1Associate of Science in Architectural Architectural Studies Studies

Practising architects are invited to give seminars on their projects Presentation models of final year project Students Capability You will find that graduates of this programme are proactive and independent, combining problem-solving skills and technical knowledge with aesthetic architectural appreciation. Our programme includes a range of courses covering the various disciplines of the construction industry, to enable our students to understand the broader picture. On graduation, they work with architects and other professionals in the construction industry, mainly taking up roles assisting the architects in technical aspects. They are employed in a variety of offices, such as architectural practices, construction companies and building-related government departments. Their job titles include architectural technician, project co-ordinator, architectural assistant, assistant project manager and technical officer. Our students possess the following knowledge and skills: Technical skills computer-aided drafting, 3D modeling, rendering and animation, and computer presentation skills Construction technology the selection of construction systems, building materials, structural systems, building services systems Architectural knowledge building regulations, architectural detailing, contract administration, site management, architectural concepts and design principles 6

External Examiner s Comments Mr Patrick LAU, SBS Past President of Hong Kong Institute of Architects Retired Professor, Department of Architecture, University of Hong Kong As I mentioned in the foreword to the Programme s A Decade of Excellence, Architectural Studies in higher diploma or today s associate degree level is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The training and curriculum bridge the gap between architectural design and production, and provide a large number of qualified technologists for the building industry in Hong Kong. Having served as the external examiner of this programme for years, I have seen healthy progress and hard work from both the devoted academic staff and the students in pursuing quality education, and contributing towards the technical and technological aspects of architecture. Associate of Science in Architectural Studies AScAS Comments from Judge of the BuiltExpo Mr Hermann FONG Chairman, British Institute of Architectural Technologists (Hong Kong Centre) As one of the Panel judges during the past three years, I found the students to be well trained in the technical aspects of building design. Their final year projects illustrate their building knowledge, design abilities, manual and computer-aided drafting skills, and in particular, their presentation skills. They have also had the opportunity to appreciate the importance of teamwork in completing a project. 7

Feedback from our Graduates Mr Carlos Chung Yue LAU Graduate of 1993, Project Architect at Andrew Lee King Fun & Associates... a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ~ Matthew 7:24 My time at CityU helped me build a strong foundation for my further studies and my career. I gained a comprehensive understanding of the rules to be followed in design. Instead of restricting my imagination, these rules let me experience real freedom in my work. All these add up to a good solid basis for my career development. Ms Rosa CHAN Graduate of 1998, First Class Honours, Bachelor of Architectural Studies, University of Greenwich, UK What Employers Say Whilst at CityU, I gained loads of knowledge. The programme covers almost every aspect of the industry, which I found very useful in architectural practice. We did a lot of presentations in the programme, which helped to build my communication skills and self-confidence. It also gave me opportunities to challenge my thinking, stretch my limits, and help me orient myself to reach higher ground. After completing this programme, I went on to study abroad and continue my pursuit of further knowledge and architectural excellence. Your graduates demonstrate that your programme has trained architectural technicians who fulfill the industry s demand, particularly in assisting architects in delivering their services to clients. They fit into design and administration teams, including the Mainland China project team, quickly. P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd. We especially appreciate the graduates enthusiasm and high-level technical competence, which undoubtedly can be gained only through rigorous laboratory work and hands-on training. Andrew Lee King Fun & Associates 8 The graduates are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to take up tasks assigned to them quickly. The programme has provided balanced training in both the theoretical and practical aspects of building production. The students possess good computer-aided drafting, communication and other presentation skills. AGC Design Ltd.

Professional Recognition One of the most important differences between ours and other similar programmes is that our programme is fully accredited by the British Institute of Architectural Technologists (BIAT). Our graduates are eligible to apply for full membership of the BIAT upon successful completion of one year s post-qualification work experience, followed by a further two years to complete the Institute s Practice Qualification Log Book, which leads to the Assessment Interview. Our academic staff possess higher academic qualifications and substantial professional experience in building projects covering architectural and interior design, urban design, contract administration, and project co-ordination. Some are attached to architectural consultancies to keep abreast with the industry s practices, while others have won awards in design competitions, are authors of published journals and books, and are active members of the HKIA and BIAT. Associate of Science in Architectural Studies AScAS Articulation We have established links and relationships with a number of overseas universities, such as University of Nottingham (UK), University of Greenwich (UK), University of Portsmouth (UK), University of Melbourne (Australia), University of New South Wales (Australia), to name just a few. Some of our graduates choose to complete their first degree in Hong Kong through our top-up degree programme (Bachelor in Built Environment) with the Queensland University of Technology (Australia). Successful graduates are able to further their studies in other Masters programmes. Some of our graduates decide to pursue further academic study in various building-related fields, such as surveying, construction management, landscape architecture and real estate. Others who have a strong interest in architecture have gone on to become registered architects and chartered professionals in the construction industry. 9

Out-of-Classroom Activities We believe not only in the transfer of technical knowledge and skills to meet current industry needs, but also in maximizing students learning through both classroom and out-of-classroom activities. Many of our activities are in line with the Whole Person Development Award Scheme organised by the City University, which fosters students development in the spiritual, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, career and emotional areas. Throughout their CityU life, our students are strongly encouraged to initiate, organise and participate in a variety of activities. These include: Practical Training Six to eight weeks practical training under guided supervision in local or overseas building-related companies. We believe this is a valuable aid in developing a mature and independent perspective. 10 Orientation Camp, Mentoring Scheme and Student Retreat To help students get acquainted and adjust to university life, and to reflect on their own character and needs, and plan for the future. Study Tour and Student Exchange First-hand experience of architectural classics such as Beijing Commune Project and Germany s Postdamer Platz, Students are exchanged to attend classes in Singapore. BuiltExpo An opportunity to put theory into practice, and integrate technical knowledge and skills into student s final year projects, demonstrating to potential employers and the public that they are well prepared for their career. Tasks involve design and planning, case studies of structural Study Tour to Beijing Commune Project and building services systems, production of building submission plans, detailed design drawings, computer presentation drawings and models. Community Services Include participating in the World Day of Architecture, visits to elderly homes and design competitions for school, all of which encourage students to be responsible members of society. Architectural Seminars, Trade Talks and Site Visits Practicing architects and professors share their building or research projects. In 2003, seminars were organized with the theme Environment and Energy. Students learn about building products and trade practices from suppliers and contractors, and observe the lastest building products and trade practices from suppliers and contractors, and knowing the latest architectural technologies applied on real construction sites.
