Cardiac Surgeons Appointments - Call (773) 702-2500 Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD E-mail: jeevan@uchicago.edu High risk reoperative cardiac surgery, Heart transplantation, Minimally invasive cardiac surgery, Valvular heart diseases, Ventricular assist devices (LVADs), Bloodless/ transfusionfree cardiac surgery Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam specializes in the surgical management of heart failure, and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 heart transplants and countless cardiac surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Dr. Jeevanandam has a special interest in treating patients traditionally considered inoperable. He has repaired damaged hearts in several patients awaiting transplant, enabling those patients to forgo transplantation. He also has successfully performed transplants involving patients who do not fit the standard criteria for transplant. Additionally, Dr. Jeevanandam has received national attention for his skill in performing bloodless cardiac surgery, which requires the use of precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss during the procedure--sparing the need for a blood transfusion. He specializes in adult cardiac surgery with emphasis in minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. An active researcher, Dr. Akhter studies molecular mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy and how they lead to heart failure, with the goal of identifying novel therapeutic strategies to prevent this disease process. His laboratory also investigates methods to improve protection of the heart during cardiac surgery and basic mechanisms of donor heart dysfunction. Dr. Akhter s clinical research projects focus on recovery of heart function after ventricular assist device implantation and outcomes following mechanical circulatory support. His research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education. Cardiac Surgeons Appointments - Call (773) 702-2500 Jai Raman, MD, M Med, PhD E-mail: jraman@surgery.bsd.uchicago.edu Arterial grafting, Beating-heart surgery, Minimally invasive heart surgery, Heart and Multiorgan transplantation, Heart valve preservation Dr. Jai Raman is a highly skilled cardiac and thoracic surgeon known for his efforts to develop innovative surgical procedures, especially for heart failure treatment. He helped develop ventricular containment (wrap procedure), which uses a unique mesh bag to stop the heart from enlarging in patients with heart failure. He performed the first eight of these procedures in the world. Dr. Raman also helped develop Basal Annuloplasty of the Cardia Externally (BACE)--a new off-pump device for the treatment of leaky mitral valves. Dr. Raman has expertise in minimally invasive bypass surgery performed without splitting the sternum. He has also worked closely with cardiologists and industry to improve ablative treatment methods and to promote the use of biventricular pacing for the treatment of heart failure. His work to develop new techniques to repair mitral and tricuspid valves and adapt minimal access techniques has been particularly successful. These procedures have spared many patients from requiring full sternotomy or heart valve replacement.
