3 HEALTH CONSEQUENCES Nearly 1/5 of U.S. deaths result from tobacco use Smokers have two to four times the risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death Smokers are times more likely to die of lung cancer Smoking causes 30% of all cancer deaths Smoking is a major causal factor in emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and stroke Estimates show an average of 13.2 years of life lost for women and 14.5 for men, due to tobacco use Cigarette smoking is the largest preventable cause of death in the United States Source: American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 3
