of its corporate social responsibility activities. We are the only company in our industry to be included in the 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the world for the last eight years running. In 2012, Ricoh was recognised by global consulting firm Deloitte as one of the top global organisations ready for a green and inclusive economy in its first Zero Impact Growth Monitor 2012. To minimise the environmental impact during the post-use stage, we offer a variety of comprehensive and easy to use return, recover and recycle programmes.
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle The three Rs represent Ricoh s fundamental message for resource conservation, and our recycling programmes for toner cartridges and end of life equipment ensure we maximise this opportunity as well as comply with all relevant legislation. We are committed to reducing environmental impacts at all stages of our products lifecycle including helping and guiding our customers to reduce the in-house impacts of their document management and printing activities. Reduce The in-use phase of the product lifecycle accounts for more than 60% of the total lifecycle environmental impacts. Ricoh is focused on reducing this burden for customers through product innovation that optimises document processes while also achieving lower energy consumption and reducing paper consumption. Ricoh s CO 2 reduction programmes and consultancy services help to reduce the emissions and the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) from document production. Our Sustainability Optimisation Programme offers immediate and measurable results in the enterprise or office printing environment, while our Carbon Balanced Printing Programme is designed for print service providers in the commercial printing or in-house print room (CRD) market. Both programmes work in the same way firstly we calculate the current CO 2 emissions, we then optimise this to reduce it and then any remaining, unavoidable emissions are neutralised by the acquisition of Carbon Emission Reductions (CERs) or carbon credits that have been generated by clean energy projects in which Ricoh has invested.
Recycle We are pleased to be able to offer our customers a simple way to return their used original Ricoh materials free of charge with our Resource Smart Return programme. The Ricoh Resource Smart Return programme is a valuable Return and Recycling programme that minimises the impact of copier and printer consumables on the environment. To enable us to recover these components, Ricoh established centralised return programmes to ensure reuse and/or material recovery at our factories in Europe. This service is free of charge and available in most European countries. For used service parts replaced by our European field service engineers, we have established collection and treatment centres to receive, sort, recycle and, whenever possible, reuse these products within or outside the Ricoh Group. Service parts returned from our service engineers are collected and sorted in dedicated Green Centres, which will decide the best way to recycle. Reuse Ricoh goes further than just recycling we totally revitalise some of our printers. A range of thorough overhauling and testing procedures ensures that every Ricoh certified GreenLine device delivers the reliable, productive and efficient service that you d expect from a brand new Ricoh printer. These products are highly economical and their resource recirculation process produces 40% fewer carbon emissions over their lifetime. Each GreenLine product is stripped, cleaned and checked, worn components are replaced and the hard disc drive is sanitised. The product is then re-assembled and thoroughly tested before shipping. The GreenLine processes are governed by ISO14001 and ISO 9001 management systems. Reusing a product not only extends the material s lifecycle, but it also gives a higher return on the energy initially spent on its manufacture. Therefore, it s one of the most effective forms of environmental impact reduction.
Eco technology We believe that innovation and environmental objectives should work together to produce a truly sustainable society. Going beyond our manufacturing processes and recycling of our products, our innovation aims to help our customers become more sustainable too. Our continued research into eco-technologies has brought technological firsts including plant-based plastics, Quick Start-Up technology, Geljet technology and PxP toner. Geljet technology In 2007 we launched the first energy-saving printers that use our Geljet technology, including the Aficio GX 2500. These highly efficient printers have a maximum energy consumption of less than 35 watts per hour, equivalent to that of a fluorescent light. While these printers conserve energy, they also cut customer energy costs. Geljet ink is pigment-based with a high viscosity and high penetration, enabling high-speed duplex printing on plain paper with a picture quality equal to that of laser printers. Latex ink large format printing technology The new Ricoh Pro L4000 series features the next generation of Ricoh s piezo-electric print heads with durable latex ink. It offers extensive media support on a range of substrates and is ideal for the environmentally conscious buyer of printed signage, point of purchase and indoor and outdoor display. The aqueous nature of the latex ink means that is has a low environmental impact. Polymerised PxP toner At the end of 2007, we launched a new colour PxP toner that was later incorporated into all our cut-sheet colour production printing systems. This polymerised toner is made from newly developed polyester resin, designed to fuse at a lower temperature (20 C) than its predecessor while also achieving a higher picture quality with fine and uniform particles. The lower fusing temperature needs less energy, and production of this new toner also allows higher recyclability of wastewater and solvents. Our policy is to create products with minimal environmental impact throughout their lifecycles and the PxP toner is no exception. Produced by chemical polymerisation rather than by crushing carbon, the manufacturing process uses 30% less energy.
Quick Start-Up technology QSU (Quick Start-Up) is our energy saving technology, developed to achieve effective power conservation for our copiers and printers. The fusing roller that fixes the toner on the paper was thinned as much as possible to shorten the temperature rise time. Our high speed copiers also incorporate capacitors (electric storage devices) into QSU technology to store electricity during standby so that it can be used for restarting and printing. Eco Mode The largest impact a product has on the environment is during its working life. Eco Mode comprises three highly efficient energy-saving settings, which do not interfere with the performance of the multifunctional product while printing or copying. Eco Mode activates only when the device is standing idle. Depending on which model you choose, you could reduce energy use from between 24% up to 86%. Such significant savings of energy can shrink your energy costs and CO 2. Saving paper We continuously develop unique technologies to help our customers reduce paper consumption, directly benefiting not only ecological impact but also material costs. These include: Non-Stacking Duplex Unit this enables double sided copying or printing without loss of productivity; your copier uses less power by operating no longer than necessary. Scan and fax to e-mail have been introduced so that hard copies become unnecessary; all data can be moved around electronically. Plant-based plastics Much of our environmental impact came from the procurement and manufacture of raw parts. To improve this, in 2002 we started developing plant-based plastics for use in our copiers. These plastics are recyclable and contribute less to global warming than petroleumbased counterparts. Three years later we rolled out the industry s first plant-based multifunctional digital copier, of which 50% of the main unit was made from plant-based materials. We intend to raise this ratio and we are endeavouring to use these plastics in other areas, such as a plantbased toner. Ricoh Pro L4000
