Say hello 3 What are smart meters? Smart meters are brand new meters that automatically credit your payments and send us your meter readings without you having to lift a finger. What s so great about them? Smart meters are designed to help you become more energy efficient by showing you how much energy you re using as you re using it. When we upgrade your meters, we install a nifty little display you can see what it looks like over the page. What can your smart meter tell you? You can compare your energy usage day-by-day and see how much energy you re using to help you work out where you could possibly save money. You can even set spending alerts in good old pounds and pence each month. Please take a few minutes to read this guide, we promise it won t take long. What do smart meters mean for bills? Because your smart meter sends us your meter readings automatically, it means we can use accurate readings when we calculate your bill. How do smart meters help Utility Warehouse help you? Smart meters aren t just about more accurate meter readings, they also help better equip our customer service teams to help answer your questions, and also enable us to develop new products and services that are tailored to your needs. When we install smart meters we work to the Ofgem approved Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice. You can read this at utilitywarehouse.co.uk/legal/codesofpractice

You should keep your display plugged in at all times don t worry, it ll cost you less than 20p a year. Your smart meter display can also be powered by two AAA batteries (not supplied).

Using the smart meter display 6 Topping up You need to keep your system topped up to ensure you always have an energy supply. Topping up is easy 1. If you haven t already received them, your new top up cards should arrive in the next few days. 2. Then top up as soon as possible. You can add anything from 5 to 49 on each meter at any PayPoint outlet. Find your nearest PayPoint outlet at paypoint.com 3. You ll be given a receipt with a 20, 40 or 60 digit code. Keep hold of this receipt until your new credit is showing on your display it should be added to your meter within 45 minutes. 4. If you need your credit sooner or there s no mobile phone signal at your home, you can type the code on your receipt into your smart energy display or directly into your meter. Press A on the keypad and the display will show vend mode. Type in the 20, 40 or 60 digit code and press B to confirm. If you enter a wrong number, press A to delete it. Viewing your meter balance Your smart meter display holds your last five top ups for each meter. To see them, choose either Electricity or Gas from the Main Menu and they ll be displayed with your current meter balance and how many days your energy will last. This is only an estimated amount of time and it ll change depending on how much you energy you use. Make a note of your top up card numbers here Electricity Gas

Using the smart meter display 7 Need emergency credit? You can get up to 10 emergency credit to give you time to top up. How to activate your emergency credit If you run low on credit, your meter will make a sound and the LED will flash red. To use the 10 emergency credit and stop the alarm, press the E-Credit button. What happens if your emergency credit runs out? If your emergency credit runs out during the week after 4pm, the supply won t go off until 10am the next day. If it runs out after these times on a Friday, your supply will stay on until the Monday after. This will give you enough time to buy more gas or electricity this extra emergency supply is called Friendly Credit. The next time you top up, you ll need to repay the emergency credit and any friendly credit you ve used. If you go away, make sure you leave enough credit on your meter to cover the energy your fridge, freezer and other appliances will use, as well any standing charges. TIP If you don t top up or press OK, your supply will eventually go off.

Using the smart meter display 8 If your electricity or gas goes off If you run out of credit and lose supply, you ll need to top up so that you re at least 1 in credit, then follow the instructions to switch your supply back on. Electricity Your display will show the following screen to let you know it s safe to reconnect your supply. Gas Your display will show the following screen to let you know it s safe to reconnect your supply. After pressing confirm, the display will show: After pressing confirm, the display will show: Press restore to restore your electricity supply. Press restore to restore your gas supply. You must turn your gas supply back on at the gas meter keypad this is a safety feature built into the gas meter. Before you switch on the supply, you must make sure that all your gas appliances are turned off, including any pilot lights.

Repaying a debt Using the smart meter display 9 If your meter has been set to repay an outstanding bill, you ll need to top up your meter with the agreed weekly amount to clear your debt plus however much you think you ll need for the amount of electricity or gas you usually use. How does your meter recover what you owe? Your meter will collect 1/7th of your agreed weekly repayment amount overnight. For example, if your agreed weekly repayment amount is 10, your meter will collect 1.43 each night. What if you top up less than the agreed repayment amount? You should always try and keep enough credit on your meter to cover the agreed weekly amount even if you re not using any electricity or gas. If you don t, your meter will keep track of any missed repayments and these will be taken before any new credits are applied. What if you re struggling to pay? It s important to get in touch as soon as possible if you re struggling to repay the agreed amount and your ongoing usage charges. Our trained UK-based customer service teams will be able to talk through all the available options and will work with you to find an affordable repayment plan you can stick to. See what you ve used To view your consumption history, press the History button on your smart meter display. You ll be shown a range of graphs showing how much electricity you ve used over the last hour, day, week or month. This could mean your agreed weekly amount has to be increased and it could take you longer to pay back your outstanding balance.

Using the smart meter display 10 Making the most of your smart meter display Set a usage alert There are three ways to set targets: Your smart meter lets you set a limit for how much money you want to spend in a day. 1. Press the top right hand button on the screen until the shows. 2. Then press the amount button in the middle and enter the limit you want to spend in a day in pounds and pence, then press OK. 3. If you get close to going over this amount, the LED at the top will change colour. You can also set a kwh usage limit and a CO2 kg limit to keep an eye on how much energy you re using. Credit alerts When your electricity meter drops to 2 credit, your display will sound an alarm. You can set other Low Credit Alerts too by clicking on the amount box and entering when you d like to be alerted. The LED will flash green if you haven t used much of your limit, orange if you re halfway through and red if you re almost at your limit. TIP Don t set your Low Credit Alert lower than 1 as this may not give you enough time to top up.

Using the smart meter display 11 How to save energy A few tips on how you can save money by becoming more energy efficient. Heating Turn the thermostat down by 1 C. This can save you up to 10% on your energy bills. The recommended temperature setting is 18 C to 21 C. If you are going away for a few days leave the thermostat on a low setting to provide protection from freezing. Use the time-switch or programmer function on your central heating system to only provide you with heating and hot water when you need it. Set your central heating to turn on 30 minutes before you get up or arrive home. Turn radiators off in rooms that you don t use and avoid opening doors and windows to cool a room that is too hot - try turning the heating down instead. Don t put furniture in front of radiators; it absorbs the heat and stops it heating the room. Lighting You can now get LED spotlights that are bright enough to replace halogens, as well as regular energy saving bulbs. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and fittings. Appliances Don t leave appliances in standby mode when you are not using them. Appliances such as your TV, stereo and computer continue to use electricity when they are in standby mode. Try and wait until you have a full load before using your washing machine or dishwasher. If this isn t possible, use the half load, or economy programme if your machines have one. Try using your washing machine at lower temperatures. Washing at 30 c will save you energy. Tumble dryers use large amounts of electricity. Do not put really wet clothes into a tumble dryer; wring them out or spin dry them first. Where possible, hang clothes out to dry. You ll find lots more information on how to save money on your energy bills at utilitywarehouse.co.uk/legal/energyefficiency If you replace all of the remaining old-fashioned bulbs with CFLs, and all of your halogens with LEDs, it could save you about 70 a year on bills.
