USER GUIDE Congratulations on your new HEGEL! Every Hegel product is based on a simple philosophy: The audio reproduction instrument shall reproduce the original musical sound, purely and naturally. It shall use Scandinavian design reflecting natural music reproduction and styling to fit in with any interior. The products shall be easy to operate and shall be manufactured according to the best quality principles. All HEGEL products are created with acoustical instruments in a concert situation as point of reference. The music is reproduced exactly like the original and is limited only by the quality of the recording. Our aim is to give you the best possible music experience! 2

SOUND ADVICE The Hegel CDP4A High End CD-player is easy to connect and operate and requires no prior technical knowledge. However, to get the most out of the player's superior sound and music quality, we have provided a brief description of the connections and use of the player in order to provide a total music experience. We recommend keeping this user guide for future reference. GENERAL USE Power Open / Close Prev. Track Next Track Stop Play The CD player has only two knobs. Each knob has 3 functions. Power on / off The CD-player is switched on by pushing the top of the button on the left hand side of the front panel. A flashing " -- -- --" blue light in the display indicates that power has been switched on. By pushing the same button one more time the power is switched off. Open / close Pushing the top of the button on the right hand side of the front panel will open the CD tray, and the CD can be placed in the tray. To close the CD tray push the same button one more time. The CD tray can also be closed by pushing the tray loader gently inwards. Play 3

To start the CD push the lower right button on the right hand side of the front panel. Pause If the play button is pushed when a track is playing the player will go into pause mode. One more push at the button and the player will start playing again from the same position on the CD. The pause function is indicated by the display flashing the track and time when the pause was selected. The pause function can also be operated the same way with the play button of the remote control. Stop To stop the CD push the lower left button on the right hand side of the front panel. Next track Pushing the lower right button on the left hand side of the front panel makes the player jump to the next track on the CD. For every time this button is pushed the player will move one track forward. The player will automatically start playing from the beginning of the selected track each time this button is pushed. Previous track Pushing the lower left button on the left hand side of the front panel makes the player jump to the beginning of the track that is playing. For every time this button is pushed the track playing will move one track backwards. The player will automatically start playing from the beginning of the selected track each time this button is pushed. Additional functions available on the remote control By using the Hegel Remote control RC2 the additional functions search ( backward, forward ) and repeat can be selected. Of course play, stop, previous track and next track can also be selected from the remote control. Forward Searching fast forward is selected by holding down the forward button on the remote control. The search speed will start slow and will increase to high after about 20 seconds. Rewind Searching fast backwards is selected by holding down the rewind button on the remote control. The search speed will start slow and will increase to high after about 20 seconds. 4

RE P cd will be displayed for two seconds in the display, and will be repeated for two seconds every ten seconds to show that the repeat CD mode has been selected. To cancel "repeat CD", push the repeat button on the remote control two times. Repeat track To repeat the track playing, push the repeat button on the remote control twice. RE P t r will be displayed for two seconds in the display, and will be repeated for two seconds every ten seconds to show that the repeat track mode has been selected. To cancel "repeat track", push the repeat button on the remote control one time. Back panel of CD-player Digital output Analog output Left High End Compact Disc Player CLASS 1 Hegel, Oslo, Norway LASER PRODUCT Right Right Left From left to right the connectors are: AC Power connection 230V / 115V / 100V AC dependent on country. Digital output Phono / RCA Balanced signal outputs XLR right / left Unbalanced outputs Phono / RCA left / right We recommend connecting the signal cables to the CD-player when the CD-player and all the other units of the audio system is switched off. The CD-player has two types of analog audio outputs: unbalanced audio signal with RCA plugs (phono plugs) and true balanced audio signal with XLR plugs (pin 2 is positive phase, pin 3 is negative phase and pin 1 is chassis ground). 5

We will recommend using the balanced XLR outputs from the CD-player, as these will have the absolute highest level of sound quality. The CD-player has got one balanced transformer coupled RCA standard SPDIF digital audio output. Digital signal level is 0.5Vpp when terminated in 75 ohm load. This is the standard load impedance of external DAC's and other recording equipment. AUDIO OUTPUT LOW PASS FILTER The audio low pass filter in the Hegel CDP4A is factory set for a slow roll of to preserve a highest possible accuracy of timing information without excessive ringing in the time domain. In normal use Hegel recommend to use the output filter in the slow roll off factory setting mode. However if the user has a special requirement there is a possibility to change the setting of the low pass filter to a fast roll off mode by moving a jumper on the DAC-board inside the player. For information about changing the setting of the low pass filter please contact Hegel main office at info@hegel.com HEGEL REMOTE CONTROL RC2 The Hegel CDP4A can be controlled by the included Hegel RC2 system remote control. Like other Hegel products, the number of buttons on the remote is kept to a minimum. The Hegel system remote control will also control other Hegel products like amplifiers and preamplifiers, avoiding the need of several different remote control devices. The remote control uses two standard 1.5-volt LR03 AAA batteries. To insert the batteries please use a normal type cross head screwdriver to gently remove the four screws in the bottom of the remote control. Be careful and use a normal cross head screwdriver to remove the four Philips cross head screws. Do not use a Pozidrive cross head screwdriver, it can damage the head of the screws. Be sure to insert the batteries with the correct polarity with + sign and sign as shown inside the battery holder, and be careful when inserting the batteries to not damage the battery holder. Be careful when inserting the screws after fitting the batteries. Please turn the screws gently by hand first to avoid damaging the threads in the remote control body. The threads are made in a soft metal and can be damaged if screws are inserted by force. Do not tighten the screws to hard, as this also can damage the screws and the soft metal body of the remote control. Please do not drop the remote control hard down in the floor, as this can damage internal parts of the remote control and the battery holder. To avoid damage to the remote control by leakage from the batteries during transport and storage, the remote control is supplied without batteries from Hegel. 6

USE & PLACEMENT OF CD-PLAYER The HEGEL CDP4A should be placed on a flat, hard surface for proper isolation against vibrations. The CD-player must NEVER be placed on top of an integrated amplifier or power amplifier. The heat from the amplifier will make the laser pick-up system work worse than normal, and also the life-time of the laser unit will be reduced when heated up by an amplifier standing directly below the CDplayer. A certain space is required for air circulation above and below the CD-player. The CD-player must never be placed on a carpet or similar surface that obstructs air circulation through the component. Nor must it be covered while in use or placed on a narrow shelf or in another confined space. The CD-player performs best after being switched on for about 30 minutes for heating up. The CD-player will need some time of break-in before maximum sound quality can be experienced. CLEANING The top cover, side panels and knobs are made of brushed and anodized aluminum, while the front panel is made of glass bead blasted and anodized aluminum. Fingerprints or stains on the front panel, knobs or top cover can be removed with a cloth moistened with warm water or with a mild detergent suitable for cleaning mirrors and bathroom. TRANSPORT AND SHIPPING OF CD-PLAYER If you are moving the CD-player over a longer distance or packing the CD-player for shipping please follow these instructions to secure the CD-drawer from opening during transport: 1. First put a plastic bag around the CD-player, placing the front panel of the CD-player tight against one of the sides of the plastic bag. 2. Insert the CD-player in the two white shock absorbers, one in the left side and one in the right side of the player 3. Use a 40-50 mm wide plastic tape to make two tight turns around the CD-player in the front to back direction, being sure to hold the CD-drawer and knobs in place during transport. We wish you good luck in setting up and connecting your new CD-player and hope that it will give you many years of joyful natural sounding music experiences! 7
