Vascular surgery services An internationally renowned service. The Vascular Unit at St Thomas Hospital is a specialist unit providing diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders of the blood vessels. It is the largest vascular unit in the UK which provides a high quality service with an international reputation. Our state-of the-art facilities allow us to offer pioneering treatments for many vascular conditions. Facilities We have a hybrid theatre suite, offering patients pioneering minimally invasive vascular procedures, and an excellent vascular ultrasound service providing diagnostic services, graft surveillance and AAA screening and surveillance programme. We currently have two dedicated wards with a total of 50 inpatient beds and a physiotherapy service to ensure patients are mobile and have access to vital equipment they may need to get back to daily life as quickly and smoothly as possible. The department has a 12 bed rehabilitation unit for adult patients who have had major amputation, with major amputation undertaken at St Thomas Hospital by our expert team. Once patients are able to leave the unit they are transferred to our community outpatient hub, where we provide lifelong prosthetic and medical care including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling. We also have a day case veins unit that specialises in treating patients with varicose veins using minimally invasive techniques. The treatments are done as walk in walk out procedures and are very popular with patients.
As a national tertiary referral centre for complex aortic disease, specialising in endovascular and open surgery for aneurysmal disease and aortic dissection, we have a team of specialist surgeons, radiologists, physicians and nurses to look after our patients. We can proudly say our mortality rates from surgery carried out in the unit are well below the national average with our endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) mortality rate at 0.8% and our elective open aneurysm mortality rate was 1.4%. St Thomas is the hub of the South East Thames Vascular Network. We provide emergency and elective vascular services to people living in south east London and Kent.
