Z PowerPoint Standards February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc.

Introduction Our brand is expressed in many ways our behavior, our products, our communications. The new PowerPoint template provides the foundation for clear, consistent, and impactful communication both externally and internally. In this document you will find examples and instructions on how to use the new template, including font usage, graphics, color, photography, and layout. February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 2

Title screen options There are three title screen layouts to choose from: Some presentations dictate the need for image-based title screens, while others lend themselves to text-only pages. Page 1 of 2 Layout: Title Slide (Large Image with Title) Layout: Title Slide (Red Background) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 3

Title screen options The third title screen layout option uses type placed over an image. Make sure the type is readable. Use white type over dark images and black type over light images. If an image is too busy to clearly read the title, use the title slide option with text above the image as shown on page 3. Page 2 of 2 Layout: Title Slide (Large Image) Layout: Title Slide (Large Image) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 4

Standard layout options Layout continuity from frame to frame conveys a stronger and more powerful message. The template ensures headlines, sub-headlines, images, and graphics are implemented consistently throughout the presentation. The most commonly used versions of PowerPoint do not automatically crop images within the provided grid. Use a photo editing program to crop your images based on the dimensions listed in this section. Page 1 of 3 9.68" 2.78" 5.33" 2.19" February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 5

Visual hierarchy The PowerPoint template arranges each element in order of importance through size, color, and spacing. Use the hierarchy that is defined within the template to create organized content. Headline Sub-headine Body Copy Image February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 8

Fonts Our corporate font is Meta; however, for copy in PowerPoint, Arial is a good substitute, because it is installed on every computer as a part of the operating system. Each page in our new PowerPoint template has a pre-set size of Arial in various layouts for you to choose from, eliminating the need to create your own sizes and placement of copy. Section Title Arial 12.5 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Small Sub-headline Arial Bold 11 point R 100, G 100, B 100 Small Copy Arial 12 point R 100, G 100, B 100 Medium Sub-headline Arial Bold 14 point R 100, G 100, B 100 Medium Copy Arial 15 point R 100, G 100, B 100 Large Copy Arial 28 point R 100, G 100, B 100 Small Cover Title Arial 28 point Black: R 0, G 0, B 0 Large Cover Title Arial 35 point Black: R 0, G 0, B 0 White: R 255, G 255, B 255 Headline Arial 22 point Black R 0, G 0, B 0 February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 9

Copy size options Three sizes of copy are available. The small copy size works best for long statements in cases where a a few people are sitting quite close to the presentation screen, or in cases where the presentation will be available in printed form as well as projected onto a screen. Page 1 of 3 Section Title (optional) Arial 12.5 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Headline Arial 22 point R 0, G 0, B 0 Small Sub-Headline (optional) Arial Bold 11 point Space After 5 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Small Copy Size Arial 12 point Space After 11 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Layout: Small Copy with 1 Object February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 10

Copy size options The medium copy size is the most versatile size and can be used for any presentation. Page 2 of 3 Headline Arial 22 point R 0, G 0, B 0 Medium Sub-Headline (optional) Arial Bold 14 point Space After 5 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Medium Copy Size Arial 15 point Space After 16 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Layout: Medium Copy with Object (x1) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 11

Copy size options If your presentation calls for short, powerful statements, the large copy size is a good option. Page 3 of 3 Section Title (optional) Arial 12.5 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Headline Arial 22 point R 0, G 0, B 0 Large Copy Size Arial 28 point Space After 18 point R 166, G 166, B 166 Layout: Large Copy February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 12

Three column A three-column grid can be used for organizing copy. The provided grid is consistent throughout the PowerPoint template and can be used with varying amounts of image-and text-based content. Layout: Three Column Small Copy Layout: 2 Column Medium Copy with Object (x1) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 13

Lists Use the List master slides to create well-formatted lists. The small copy size works best for larger amounts of content; the medium copy size works well for short, one-word points. Layout: List Small Copy Layout: List Large Copy February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 14

Image standards Good photography communicates powerful messages. Use Herman Miller approved photography from the Image Library. Refrain from using stock photography or clip art in presentations. The examples below show good uses of graphic images as well as photography within the template. Image-based layout examples Large-scale and full-page images create visual impact. A strong horizontal image can be used with a short headline and a caption. Page 2 of 6 Layout: Photo with Headline Layout: Photo with Headline and Caption February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 17

Image-based layout examples Copy can be included with multiple images to communicate large amounts of information. Page 3 of 6 Layout: Small Copy with 3 Images Layout: Medium Copy with 3 Images February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 18

Image-based layout examples The PowerPoint template implements a grid system meant for multiple images. In the slide examples below you can see how the grid provides the basis for various layouts depending on the number of images you need to show. Page 4 of 6 Layout: Multiple Images (x6) Layout: Multiple Images (x2) Option B February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 19

Image-based layout examples White-sweep images should be used only with other white-sweep images. Don t mix white-sweeps with environment shots. Page 5 of 6 Layout: Multiple Images (x5) Option A Layout: Multiple Images (x3) Option B February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 20

Image-based layout examples Use imagery with complementary coloring and simplistic compositions to avoid busy layouts. Page 6 of 6 Layout: Multiple Images (x3) Option A Layout: Multiple Images (x2) Option A February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 21

Chart/graphs color schemes The following color schemes are provided as guidelines for color use in charts and illustrations. Color scheme 1 R255 G51 B0 R180 G180 B180 R100 G165 B150 R180 G120 B100 R0 G60 B95 Color scheme 2 R255 G51 B0 R125 G205 B215 R230 G225 B75 R200 G195 B185 R0 G0 B0 Color scheme 3 R255 G51 B0 R170 G60 B30 R235 G175 B200 R125 G125 B45 R200 G200 B40 February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 22

Charts and graphs from Excel You can create a chart or graph in your presentation. When you create a new chart in PowerPoint, you edit the data for that chart in Office Excel, but the data is saved within the PowerPoint file. Layout: Photo with Headline Color Scheme: 1 (page 22) Layout: Photo with Headline Color Scheme: 1 (page 22) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 23

Illustrative charts Illustrative charts or graphics reinforce the message you are communicating and aid in describing complex concepts. Custom illustrations must reflect the Herman Miller approved illustration style. Clip art and cartoons should not be used. Layout: Photo with Headline Color Scheme: 3 (page 22) Layout: Photo with Headline Color Scheme: 1 (page 22) February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 24

Best practices Things to pay attention to: A list of one-line statements should be consistent; if one is a complete sentence with subject and verb, they should all be and have end punctuation; if one is a phrase, they should all be, and not have end punctuation. If your statement has more than one sentence, don t use double-hard returns after punctuation. Balance your line length. Limit the use of all caps. Use Herman Miller proprietary images whenever possible. Avoid the use of clip art and stock photography. The white space at the top of the template is provided to create visual balance and is key for a strong composition. Don t add additional imagery or copy in this space. Avoid animations, transitions, and sound effects. February 2012 2012 Herman Miller, Inc. 25
