BASIC FIRE RECRUIT ACADEMY Application Procedures Information Sheet I. Minimum qualifications for becoming State of Florida certified as a paid combat firefighter: 1. 18 years of age or older 2. High school graduate or equivalent 3. No record or conviction of a felony or misdemeanor related to firefighting 4. Pass a thorough medical examination 5. Ability to participate in vigorous physical activities without restrictions 6. Possess a valid Florida Driver s License or capable of obtaining one 7. Non use of tobacco products for one year prior to employment II. Application Procedures: 1. Complete and return a preliminary application provided by the Fire Science Department. 2. Provide verification of your EMT or Paramedic training to the Fire Science Department. 3 Attend the orientation meeting. 4 Pass the physical agility test. You will be notified by mail of the date of the mandatory orientation meeting and the physical agility testing date. Students will be considered for admission based on the date their completed preliminary application is submitted. Preference will be given to IRSC graduates with degree and/or certification. Day class: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (approximately 13 weeks) 3. Periodically the Basic Fire Recruit Academy is offered on a part-time basis, during the evenings and weekends. Evening class: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 10:00 pm; and every other Saturdays 8:00 am 5:00 pm (approximately 28 weeks).

Financial Aid Notice to Fire Academy Applicants Please be aware the Fire Academy (Fire Fighting Basic Recruit) is NOT eligible for Federal Financial Aid (Pell Grant, FSEOG, Subsidized Stafford Loan, Un-Subsidized Stafford Loan, and Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students PLUS). Even though you may be receiving Federal Financial Aid during any previous term of attendance, once you enter the Fire Academy, your Federal Financial Aid will be stopped. You are encouraged to seek other funding for this program if needed, such as the W.I.A. program. Information on this program is available at any Florida One-Stop Center. Also students who qualify for Florida Bright Futures may receive funding through that program. 5/11
