May 31, 2013 I would like to thank everyone for the texts, e-mails and phone calls I received after the recent tornados in Oklahoma. Our home in Shawnee survived, but many were not so lucky. I have had several individuals and chapters ask about how they can help the areas devastated in Oklahoma. Since our local chapters are not set up to be able to receive or document monies donated, it is our suggestion to make donations to the Red Cross or to the United Way, with instructions on where you want your donation directed. Both organizations are working tirelessly to furnish housing, food and clothing. You can also make donations to our local churches that may be associated with churches in your various areas. Again, I appreciate the outpouring of support we truly are the "caring and sharing association. President's Message As our state was dealing with several days of bad weather, and the deadly aftermath, I was driving back from the Appraisal Foundation (TAF) and North American Council of Appraisal Organizations (NACAO) meetings that were held in Savannah, GA. I was honored to be able to represent NAIFA during the public meetings, the sponsors meeting and the NACAO meeting. During our TAF Sponsoring Organizations Group meeting we also held an Alliance for Valuation Education Sponsors Meeting. The purpose of this meeting was to elect 3 regents for the newly formed AVE Board. Each sponsoring organization (who chose to participate in the AVE) was allowed to nominate 3 individuals. I chose to only nominate 1 person who I felt would bring the most knowledge and experience to the table. I nominated Chuck Blau, IFAC. Chuck served on the task force appointed to direct the development of the AVE. Chuck is well respected, and was able to attend the meeting and show the passion he has for this project. There were 18 names on the ballot from 8 different organizations. I m proud to announce that Chuck had the highest amount of votes, and therefore received the 3-year term. Steve Sousa with the Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Appraisers (MBREA) received a 2-year term, and Michael Lohmeier with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) received a 1-year term. Congratulations to Chuck. It felt really good to see that NAIFA was definitely not invisible. TAF Board of Trustees later selected 3 individuals at their meeting. The new group of 6 will choose a 7th member sometime this summer. Before the NACAO meetings, I was approached by the current chair regarding the need for a new chair appointment. NAIFA has not had an individual in the chair position in approximately 8 years. I was asked to consider being chair for this year. Although I have practiced saying no.the word "yes sailed right out of my mouth. At the end of the meeting I was presented the rubber chicken (that should have been my first clue). Again, NAIFA is increasing in visibility. I know we (and many other areas) are experiencing bad weather again this week. Stay safe, and be careful. Sincerely, Molly Leatherwood, IFA Molly Leatherwood, IFA NAIFA President

NAIFA TV: Video Highlight In this week's video, Jeff Otteau, IFA, focuses on trends currently affecting real property appraisers. You will gain a wealth of insight into the economic barometers to watch for and what they mean to appraisers both now and in the future. Watch the video below or access our full topical video lineup at NAIFA TV. Jeff Otteau, IFA, presents his National Economic Overview A Message from the NAIFA Birmingham Chapter The Birmingham Chapter of the NAIFA recently sponsored two days of continuing education at the Birmingham Board of Realtors Building in Homewood, AL. "Residential Reporting Hitting all the Bases and the "Appraisers Guide to Environmental Issues were the classes offered with 47 attending the first day and 34 for the Environmental class. Our Chapter has found that sponsoring classes over the years has built a strong camaraderie among appraisers. We have been trying to give more value than the cost of the courses and this has strengthened our membership base. The Alabama Appraiser Board was represented by Dot Wood and the State Board Investigator, Col Joe Dixon, was also in attendance During the Environmental class, there was a loud knock on the classroom door and a masked man with a white protective suite entered the room and announced that he was from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and that we were all restricted from leaving the building. It ended up being W. Carl Pennington, IFA our Chapter President making a point as to the power
of the EPA. The point was well made! The class covered mold, chemical (dioxin) release, asbestos, meth labs and other sources of contamination. During our lunch break, Cliff Long, Association Executive of the Birmingham Board of Realtors talked with the class about Appraisers forming a committee as part of the Birmingham Board. He emphasized the need for more communication between agents and appraisers in light of the changes in the appraisal process by the Dodd-Frank Act. Our instructor of choice for over the past decade has been Michael Orman, IFAS (PNP) from Memphis, TN. He is professional, personable, knowledgeable, and identifies well with our market. I believe Bill Steele would be proud! Heartfelt thanks to the chapter volunteer team who organized another successful educational program for our appraiser community, and for all of you who attended and enthusiastically participated in the program. NAIFA continues to make a positive impact on the profession in Alabama! Ronald J. Zielke, IFA Acting Chapter Secretary Class coordinators Marc Stalker, IFA, and Carl Pennington,IFA
