R&S BC NETSTATE Open network management software for broadcast applications Broadcasting Product Brochure 01.00

R&S BC-NETSTATE At a glance R&S BC NETSTATE is a specialized software solution for broadcast applications and can be used to monitor and control networks. As an open solution, R&S BC NETSTATE is highly flexible and easy to use. Broadcast network operators need a tool for monitoring the installed infrastructure. R&S BC NETSTATE is the perfect solution for this application. R&S BC NETSTATE is a flexible system software that can be used to query, process and display all device parameters. The user can independently modify the monitoring configuration and adapt it to changing requirements. R&S BC NETSTATE is open and can be extended as required. Key facts Built-in graphical configuration tool Site monitoring and central network monitoring Performance monitoring, QoS evaluation Fault and incident management Northbound interface via SNMP or database access Correlation and automation Support for all common remote control interfaces Status overview for a transmitter site. 2

R&S BC-NETSTATE Benefits and key features Open and manufacturer-independent Broadcast networks consist of network elements from different manufacturers. For this reason, it is important for the network management system to be open and capable of monitoring each device in the network. R&S BC NETSTATE fully meets this requirement and allows the subsequent integration of equipment. Software solution without special hardware requirements R&S BC-NETSTATE is a software solution that runs on almost any hardware. R&S BC-NETSTATE users have the freedom to choose the hardware they wish to deploy (e.g. laptop, server). Fully configurable thanks to built-in development tool (R&S TS4570-K1) A broadcast operator's network is constantly changing: Digitization results in new requirements, and system equipment such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), transmitters and monitoring equipment must be enhanced or exchanged. Consequently, it is also necessary to adapt the network monitoring system, a job often assigned to external contractors. Due to its flexibility, R&S BC-NETSTATE can be easily adapted to changes in the broadcast network. The required development tool (R&S TS457-K1) is supplied with the software. Scaling and expandability Networks can grow with R&S BC-NETSTATE. In order to provide the optimum NMS solution, the product can be scaled according to the size of the network to be monitored. R&S BC-NETSTATE is a cost-effective and attractive solution even for small networks. Straightforward user interface Operation of the R&S BC-NETSTATE graphical development environment is highly intuitive. The user can define and modify configurations as required. Even logic circuits can be developed without any programming skills. Other products require users to have programming skills or experience with scripting languages. Here, R&S BC NETSTATE offers a real advantage. Developed for broadcast applications R&S BC-NETSTATE is specialized software for broadcast applications. In terrestrial broadcasting, flexible tools are necessary to adapt the monitoring system as required. In particular, the ability to classify site types allows users to create custom monitoring solutions with R&S BC-NETSTATE. Configurable user interface as web application R&S BC-NETSTATE is operated via a web interface. Unlike the user interface of other systems, the R&S BC NETSTATE user interface can be configured by the user and adapted to meet various operational requirements. No special client software is required and all common web browsers are supported. Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 3

Graphical configuration tool (R&S TS4570-K1) Core component of R&S BC-NETSTATE The graphical configuration tool is a Windows application that can be used to develop and set up the entire monitoring system. This tool comes with the software as standard. The user can employ this interface to create or configure, for example, the following parts of the system: Network topology (e.g. entry of site name and geographical coordinates) Integration of equipment (e.g. transmitters) Definition of graphical objects that are to appear in the user interface Definition of NMS-specific events for the NMS event log Definition, classification and GUI design for various site types Development of entire NMS logic Integration of equipment. Definition, classification and GUI design for various site types. Development of entire NMS logic. 4

Logic generation, automation and correlation (R&S TS4570-K1) Electronic drawing board. Electronic drawing board for logic generation The graphical logic generator is the main component of R&S BC-NETSTATE. As part of the configuration tool, it allows the user to define the overall system behavior and contains comprehensive libraries for creating logical relationships. Logic is generated simply by assembling and linking objects on the electronic drawing board. Unlike solutions from other suppliers, R&S BC-NETSTATE makes it very easy to define logical relationships in a highly intuitive manner. The logic generator can handle the following tasks: Automation (e.g. for backup switchovers) Correlation for programming root cause analysis (RCA) rules Definition of monitoring behavior Status changes in user interface Creation of manual device controls Comprehensive libraries for defining logical relationships. Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 5

Site management and configuration of SLA parameters (R&S TS4570-K1) Management of different site types. Management of different site types In broadcast networks, the sites are typically classified, e.g. as high-power transmitter sites and relay sites. R&S BC-NETSTATE can manage all site types in just one configuration file. For each site type, a separate user interface can be created. Depending on the site, equipment can be activated or deactivated. Even the NMS logic can be modified using configuration switches. Configuration of SLA parameters To check compliance of the quality of service with the service level agreement (SLA), a network operator can use R&S BC NETSTATE to configure parameters that correspond to the contractual requirements (SLA parameters). In many terrestrial digital TV networks, the modulation error ratio (MER) and the transmitter output power are important service attributes for achieving the prescribed network coverage. Any reduction of these values during broadcasting would directly impact TV viewers. R&S BC NETSTATE supports the definition of these parameters. Sampling periods, reporting periods and allowable downtime are easy to set. If the entered boundaries are violated, a counter begins running to record the downtime. Parameter definition for verification of quality of service. 6

Verification of network quality (R&S TS4570-K3) Monitoring of SLA parameters Since broadcast network operators charge for the services they provide, they need to prove to their customers that the agreed quality of service is actually delivered. The SLA parameters configured with the R&S TS4570-K1 option can be continuously monitored, saved and calculated in line with contractual specifications using the R&S TS4570-K3 option. Alarms and fault messages are added up, statistically evaluated and recorded. It is also possible to precisely analyze changes versus time in a graphical format. This allows network operators to reproduce the timing relationships of failures and correlate them with other data. High performance R&S BC-NETSTATE can currently manage up to 100 000 data sets per measurement channel. If one data set is recorded per minute, data can be gathered for more than two months. In addition, R&S BC-NETSTATE can compute cumulative values for the individual monitoring periods. For example, if the reporting period is one month, a cumulative value is generated for each month. Up to 1000 of these cumulative values can be saved. In this example, the theoretical recording time would be more than 83 years. To ensure that all critical values are saved, each data set contains the minimum, maximum and average value. Quality of service report. Change in parameters as a function of time. Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 7

Site overview and event log (R&S TS4570-K2) Event log options. Monitoring of transmitter site status at a glance R&S BC-NETSTATE displays the current status of a site using diagrams. This gives the user an immediate overview of signal events at the site along with any possible faults. Multiple diagrams can also be created for a site. This makes it possible to graphically describe different systems in detail. The following objects can be created and configured: Device icons with additional properties Color coding depending on fault Dynamic signal ports with color coding depending on fault Dynamic text fields for listing additional details depending on fault Device commands for control purposes Web navigators for access to device web servers Display of measured values for connected devices Dynamic insertion of labels to represent higher-level fault messages Dynamic signal paths for identifying active signal paths Inclusion of bit maps for visual highlighting of devices or systems Straightforward event log Changes at the site are recorded in a log book with a timestamp ( event log ). Event log entries can be sorted and filtered, e.g. by fault source, time range and category. The number of entries is variable, and periodic archiving is possible. The occurrences mode is also useful, since it counts the entries that occurred in a defined time window. The log book can be cleared or exported. Straightforward event log. 8

R&S BC-NETSTATE as element manager or site computer Element managers (EM) are commonly used for decentralized monitoring and control of devices. The EM must be programmed such that backup switchovers can be executed in case of faults. R&S BC NETSTATE meets these requirements because it allows users to set up element management systems that gather status information from the individual devices/elements and consolidate it into summary alarms. Site monitoring Site-specific devices Broadcast transmitter multiplex 1 to UPS Parallel I/O SNMP SNMP SNMP Transport stream and COFDM analyzer, e.g. R&S DVM SNMP BC-NETSTATE: site control with fault messages SNMP Other devices Display of signal events for a transmitter site. Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 9

Central network monitoring (R&S TS4570-K4) Display of a broadcast network on a geographical map R&S BC-NETSTATE can be used to monitor the entire broadcast network from a network operation center (NOC). The broadcast network is displayed on a geographical map. Fault messages for individual sites can be identified at a glance thanks to color coding. This makes it possible to quickly forward alarms to the technical staff responsible for handling them. If more information is required, additional messages and measured values for the sites can be displayed. Color coding and messages are user-definable (with the R&S TS4570-K1 option). Users can zoom into the geographical map or scroll it. It is possible to switch interactively from the map view to the site overview to obtain more detailed information. Direct query of individual devices R&S BC-NETSTATE can be used to directly query individual devices in transmitter sites such as the transmitter equipment; no intermediate hardware is required. For large sites or large transmitter networks, it is advisable to use site computers to collect the data in order to reduce the load on the network. This makes it possible to generate summary alarms. Display of a broadcast network on a geographical map. 10

Alarm forwarding via SMS or e-mail (R&S TS4570-K5) Small network operators typically do not have an NOC that is staffed around the clock. To inform maintenance personnel about fault messages, R&S BC-NETSTATE can generate SMS or e-mail messages. The SMS messages can be sent via the Internet or a connected GSM modem. A mail server must be configured to send e-mail messages. User groups can be created and configured. Users can define which alarms are to be sent via SMS or e-mail. The alarm recipients can be edited by the user. Configuration of a GSM modem. Configuration of a mail server. Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 11

Management of fault messages and creation of incident tickets (R&S TS4570-K6) For large network operators, management of fault messages plays a critical role. Incoming alarms must be recognized and the appropriate countermeasures introduced. R&S BC-NETSTATE uses acoustic signals to indicate new alarms. If an alarm is assessed as signifying an actual fault in the network, incident tickets can be created. Instructions can be entered into the tickets to specify how to handle the faults. The ticket is sent to the appropriate person via e-mail or SMS. Once the repair is finished, this person closes the case. This approach allows sequential handling of faults in the network. Overview of created tickets. Management of incidents. 12

Support for other interfaces (R&S TS4570 K7) R&S BC NETSTATE controls and monitors devices via the simple network management protocol (SNMP). Non SNMP devices are queried by a protocol converter, which is a separate application that helps ensure maximum flexibility. The protocol converter communicates with the non SNMP devices and transmits the relevant information to R&S BC NETSTATE via SNMP. The following protocols are currently supported: SCPI RS 232/RS 485 BITBUS Modbus Suitable device drivers must be developed in order to make use of this option. Users with appropriate knowledge can develop the drivers on their own. As an alternative, Rohde & Schwarz offers a driver development service. Functioning of protocol converter TS4570-K7 software option: protocol converter Device A RS-232/485 Device B Device C SCPI Modbus Devicespecific drivers SNMP agent NMS, e.g. R&S BC-NETSTATE Device n BITBUS Functioning of protocol converter (example: R&S ETC compact TV analyzer) ETC compact TV analyzer R&S BC-NETSTATE network manager SCPI TS4570-K7 protocol converter SNMP TS4570-K2 SNMP manager Rohde & Schwarz R&S BC NETSTATE 13

Operation and activation Operation of R&S BC-NETSTATE R&S BC-NETSTATE is operated via a web interface. Almost any web browser can be used for this purpose. A plug-in makes it possible to quickly display alarms and status changes. In case of changes, the screen is updated only at the appropriate spot without having to reload the entire webpage. This saves time and reduces the network load. The user interface is attractive and intuitive. System integration (northbound interface) If R&S BC-NETSTATE is integrated into existing systems, it can also report to other management systems that have already been deployed. Configured alarms are sent via SNMP. R&S BC-NETSTATE as higher-level user interface R&S BC-NETSTATE can be used as a higher-level user interface. As a result, the user can simply ignore the different operating concepts implemented in different devices. R&S BC-NETSTATE can be conveniently and flexibly configured. Setting site-specific parameters To activate R&S BC-NETSTATE in the network, it is necessary to make site-specific settings. The built-in deployment manager is used to set the following parameters, for example: IP addresses of devices to be monitored Selection of site type Web link addresses for devices Archive folder for event log Memory depth for SLA parameters Trap sinks for built-in SNMP agent Network configuration. SNMP agent configuration. 14
