Topsoil may be either naturally occurring field topsoil or blended from a mineral subsoil and organic compost. 2.05 MULCH: Mulch shall be cereal straw from wheat or oat, prairie hay, sudan grass hay, or smooth brome grass hay. Mulch shall be free from noxious weeds as declared by the Kansas State Board of Agriculture. Alfalfa hay shall not be used. Wet straw or hay shall not be used. Mulch for hydroseeding shall be wood cellulose fiber dyed to indicate coverage, easily dispersed, and suspended in water. See part one for mulch selection and anchorage requirements based on slope. 2.06 TACKIFIER: The tackifier for straw, cellulose mulch cover shall consist of a guar gum, plantago, starch, or other organic substance. It shall be mixed with water and distributed over the mulch at the manufacturer s recommended rate for that substance and site condition. 2.07 TEMPORARY EROSION CONTROL BLANKET: Blanket shall consist of excelsior blanket, and shall consist of a machine produced mat of wood excelsior with approximately 80 percent of the fibers having a minimum length of 6 inches. The wood from which the excelsior is cut shall be properly cured to achieve adequately curled and barbed fibers. The blanket shall be of consistent thickness, with the fibers evenly distributed over the entire area of the blanket. The blanket shall be covered on the top side with a netting having a maximum mesh size of 1-1/2 inches by 3 inches, Technical Provisions 7000-02

composed of cotton cord, twisted Kraft paper yarn or degradable extruded plastic. The netting shall be entwined with the excelsior mat for maximum strength and ease of handling. The blanket shall be made smolder resistant with a treatment that shall be nonleaching, non-toxic to vegetation and shall not be toxic or injurious to humans. The blanket shall meet the following requirements: A. Weight: 0.75 pound per square yard, minimum. B. Smolder Resistance: Blanket in air-dry condition shall not flame or smolder for a distance of more than 12 inches from where a lighted cigarette is placed on surface. C. Blanket shall have a service life of 6 months. D. Staples shall be of the 11-gage or heavier steel wire, "U" shaped, and have a length of not less than six inches. 2.08 TILLING AND PLANTING EQUIPMENT: Tilling and planting equipment shall be appropriate to the size of the work. Seed drills shall be set for rows no more than 4 inches apart and a planting depth of 1/4- to 1/2-inch. Rollers shall have a weight of 60 to 90 pounds per linear foot. Hydroseeders shall be capable of producing a uniform distribution of seed, mulch, and fertilizer. Irrigation equipment shall be capable of uniform distribution and shall not cause wash out of topsoil or seed. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 VERIFICATION: Verify that rough grading is complete and accepted. 3.02 SOIL PREPARATION: The top 9 inches of soil in planted areas shall closely resemble a native prairie soil in permeability and fertility. A. Subsoil containing excessive construction aggregate shall be removed and replaced with clean soil. Add water to excessively dry soil. Remove rock, clods and foreign matter larger than 2 inches. B. If topsoil exists on site and has been segregated or where imported topsoil is specified, bring grade to four inches below final grade. Till subsoil to 5-inch depth, pulverizing clods. Place topsoil to a 4-inch depth. C. If topsoil is not segregated or if existing topsoil contains no humus and imported topsoil is not specified, bring grades to one inch below final grade. Till subsoil to 8-inch depth, pulverizing clods. Add 1-inch loose depth of peat moss or wellcomposted organic material; blend with top 4 inches of soil. D. Level by rake or chain drag and lightly compact with roller. Alternately level and compact by back dragging with skid loader. Soil shall be level but not slick and shall compress slightly under hell pressure. Technical Provisions 7000-03
