These courses are offered, assessed, and certified by Oxbridge Academy and are not credit-bearing or registered on the NQF. INTERNATIONAL COURSES AND QUALIFICATIONS ICB Qualifications: These courses are offered by Oxbridge Academy, and assessed and examined by the ICB (Institute for Certified Bookkeepers). Courses are credit-bearing and registered on the NQF. ABMA Courses: These courses are offered by Oxbridge Academy (an ABMA-recognised training provider), and are assessed and examined by ABMA Education in the UK. ABMA Diplomas are internationally recognised, and may give students access to degree programmes at certain UK universities. ISO Courses: These courses are offered by Oxbridge Academy in conjunction with DQS, and are aligned with the relevant international standards. What is computer studies? Computer studies is a broad field that covers not only basic computer skills, but also specialised areas such as computer engineering and information systems. Basic computer skills: These include how to operate a computer, how to use word processing and spreadsheet programs, how to print documents, how to send e-mail, and how to browse the internet using a computer. These are the skills that you need to work in almost any job in an office environment. Computer engineering: This field of study is closely related to computer science, engineering, and IT. It involves the design and development of computer hardware and software, as well as computer networking and security. Computing and information systems: This field of study is concerned with the communication, processing, and storage of digital information within organisational structures. It includes everything from system design and programming to database systems and software development.

What will you learn? This depends on which course you choose to study. When you study towards an Oxbridge Academy Certificate in Computer Studies you will learn about: The purpose of information technology (IT) Different types of computers Computers in everyday life Legal issues surrounding the use of computers, the internet, and e-mail Working with files and folders Programs and printing Word processors and spreadsheets Communication via the internet and e-mail When you study towards a National Certificate in Management Assistant (Computer Practice) you will learn about: Basic principles of communication (including electronic communication) Business letters and correspondence Gathering, processing, and providing information Word processing The challenges of entrepreneurship When you study towards an ABMA Diploma in Computer Engineering you will learn about: The functions of computer systems The design of computer systems Building and configuring computer systems

Routine maintenance of computer systems Computer security and the vulnerabilities introduced by programming practices Security risks Basic principles of project management Planning a project Managing project processes The layers of networking technology The identification and comparison of common operating systems The setup and troubleshooting of a Windows operating system Working in a professional support environment When you study towards an ABMA Diploma in Computing and Information Systems you will learn about: The capabilities of different types of information systems The roles of information systems in organisations The development of information systems Information systems and security The differences and similarities between common programming languages Writing object-oriented and event-driven code The process of systems analysis Planning and managing information systems projects Statistical methods and data collection instruments Web design and the construction of websites

The information provided serves as an indication of what you will learn please note that this will vary from one course to another (within the relevant category). How will you be assessed? Oxbridge Certificates: You will be assessed through written assignments, which you can submit via post or e-mail, or via the Online Student Portal. You will not be required to write any exams. National Certificates: You will be assessed through a combination of written assignments and exams. You will be able to write your exams at your nearest designated exam centre. (The exam centres are situated all over South Africa). ABMA Diplomas: You will be expected to complete written assignments and exams. You will be able to write your exams in either Stellenbosch (Western Cape) or Pretoria (Gauteng). Your exams will be marked by ABMA in the UK.

What will you be able to do once you ve successfully completed your course? This depends on which course you choose to study. Once you have completed your Computer Studies or Management Assistant Certificate, for example, you will have the basic skills that you need to operate a computer efficiently in the office environment. Depending on your other skills, qualifications, and experience, this may help you to secure an office-based job in various fields of work. If you decide to complete one of the ABMA Diploma courses, you may be able to look for work in a variety of positions within the IT industry. You may also decide to further your studies in Computer Engineering or Computing and Information Systems by studying towards a relevant degree at a UK university.
