THE MASTERCARD FOUNDATION SCHOLARS PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF UNDERGRADUATE APPLICATIONS TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2014 The MasterCard Foundation (the Foundation ) has partnered with the University of Cape Town (UCT) to oversee the implementation of financial, academic, social and post-graduation support to awarded candidates under the scholarship titled The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town The vision of the Program is to transition promising young people from beneficiaries to benefactors, preparing them with the necessary values, knowledge, skills, and leadership to fuel economic and social progress across Africa. The Program targets academically qualified undergraduate and postgraduate candidates whom are economically disadvantaged young people from Sub-Saharan Africa. The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town will provide 300 scholarships for economically disadvantaged students from Africa to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies at UCT. Students enrolled on the Program will receive comprehensive scholarships, mentoring, leadership development, and life skills support. Scholars will further be supported to address emotional and academic issues that arise for students as they obtain a university education. Academic support will include tutoring, language training, writing circles and guidance counselling. To be eligible for consideration for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town, the applicant must meet the following criteria: TARGET GROUP - Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country; Be undergraduate (including Honors from 2016) and graduate (Masters by research and coursework and research Masters only) applicants; Be applicants in the fields of Commerce, Engineering and Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law and Sciences. SELECTION CRITERIA - Academic eligibility for the intended course of study at UCT: All prospective Scholars

must first be admitted to the University of Cape Town to be eligible for the Scholarship. English Language Proficiency; Preference will be given to First Generation Students; Strong motivation given in the application essay to be part of Africa s future success; Students emerging from economically disadvantaged household background; Commitment to return to the home country and take a leadership role in promoting social and economic improvement. APPLICATION PROCEDURE In order to apply for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program, applicants must first apply to the University of Cape Town (UCT) for academic study and placement. Applicants are advised to carefully read through the guidelines below prior to submitting academic or scholarship applications (PART ONE). Once the applicant has been accepted by UCT, students may submit a scholarship application (PART TWO). Applications for undergraduate admission to UCT are open from 01 April 2014 until 30 September 2014. You may register for any courses for which you have the appropriate time available and the requisite background skills and knowledge. The University of Cape Town operates on a calendar year system from February to November. The year is divided into two semesters. The first semester runs from February to June and the second semester runs from July to November. Any courses marked with a suffix H or W run over both semesters and semesterised courses have a suffix F (first semester) or S (second semester) at the end of the course code. It is important to note that registration for a course commits a student to participating fully in all aspects of that course; this may entail group work, projects or field trips. It is important to establish the requirements of courses you are considering if you are not certain of your ability to commit. STEP 2: Obtain proof of English Language Proficiency. The medium of instruction at UCT is English. You must have attained one of the following levels of proficiency in English: South African Applicants: A pass equivalent for English (E symbol) at South African Senior Certificate level; OR A pass equivalent for English at South African National Senior Certificate Level, either at Home Language or First Additional Language level. International Applicants for whom English is not a home language: A recent scoring, within 5 years from the date of application in one of the following: A stipulated score on the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). The NBTs are offered by the Centre for Educational Testing for Admissions and Placement (CETAP) and can be arranged to be taken anywhere in the world. (Visit www.nbt.ac.za for details). A pass in the TOEFL test (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a score of at least 570 on paper-based TOEFL; OR 230 on the computer-based TOEFL test; OR

88 on the Internet-based TOEFL test; OR An overall band score of 7.0 (with no individual element of the test scoring below 6.0) on the International English Language Testing system (IELTS); OR A score on the Pearson PTE Academic test of at least 64. These are minimum English Language requirements. Individual faculties have higher English requirements. (Details are available in the various Faculty Handbooks of which the links listed on page 2 and 3 of this document). NB - Please note that you must ensure that the test score is received by the Interim Coordinator by no later than 30 September 2014 The Interim Coordinator will liaise with applicants for the submission for timeous scores to UCT Admissions by no later than 30 September 2014. STEP 3: Collate the necessary supporting documents to strengthen your application. Applicants are advised to work closely with the Interim Coordinator whilst preparing and submitting the academic application. Applicants are required to submit a mid-year transcript of results or final transcript, predicted scores along with the application, by 30 September 2014. UCT reserves the right to cancel the application if all the necessary certified hard copies are not submitted on time. Upon registration and arrival at UCT the successful applicant will be asked to provide original documentation of the certified copies submitted during the application phase. Applying for exemption: Matriculation means that you have met the legal minimum requirements for degree study in South Africa. Applicants are required to assess whether their prior qualifications meet the admissions requirements toward first university degree studies and to apply for the issuing of a certificate that gives Matriculation Exemption. This includes both prospective international first-degree entrants and holders of the South African Senior Certificate from 1996. If you have obtained a South African Senior Certificate prior to 1996 alternative arrangements are to be made to apply for exemption. Please consult with the Interim Coordinator for assistance in applying for Matriculation Exemption or visit the following website to submit your application for exemption: http://www.hesa.org.za/he-enrolmentservices/matriculation-board-admissions-regulation. UCT sets additional requirements over and above the minimum legal requirement. In

addition to the legal minimum requirements applicants must also meet the requirements of the program of intended study. Additional information required from undergraduate applicants: Applicants undertaking studies towards Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Bachelor of Fine Arts are required to read page 6-7 of the undergraduate Application Diary (http://www.uct.ac.za/downloads/uct.ac.za/apply/forms/ug_application_diary.pdf), carefully, as these pages indicate the additional portfolio requirements and submissions needed. Please ensure that when submitting these documents online, each document is scanned and uploaded as a single document and kindly ensure that all documents are legible and clear. Applicants are encouraged to work closely with the Interim Coordinator in preparation for the academic application and portfolio requirements. The University of Cape Town closing date for undergraduate applications: Applications are open from the 1 st of April 2014 and close on the 30 th of September 2014. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible given the fact that you may be considered for an early provisional offer and since the scholarship application deadline is on 30 September 2014. Once the UCT application has been submitted, a selection process takes place and applicants will be notified accordingly. STEP 4: Apply online at: (link to online applications) (unless you do not have internet or have an email address that is shared with another 2014 UCT applicant). Within 48 hours of submitting the application online or within 7 days of receiving the paper-based application, UCT will forward correspondence which: Acknowledges receipt of the application; Provides applicants with the applicant number this number is to be used for all future correspondence relating to your merit and scholarship application; Contains unique log-in details for monitoring the application through the selfservice facility online; and Further instructions to follow as requested. Your application for student accommodation is managed by UCT Student Housing Admissions and Advocacy Services (SHAAS) and the International Academic Programs Office collectively. Applications for student accommodation must be received by 30 September 2014. The application is part of the academic application process, whether on paper or online. Scholars Program applicants are advised to tick the first box which reads: I apply for student housing with catering provided. STEP 6: Await the outcome of your academic application. International applicants: It is important to note that some additional documentation might be required once the applicant has been successfully awarded the place of study and scholarship. In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and not currently a South African citizen, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic of South Africa and for purposes of attending the university. Applicants are not required to have applied for the relevant study visa when submitting their academic and scholarship applications. However it is advisable to commence application for a valid passport at this time. Upon acceptance to the university and scholarship program, the applicant will be advised, by the Interim Coordinator, of the necessary steps to follow in order to apply for a study visa, medical cover and accommodation. The following list gives the applicant some forewarning in terms of additional documentation that will be needed during application for the required study visa: 1. Official passport which must be valid for at least 30 days after the end of your proposed stay in South Africa, otherwise your permit will only be granted for the

period of up to 30 days before the expiry date. It should also have at least one unused page left when arriving in South Africa. Passports should not be endorsed or extended; 2. Department of Home Affairs application form (BI-1738); 3. Official letter from UCT confirming acceptance at the institution for the duration of the course. This is a letter from the relevant faculty offering a study place, together with proof of your acceptance of the offers; 4. In the event of persons under the age of 21, UCT will appoint guardians and proof of consent in liaison with the parents of such scholars; 5. Police clearance certificate (less than 6 months old); 6. Medical and radiological reports (less than 6 months old); 7. Relevant certificate if married, widowed, divorced or separated; 8. Yellow fever vaccination certificate if travelling from or through yellow fever endemic area; 9. Proof of medical cover which would be provided by the Foundation; 10. Proof of accommodation arranged by the Foundation; 11. Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition fees, maintenance and incidental costs. This would be substantiated by the Foundation in a sponsorship letter; AND 12. Proof of payment of Repatriation Fees. Accepted Scholars must ensure that a study visa valid for studies at UCT is issued prior to departure for South Africa. Scholars will not be permitted to pre-register or register at UCT without a visa valid for studies at UCT.
