What is JPI HDHL Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing and Processing BIOECONOMY in Horizon2020 In October 2010, the European Council launched the Joint Programming Initiative on JPI Healthy diet for healthy life (JPI HDHL). A FP7 CSA supported the JPI HDHL (2011-2013). A request for one year extension of the ongoing CSA is in progress. A novel CSA for the JPI HDHL (2015?) is under discussion with the EC. Priorities Foster collaboration of food and health scientific communities and work toward alignment of regional, national research programmes and policies. The challenges of JPI HDHL cannot be addressed at the national level. It is necessary to establish a stronger European coordination around shared Vision, SRA, objectives and instruments. Foster collaborations of the JPI HDHL with other European and international initiatives and Horizon 2020 Develop innovation at the service of society Improve health and wellbeing, decrease diet-related disease burden and health system costs

BIOECONOMY in Horizon2020 European governments are struggling with an allarming increase in obesity and diet-related diseases, including malnutrition and micronutrients deficiency in subgroups of the population Presently, an estimated 22% of children aged 5-9 years are overweight (of which 6% are obese) and 16% of children aged 13-17 years are overweight (of which 4% obese) in Europe. Obesity accounts for over 1 million deaths (10-13% of deaths) and 12 million ill health life-years each year in the WHO European Region, overweight is accountable for a substantial proportion of the total burden disease in Europe The direct health care costs of obesity in the WHO European Region amounts in general to 2-4% but can be up to 8% of national health expenditures. The International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) has estimated that the cost of obesity in the EU to be 150 billion per year.
