housing cascina merlata - expo village The building is located in the Cascina Merlata area in the city of Milan, close to the Rho-Pero Trade Fair pole and to the Expo 2015 site. It is part of the Villaggio Expo residential cluster, a new development to be built within the frame of a masterplan designed by Antonio Citterio & Partners and Caputo Partnership, where the representatives and the staff of the countries participating to the 2015 Universal Exposition will be temporarily hosted. Consequently, specific requirements have to be met in terms of energy efficiency, construction planning, costs control and dwellings flexibility: a specific apart-hotel layout has been designed in order to be easily remodeled at the end of the event and the apartments converted into affordable but highly equipped housing units. 6 / 32

housing cascina merlata - expo village The building is made of 56 dwellings, with a high variety of housing types raging from 45 to 100 m2, on 14 floors. The communal ground floor has been conceived to host specific activities and events during the Universal Exposition. A number of technological and design solutions have been introduced since the beginning of the design process, in order to optimize the energy efficiency in the building, including a sunscreen facade protecting the loggias on the southern side and a neighbor waste-to-energy heating cooling system. 7 / 32

housing cascina merlata - cooperative housing The multi-use of certain domestic spaces (such as bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms which traditionally has a single predetermined specific use) and the growing importance of spaces for leisure and wellness, are some of the most important challenges of contemporary housing. The design proposal (1st prize) focuses on such issues, rooting from studies and projects carried out in the second half of 20th century by, among the others, Livio Vacchini (Martinelli apartments, 1971), Charles Correa (Kanchanjunga apartments, 1970-83), Yves Lion (Domus Demain, 1984) and William Jan Neutelings, Alex Wall, Xavier de Geyter, Frank Roodbeen (Habitatge i Ciutat, 1990). 11 / 32

public buildings public spaces yap maxxi An ephemeral installation designed for public spaces being at the same time both defined and undefined: five elements of great size lay, as ruins of a contemporary industrial landscape, on an elevation formed of debris of construction materials a mount of bricks, shingles and ceramics, molded over and over, until they are fine with strong chromatic and material-related peculiarities. On the one hand, the installation is characterized by its main elements the ground, the masks but on the other hand and contemporarily, it is an installation tool, without a pre-determined and unchangeable specific and distinctive purpose. The installation is made of items that can be touched and enjoyed; it is tangible, not imaginary: thanks to the different sizes and positions of the five masks, the latter can be used in many different ways, depending on the users, their needs and wishes and on the time of the day. The masks, influenced by the Italian comedy theater and in particular by the characters of Ettore Petrolini, are hard on the outside, but soft on the inside: users can lay down, sit or lean to see such portion of the sky emerging from the museum and the nearby trees. At night, the concavities of the masks look like large moons fallen on the earth and, at the same time, may be used as scenic design and set for summer events of the MAXXI museum. 13 / 32

public buildings public spaces ASINARA The Island of Asinara (the donkeys island ) was entirely used as a high security prison till the end of the 90s. Considered, together with the Pianosa Island the Italian Alcatraz, the prison was made of several compounds, each hosting prisoners convicted for different offenses. During the Years of Lead, and after the bombs of the early 90s, some branches and in one specific case an entire compound were dedicated to host individuals convicted for serious offences. Designing a refurbishment project of one of the compounds, Trabuccato, in the frame of a competition organized by the Coastal Conservation Agency of the Sardinia region, was a particularly unique opportunity considering the importance of the Island in the recent history of Italy and the beauty of the incredibly untouched landscape, 17 / 32

EXHIBITION DESIGN background kingdom of bahrain pavilion The exhibition installation of the Kingdom of Bahrain pavilion at the 13th Biennale di Venezia consists of five projections of background imagery from Bahrain projected in simultaneous Venetian time. 25 / 32

EXHIBITION DESIGN background kingdom of bahrain pavilion By isolating scenery which is normally supplemented by a news anchor, a news bar and sound commentary, the installation seeks to bring to the foreground what normally looms in the background. Through seemingly random scenes of Bahraini urban landscape, the installation evokes our construction of an imaginary of remote urban landscapes through their fragmented appearance in the media and in our living rooms. 26 / 32

EXHIBITION DESIGN tortona stories Tortona Stories is an exploration of the Italian countryside through the transect of mountaintop to river plain. The project traces discrete phenomena in the Tortona region, where entrepreneurs and businesses, motivated by economic, administrative, and cultural forces are shaping the countryside through the products they make. Tortona Stories looks at how products, and by proxy the countryside, are mediated by these broader forces, manifested in a network of seemingly unrelated objects: guides, product catalogues, government laws, news clippings, prizes, brochures, etc. Ultimately, the countryside is a product of this mediation, birthed from words, images, laws, and ideas. 28 / 32
