Carrier specific is so important to your choices, to get a reduced phone price (contract) Ie. iphone 5with 2 year plan is $100. Buy the phone unlocked from Apple.com, approx. $600 Unlocked phones (cost more to buy upfront) can save you money in the long term (less costly monthly plan over 2 years).
