Introduction 1 Challenge A major challenge with nearly all signalized traffic cabinets is limited or no space available for installing a Battery Backup System (BBS). Most agencies and Department of Transportations are forced to pay for an expensive external enclosure or piggy-back cabinet to provide battery backup for their traffic cabinets. In addition, the lead acid batteries used for Battery Backup Systems and other UPS systems throughout the traffic industry are large, heavy, and contain dangerous chemicals, which prior to disposal require special handling. Most lead acid Battery Backup Systems need costly routine maintenance 2-3 times per year and if the maintenance is neglected, agencies are exposed to potential liabilities and diminished backup runtime performance. Solution Blue Earth Energy Power Solutions (BE EPS) has developed the solution to your Battery Backup System problems. The UltraPower-Stealth Battery Backup System (UPStealth), built to run traffic intersections in the event of utility power failure, is a BBS that utilizes a safe, rechargeable, and non-corrosive chemistry called Nickel-Zinc ( NiZn ). The UPStealth s unique Living-Hinge Battery Panel design allows for installation of the battery panel in the primary traffic cabinet between the cabinet rack and cabinet shell. This unique and unprecedented design makes for quick and easy installation, typically in less than one hour. In addition, for NEMA Cabinet users, there is an innovative NEMA UPStealth Battery Panel which can be mounted on the top or underside of the NEMA cabinet shelf. A rack mount version is also available for other Transportation Cabinets. Product 3 Inverter/Controllers The UPStealth Inverter is an Intelligent Two-Stage Battery Back-up System. Stage One runs continuously. It contains a transient protection circuit which reduces the voltage spikes on the AC power that is coming into the Cabinet. The transient protection can handle 480 joules of energy and 39,000 Amps peak current. In addition, the input circuit contains an RF filter, which provides attenuation of line noise of 25 db at 10 KHz, 65 db at 100 KHz, and 100 db at 1 MHz. Stage Two switches over to the battery power when the power line is outside user programmed parameters. The AC Line voltage thresholds where the UPStealth switches over to battery power can be set from the front panel of the Inverter or from a PC connected to the USB port. The depth of discharge (DOD) can also be adjusted, allowing the user to maximize battery back-up time while preserving battery life. The UPStealth can also be programmed to switch to battery backup based on the time of day, which reduces Utility costs during peak energy times. This function is created through a user-programmable contact closure. PRODUCT: 170 UPStealth Inverter/Controller The 170 Inverter/Controller is a 19'' EIA Rack mountable, intelligent two stage battery backup device compatible with the Living-Hinge and NEMA battery panels. 170 Inverter/Controller (170 style): 17 wide x 13 deep (excluding connectors), 3.5 high (2U), and weighs 18 pounds. PRODUCT: NEMA UPStealth Inverter/Controller The NEMA Inverter/Controller is a shelf mount, intelligent two stage battery backup device compatible with the Living-Hinge and NEMA battery panels. NEMA Inverter/Controller: 17 wide x 8 deep x 8 tall and weighs 20 lbs. 170 UPStealth Inverter/Controller The Inverter/Controller can turn each Battery Panel ON and OFF and monitors the condition of each string of batteries through the individual chargers. Because each UPStealth Battery Panel has its own chargers, adding more battery panels to the system DOES NOT affect the battery charge time of 4 hours. Up to sixteen panels can be used in one Battery Backup System. Each Battery Panel has multiple integrated battery chargers and controllers that communicate with the Inverter through a serial communication interface. Each panel may vary in weight depending upon the panel configuration; the battery weight for a standard 500 Watt panel is 30 pounds. NEMA UPStealth Inverter/Controller
4 8-Programmable Relays The Inverter (170/NEMA) provides access to 8-programmable relays, which are controlled by power line conditions, and user selected settings of the UPStealth Battery Backup System. Each relay has 2-Amp normally closed and normally open contacts. The Relay connector plugs into the rear panel or the front, depending on the configuration and can be removed without tools. There are four circular plastic connectors for connecting to the UPStealth panels. 42-Amp pins are used for the battery connections. The NEMA inverter option is available with the same functions, however, all components are located on the front for easy access. The UPStealth Inverter and its 8-programmable relays can control several different parameters including: 170 UPStealth Inverter/Controller Power Failure Low Battery Time of Day Temperature Time Delay (e.g. for Flash) On Battery Nickel Zinc Chemistry Nickel Zinc (NiZn) was chosen for its: High energy density and performance Environmentally friendly materials Durability and overall safety of the cells Life, which is at least twice as long as Lead Acid Batteries NiZn batteries have no transportation restrictions, are certified as recyclable by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Coalition, and are RoHS Compliant. There are no restrictions with regard to the disposal of expired cells. NiZn batteries will not explode, catch fire, nor outgas hazardous fumes even when abused. In addition, the NiZn rechargeable chemistry does not dissipate any significant heat. Blue Earth spent considerable time choosing the best rechargeable battery chemistry for the Traffic Industry. USB Port Ethernet USB Port and Ethernet The Ethernet feature allows the UPStealth Battery Backup System to communicate via NT/CIP protocol. 170 UPStealth Inverter/Controller
5 Force On The "Force On" feature allows the UPStealth to be turned on and supply AC power when there is no AC Line power available. This allows the end user to take the UPStealth Controller and one or more battery packs out to a location where there is a power failure or no power available and power up a Traffic Cabinet or other equipment that requires 120 VAC power. Living-Hinge UPStealth Battery Panel (500W) Wall Charging Adapter The UPStealth Wall Charging Adapter plugs into the barrel connector located on the battery panel, while the other end of the charging adapter plugs into a 120 VAC wall outlet. This eliminates the frustration of having to trickle charge like lead-acid requires. Also, if there is an intersection that needs extended battery backup this feature allows for easy hot swapping of the freshly charged battery panels. Living-Hinge UPStealth Battery Panel (300W) LCD Display There is a 4 line by 20-character LCD display with an LED back light to display the status of the system and for setting its parameters. The Inverter Front Panel Display normally shows the power line voltage, cabinet current consumption, and battery status. Because of the UPStealth s intelligence, it can monitor the cabinet voltage and current, and knows the battery status. It can calculate the back-up time that is available at any given time without any input from the user. An event log is incorporated in the Inverter, which shows a history of the events that have occurred to the cabinet power. The total number and length of power failures are stored in memory and can be displayed on the Inverter front panel or uploaded to a laptop. The relay functions are programmable from the front panel of the Inverter and/or by a laptop using the USB port. A user-friendly, menu-driven display and keypad are used to set parameters in the UPStealth. The keypad selects the menu and the display shows the options to select. LCD Display
Operation 6 Operation The UltraPower-Stealth Battery Backup System is an intelligent multiple processor power control system. Each 48 Volt string of cells has its own charger and monitor board that is controlled by the Inverter. Each charger is individually addressable and controllable by the Inverter. The Inverter can turn all or just some of the battery chargers on and off in addition to being able to turn the output of each battery string on and off. Status information for each battery string in each battery panel is also available through the serial interface. Each charger monitors the temperature of its battery string and adjusts the charging voltage and current to the cells. The charger also monitors the current going out of the batteries and can turn off the battery pack output if it determines the load is too high. By monitoring the voltage and current into and out of the battery, the charger can determine the capacity of the battery string and relay that information to the Inverter. The Inverter controls the operation of the UPStealth BBS. The Inverter monitors the power line continuously to determine whether it is supplying the correct power to the Transportation Cabinet. When the Inverter determines that the AC Power Line does not meet pre-set parameters, the Cabinet power will be switched to the battery power.
