/understands that everyone must take responsibility for their impact on the environment/this is Why we run our product development, manufacturing and business operations in an environmentally conscious way. Environmental Business Solutions
Responsibility by Design Sustainable Resources / This is Why sharing the environment is about sharing responsibility Today, every industry and every business routinely depends on technology that was almost unimaginable just a decade ago. That s real progress. But with progress comes responsibility. Manufacturers bear a responsibility for taking steps to limit their environmental impact. And everyone individuals and businesses alike must take responsibility for trading only with environmentally responsible suppliers. After all, you are only as green as your supply chain. How green are your suppliers? At Sharp, not only do we run our product development, manufacturing and business operations in an environmentally-conscious way, but we ask our suppliers to take positive action to limit their impact by adopting green practices and sourcing, wherever possible, parts and materials which are harmless to the environment. Suppliers are requested to establish and implement an Environmental Management System that includes organisational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources to promote environmental activities. Sharp Supplier Guidelines 2
Super Green Strategy Greener Products Greener Power Greener Processes / This is Why positive action demands real investment Sharp takes its environmental responsibilities extremely seriously. From the board of directors to the factory floor, every employee is committed to conserving resources and protecting the environment. And when it comes to manufacturing, we like to think we re in a class of our own. From as far back as the 1990s, Sharp has been making substantial investments in minimising our environmental impact. From the design of the product right through to endof-life product disposal, every aspect of our manufacturing processes has been scrutinized and improved. Looking ahead to 2012, Sharp s new vision is to Contribute to the world through environment and health-conscious business, focusing on energy-saving and energy-creating products. This Super Green Strategy is unique to Sharp and it rests on five pillars: Super Green Management: Implementation of environmental management and green awareness throughout the entire company. Super Green Products: Design and production of highquality products which are environmentally advanced. Super Green Technology: Development of unique, innovative technologies that drive forward environmental protection. Super Green Factories: Production in ecologically oriented factories. Super Green Recycling: Conservation of resources by recycling materials that we use on our products. Note: Super Green certifications are created and defined by Sharp, not awarded by a third party. Super Green Strategy Super Green Management Super Green Products Super Green Technology Super Green Factories Super Green Recyling Sharp s vision is to become a company that supplies energy creating and energy-saving products which, when used by our customers, offset Sharp s global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 100%. 3
Responsibility by Design Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions Environmentally Advanced Company / This is Why we promote and implement our Super Green Strategy One practical initiative to come from the Super Green Strategy is Sharp Green Front Sakai. At the forefront of ecology and efficiency, Sharp Green Front Sakai is our state-of-the-art manufacturing complex and is the first facility in the world* 1 to adopt 10th generation glass substrates to produce a new generation of LCD panels that save energy and thin-film solar cell panels that create energy. Environmental features of this plant include: An inter-building transport system increases production efficiency and reduces CO 2 emissions that can be caused by transporting goods from one location to another. Solar panels that are capable of producing 18 MW will be installed on factory roofs. Long life, energy efficient, LED lights throughout the complex help reduce electricity bills and maintenance costs. Sidewalk blocks made from used LCD panels absorb rain and keep surface temperature cool. While Sharp Green Front Sakai is a prime example of Sharp s efforts to make environmentally advanced products at an environmentally conscious plant, it is just one element of our global Super Green Strategy. Our manufacturing facility in France is another good example. This facility, which uses green power, was established to produce colour and black & white digital Multifunctional Products (MFPs), and in 2006 it was the first Super Green Factory outside of Japan a blueprint for further development and creating a greener society. All copiers and MFPs are manufactured at certified Super Green Factories. The even more demanding scheme, SGF II, was launched in 2008 and all plants are striving to achieve the hightened requirements and raise their environmental performance by reducing the amount of greenhouse gas and waste emissions they produce. Note: Super Green certifications are created and defined by Sharp, not awarded by a third party. * 1 As of October In 2008, greenhouse gas emissions from Sharp Corporation business activities were 5.5% less than fiscal year This is equivalent to the CO 2 emitted by a city the size of Brighton, UK. 4
Energy Saving, Energy Creating Greener Products Greener Power Greener Processes / This is Why innovation is the key to a greener and more efficient future Every new product we design is either Energy Creating, Energy Saving or Health Conscious. Energy creating 50 years ago, Sharp began pioneering solar technology. Today, we re also developing advanced fuel cells that generate clean electricity from a reaction between water, air and methanol. One day, these environmentally-friendly power sources will be commonplace in music players, laptops, cell phones and a whole range of portable electronic devices. Energy saving Sharp manufacturers a wide range of energy saving products for business and domestic use. Our LED based lighting products consume extremely small amounts of energy and have a design life of 40,000 hours which is approximately 40 times longer than that of an incandescent lamp. In addition our LCD TVs are becoming lighter, thinner and more energy efficient than ever and our printers, copiers and MFPs have all been designed to use as little energy as possible. Health conscious We also produce a range of energy-efficient fridges, air conditioners and air purifiers which feature Plasmacluster Ion technology. Plasmacluster Ion technology recreates the natural process that purifies the air in the Earth s atmosphere to remove dust, pollen, unpleasant odours and various mould spores and bacteria. The LED backlight used on Sharp s range of LCD TVs use 40% less energy than conventional CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp). 5
Responsibility by Design Green Product Guidelines / This is Why our Green Product Guidelines are applied worldwide Sharp s Green Product Guidelines, which are applied worldwide throughout our entire corporation, govern the entire lifecycle of every single product that we produce from the design through to manufacturing, transport, use, reuse, recycling and disposal. Life Cycle Assessment Overview These Green Product Guidelines are applied to our award-winning range of multifunction printers and they ensure: Lower energy consumption from products that use less power. Less waste from products that use fewer resources and less packaging. Improved safety from the reduction or abolition of hazardous chemicals. Conservation of resources from the use of recycled plastics and the manufacture of products that can be easily disassembled for recycling or reuse. Long life usability from the design of products that are easy to repair. Environmental impact assessment (results used to improve future products) Leaving a PC monitor on all night wastes enough energy to microwave 6 dinners. Source: Carbon Trust 11/2009 6
Conserve Natural Resources Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Greener Products Greener Power Greener Processes / This is Why we continually improve and refine our range of products Printers, copiers, scanners, fax machines: even the smallest businesses operate at least one. Most have several and the largest, thousands. That s why it s so important to choose products that are energy efficient and kinder to the environment. Greener document systems: what to look for Is it multifunctional? Several single function devices need more resources to manufacture and, collectively, use more energy than MFPs. How much energy does it use? Take the time to investigate how much power is used in operation and also when the machine is idle. Can it help you use less paper? As a minimum, make sure it can print, copy and fax on both sides of the page but check for other paper-saving features, too. What consumables does it use and how long will they last? Remember to check that the packaging isn t excessive or wasteful. A copier left on standby overnight wastes enough energy to make 30 cups of tea. Source: Carbon Trust 11/2009 7
Responsibility by Design Energy Efficient Power Save Mode / This is Why we strive to meet and exceed energy guidelines Energy Sharp s latest MFPs come with a whole range of energysaving features to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions while saving you money. In between jobs they switch into a low power mode, reducing the temperature of the fuser. When idle, they switch into Auto Power Shut Off mode using only enough power to receive a fax. What s more, the MX range of MFPs are equipped with an Energy Save button which manually forces the machine into this deep sleep mode. In addition, Sharp s high speed MFPs deliver energy saving through External Heat Fusing Technology. This uses an external system to heat thin steel fusing rollers which consumes less energy than conventional heating methods. External belt heating section At Sharp, our environmentally conscious products are referred to as Green Products (GP) the development and design of which is governed by Green Product Guidelines. In 1998, Sharp began certifying GP with a particularly high level of environmental performance as Advanced Green Products (AGP). A new criteria was then introduced in 2004 which certified AGPs with the highest possible levels of environmental performance as Super Green Products (SGP). These AGP and SGP certifications have been applied worldwide at Sharp since Sharp are continually striving towards SGP and are always progressing on predecessor and competitor products. This is evident in recent MFPs* where there is a power consumption saving of up to 30% vs comparable products on the market at the time of launch. The graph below shows how the Typical Energy Consumption (TEC) of recent Sharp MFPs is more than half the TEC limits specified by Energy Star. *MX-M260. 9 Remote Access Front Panel Paper Saving Features Greener Products Greener Power Greener Processes / This is Why we offer innovative solutions at every level of ownership Consumables Sharp s latest advances in toner technology bring additional benefits. Our toner cartridges are designed to work in a number of different models, which means you can keep less in stock. We ve made them smaller and lighter and used less packaging, too, to reduce waste and make them easier to transport. Users can benefit from significant savings by printing internal documents in draft mode to reduce the amount of toner used. There s also a Toner Save mode which increases the yield and reduces running costs. A smarter way of working Sharp s innovative Remote Access Front Panel feature enables support staff to view and operate the MFP s control panel from a remote PC. This means that a technician can easily diagnose and even resolve technical issues without having to travel to the site, reducing transport related CO 2 emissions. Paper Sharp MFP s help everyone to save paper. Our N-Up printing feature, for example, lets you print or copy up to 4 pages on to a single side of paper, and an automatic double-sided printing function helps to cut paper consumption in half. Other paper-saving features include the ability to produce a test set of documents before starting a long print or copy run, automatic media selection and the use of PINs at the MFP to initiate print runs, ensuring that printed pages don t go astray and have to be reprinted. With the current culture of recycling its reassuring to know that Sharp MFPs are also capable of processing recycled paper that complies with EN Double-sided faxing, the ability to route incoming faxes to an address instead of automatically printing them and the option to send faxes directly from a PC all bring further savings as well as productivity gains. 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials. Source: 9
Responsibility by Design Responsible Recycling Policies / This is Why local responsibility makes a global difference Sharp gives its national offices the freedom to determine their own recycling polices in order to make the most efficient use of the local facilities. SUK announces registration to the Carbon Trust Standard Since January 2010 Sharp Electronics (UK) has been officially certified with the Carbon Trust Standard to prove we have taken real action on climate change by reducing our carbon footprint. The Carbon Trust Standard is a mark of excellence that is awarded to organisations in recognition of their measuring, managing and reducing their carbon emissions. It is a third party verification that we have taken real action on climate change and have reduced our carbon emissions. Some of the projects that have enabled us to get the Carbon Trust Standard include energy saving, change of vehicle policy and recycling. As part of our recycling efforts Sharp Electronics (UK) Ltd have entered into a referral partnership scheme with ereco EMEA Corporation Ltd to provide an environmentally-friendly consumable recycling solution to our customers. ereco provide unique recycling solutions for waste consumables and Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) at the end of its life. Our toner customers now have an environmentally responsible solution to dispose of their waste by proper treatment and recycling that ensures 0% waste to landfill. Sharp UK are committed to continuing the great work and to keep reducing our impact on the environment. In 2008, the paper recycling rate in Europe reached a record high of 66.6%.
