Myths and s About Stopping Smoking Myth We only help people to stop smoking cigarettes. The Quit Squad supports people with all smoke-related habits, including smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, shisha and e-cigarettes. Myth I can rely on willpower when trying to stop smoking. Research shows that you are four times more likely to quit smoking with treatment and support from your local Quit Squad than willpower alone. Myth I have been smoking for so long it s not worth giving up. Every time you breathe in cigarette smoke you absorb carbon monoxide (CO) which is a poisonous gas that thickens the blood and can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Within 24 hours of stopping, the CO level in your blood goes back to the level of a non-smoker and 3-9 months after you stop your lung function will improve by 5-10%, allowing you to breathe easier. The other good news is that the average smoker can save over 2,000 a year by quitting! Myth I have been to a stop smoking clinic before and wasn t able to stop, so I m not allowed to go back. You are welcome to attend and seek support from the Quit Squad as many times as you need. Myth I will find the cravings and withdrawal symptoms too hard to cope with. The withdrawal symptoms can include mood disturbance, increased appetite, headaches, sleep disturbances and difficulty concentrating but these can all be controlled with Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), Varenicline or Bupropion (tablets). These products include patches, oral products (mouth chews and sprays) and medication which you can get on prescription and your stop smoking advisor can recommend the right ones for you. Page 2
Free Advice and Support We provide a variety of appointments to suit your needs. These include individual and group sessions as well as drop in appointments and groups. Community drop in clinics These clinics are easy to access and don t require an appointment, you simply just turn up! They provide a relaxed and friendly environment where you can speak to a trained advisor who will offer advice and support to help you take those first steps in quitting. Follow ups will then be arranged either weekly or fortnightly between you and your advisor. Individual appointments You will need to contact the Quid Squad via our freephone number to book an appointment. You will be seen, wherever possible, by the same specialist advisor to help you quit. Group sessions These are available at a number of locations and consist of a 6 week course and then support continues at drop in clinics for a further 6 weeks. The groups are held in a relaxed informal setting and with the support of others who are trying to stop smoking which improves your chances of quitting for good. How long is the course and how long do the sessions last? The course lasts for 12 weeks with the initial appointment lasting for approximately 30 minutes. Each follow up appointment will be tailored to your needs and each session should last around 15 minutes. You are welcome to bring along a friend, partner or relative if you wish. Treatment To help you quit you will receive a prescription or voucher for Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), Varenicline or Buproprion, and we work in partnership with your GP. Your GP may need to assess your suitability for these products. If you pay for prescriptions you may find it cheaper to buy a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC), and you can find our more information and how to apply for this at: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk Collection of data We are required to collect outcomes from people who have stopped smoking using the service. We therefore may need to contact you by telephone, text or letter to confirm how you have got on and where possible ask you to attend a venue to obtain a carbon monoxide reading to support your smoke-free status. Harmful Oral, Smokeless and Tobacco Products Below are some examples of oral, smokeless and tobacco products that may cause serious risks to your health. Shisha pipe E-cig Cigarette Paan Paan masalas The paan leaf itself is not harmful but nearly all the other ingredients impact on oral health. Lime Lime is corrosive, damaging the lining of the mouth. Shisha tobacco Paan leaf Tobacco products Betel nut (supari) Paan masala consists of spices and artificial colourings. Can cause teeth problems and increase risk of mouth cancer. Specific services for the South Asian community We offer specialist 1-1 support for people from the South Asian community who may experience language or cultural barriers in their effort to stop smoking. Our trained advisers can offer multilingual services in Punjabi, Gujarati and Urdu, and acknowledge the differences in culture which can vary within families as well as communities. Everyone can access the 1-1 or community drop in clinics in their local area without fear of stigma.
Support in Pregnancy Stopping smoking while you are pregnant is the most important step you can make so you don t harm the growth and health of your baby. When you smoke, the carbon monoxide in cigarettes restricts the oxygen supply, so that your baby gets less of the oxygen it needs to grow and develop. In addition, smoking during pregnancy can also increase the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. Our specialist stop smoking advisors provide friendly and individual support and will work closely with you and your midwife to help you quit. It is much safer to use Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) whilst pregnant than continuing to smoke as the nicotine used in NRT is less harmful than the chemicals in cigarettes. Patches, gum, inhalators, nasal spray and lozenges are several options that are suitable for mums-to-be, but if you are concerned about what medicines to use during pregnancy speak to your midwife or GP. Support in Hospital If you are going into hospital Contact your local Quit Squad who will be able to offer treatment and support prior to admission. If you are already in hospital You can ask your ward nurse for treatment and support to help ease withdrawal symptoms during your stay. If you have stopped smoking in hospital You can ask your ward nurse for support during your stay in hospital and on discharge if you want to remain smoke free just ask to be referred to the Quit Squad and you will be discharged with a nicotine replacement product. Your local Quit Page 5 Squad will then get in touch to offer further support to help you remain smoke free. We can also support any of your family and friends if they wish to stop smoking too. Hospital clinics Clinics are available each week at: Burnley General Hospital Royal Blackburn Hospital Longridge Community Hospital Royal Preston Hospital Chorley and South Ribble District Hospital Royal Lancaster Infirmary Ormskirk Hospital These clinics are open to both staff and the general public but please feel free to contact the Quit Squad for more information.
