Sustainable Future tour > Before your visit Leave the car behind 1 What does sustainable mean? When you visit The Living Rainforest, you will learn about rainforests and sustainability. What do you think the word 'sustainable' means? Think about how you travelled to school today. Circle the type of transport you used: bicycle on foot car train bus Which of these means of transport is the most sustainable? Can you explain why? Which is the least sustainable and why?

Sustainable Future tour > Before your visit Leave the car behind 2 How did the rest of your class travel today? Gather all of the information you need, and then construct a bar chart to show these figures. What percentage of your class travel in a sustainable way? How could you make your journeys more sustainable?

Sustainable Future tour > During your visit Animals under threat During your tour you saw many different animals from the world's rainforests. Many of these animals are threatened in the wild. Draw a picture of one threatened animal. Can you remember why your chosen animal is a threatened species? Would you like to keep one of these animals for a pet? Explain your answer. Do you think that capturing animals from the forests and selling them for pets is a sustainable activity? Explain your answer.

Sustainable Future tour > During your visit Survival in the rainforest 1 People have lived in the rainforests of the world for thousands of years. The Amazon rainforest used to support several million people! The forest provides for all the daily needs of these 'indigenous' people - their food, shelter, fuel and medicines. Their way of life is very sustainable. They take care not to destroy too much of the rainforest because it provides everything they need to survive. Could you survive in the rainforest? Have another walk in the rainforest houses. Imagine you had to survive using only the things you could find in them. Complete the boxes to show which plants or animals you would use to provide you with shelter, food, fuel and medicines. Don't forget that you might need to hunt for some food and then cook it! food shelter medicine fuel

Sustainable Future tour > During your visit Survival in the rainforest 2 Write a few sentences explaining how you would use some of the plants and animals listed on the previous page. Would you like to live in the forest, and rely on it for all your needs? When you get back to school share your ideas with the rest of your class and decide who would be the most likely to survive!

Sustainable Future tour > During your visit What shall we grow? Have another look around the rainforest houses. Find a plant that is grown in commercial plantations. Draw a picture of the plant and describe what it looks like. Can you name a country where this crop is grown? Many tropical crops are now being grown in a more sustainable way, and some are sold in this country under the 'Fairtrade' system. All the items produced under this system carry a 'Fairtrade' logo. Draw the logo in the box (hint: there are some items in The Living Rainforest shop with the logo, or you can look at the signs on the café tables). Next time you visit your local supermarket see how many items you can find with the Fairtrade logo. You could also visit the Fairtrade website: www.fairtrade.org.uk

Sustainable Future tour > After your visit The missing word 1 When you visited The Living Rainforest you discussed some of the reasons why the forests are being cut down. Unfortunately, most of these activities are unsustainable - once the trees have been cleared the forest takes hundreds of years to re-establish. Can you find all these words in the word square below? They are all connected with rainforests and deforestation.
