Chapter 3 Basic Concept for research and doing research Kosin Chamnongthai Research Methodology 1/2010

Intro Knowledge ld in the past might not be directly useful in the present problems What we teach is not what we learn from teacher What we learned from teachers are limited, and look like copy even not all If you have to go back to your teacher for new knowledge, it means you follow other people in updating technology

Intro (2) Everyone can create new knowledge even the ones who graduated only primary school When we see new knowledge created by other people, we might feel it is easy to find. When we try to create new knowledge, it is very difficult even simple things.

Definition and output What is research?

What is research? (2) Definition and meaning of research

What is research? (3) How to set up research problem

What is research? (4) A problem might consist of many single problems * One algorithm can solve only one single problem

An example to set up a problem What is research? (5) When researcher knows the cause, he/she might be able to create idea to solve the problem

What is research? (6) Knowledge discovered in the past and nowadays

What is research? (7) Doing research for thesis writing

Basic concept of researcher

Basic concept of researcher (1) Specification of researcher: Do not use bias or prior knowledge To imagine for creating his/her idea To select tool that is appropriate for problem condition To verify and evaluate his/her own idea To consider advantage/disadvantage, side effect To think and explain from cause to output

Basic concept of researcher (2) No bias: To make decision based on real data without bias Ex: broken golf shaft

Basic concept of researcher (3) The adjusted or modified algorithm and/or method belongs to the man who adjusted or modified. Researcher needs to know the theories in the past, but might not trust them as the ones forever. The theories that we have learned have been adjusted and modified by previous people

Basic concept of researcher (4) Researcher might create his/her own idea Starting from simple idea New idea created by other people even difficult one might not be seen as wonderful one egg of Columbus

Basic concept of researcher (5) Researcher selects appropriate tools for problem conditions In technology fields which people focus on invention and application, research points might be on selection of appropriate tools in mathematics and basic science

Basic concept of researcher (6) Researcher might verify and evaluate idea If we do not verify, no one believes Researchers have to evaluate the proposed idea in order to know the numerical results, safety, reliability, and so on Researchers can use calculation and/or simulation and/or experiments in order to evaluate the proposed idea

Basic concept of researcher (7) Researchers have to consider advantage/disadvantage g/ g and side effect Every thing has merit and demerit. Nothing has only good views. Proposed method for solving problem has to trade off To discuss the limitation and side effect is To discuss the limitation and side effect is for safety of public

Basic concept of researcher (8) To think and explain from cause to results People will accept the information when it has reason and cause Reason might match with results Results without reason can not be believed.

How to do research? (1) To create knowledge looks like to mine the treasure

How to do research? (2) How people p evaluate research works?

How to do research? (3) Steps for doing research Step 1 To determine research problem Step 2 Literature review Step 3 Theme up Step 4 To imagine idea and how to Step 4 To imagine idea and how to solve the problem in the theme

How to do research? (4) Steps for doing research (cont) Step 5 To determine proposed system, method, model, algorithm in detail Step 6 To verify the proposed one Step 7 To analyze the results, and discuss Step 8 To conclude and write report
