Business Ledgers Collection, 1723-1909 Ledgers, Account Books, and Day Books MSS: # 013 Processed by: Christopher Lewis, April 2013 Volume: 149 Bound Ledgers Abstract: Provenance: Conservation: Copyright: The Business Ledger Collection contains ledgers, account books, day books and other miscellaneous business ledgers concerning companies and notable businessmen from the town of Beverly and the surrounding communities. All of the ledgers date from 1723-1909. The Business Ledgers Collection is a number of ledgers, account, and day books, many of which of were donated to the Beverly Historical Society from the Estate of Robert Rantoul Endicott in 1915. All items are placed in acid-free folders. Request for permission to publish material from the collection must be submitted in writing to the Curator of Collections in the Cabot House of the Beverly Historical Society & Museum.

Historical Sketch: This collection features many ledgers, account, and day books that feature notable business individuals and companies that defined Beverly and the Massachusetts North Shore. These records span from the Colonial period until the beginning of the 20 th century. The earliest dated ledger was compiled in 1723 and the latest item dates to 1909. Thus, the collection is broad in its chronological scope. This collection features ledgers that document the work of prominent businesses and individuals including Dr. Ingalls Kittredge and Beverly businessman Robert Rantoul Endicott. One of the highlights of this collection is the Beverly Marine Insurance Company material. Most of the ledgers content focuses on the daily account and expenditures of the business or individual that the ledgers document. The following are some background details of some of the individuals documented in this collection: Several ledgers in the collection are from the work of Robert Rantoul Endicott. He was born in 1823 and became both a politician and a businessman. His titles include his position as state representative and a member of the board of selectman. He served as the president of the Savings Bank; director of the Beverly National Bank; and president of the Beverly Board of Trade. Solon Lovett is another businessman who owned a shoe factory which supplied shoe manufacturers both locally and throughout New England. Charles Pickett served on the town water board as the Superintendent of the Beverly water supply. The Honorable John I. Baker was an individual who was heavily involved in the town affairs of Beverly. He served as Town Clerk from 1836-1856, with many of those years also being a member of the board of selectman. He later became the first mayor of Beverly. Lieutenant Colonel C. L. Dodge served in the Eighth Regiment during the Civil War and later was elected to the state legislature in the House of Representatives. Horace P. Woodbury was the oldest established grocer in the town of Beverly for many years and was a long-time member of the chamber of commerce. Scope and Content: This collection contains a variety of business records including account book, ledgers and day books. The total number of manuals in the collection is one-hundred and forty-nine. The collection is split into three series based on the type of volume. Since the two main types of volumes in this collection are Ledgers and Account Books, those are the names of the first two series respectively. The third series is a compilation of the remaining volumes including day books, diaries, journals, indexes and genealogies. Under each series, each item has its own line listing.

Processor s Note: The materials are stored in the vault where each manual is wrapped in card stock and some were additionally wrapped in rubber bands or twine. They are organized on shelves by letter and number. They are not at all arranged chronologically or by subject. Many of the ledgers are dated, and there are several where a date is not listed. Several of the ledgers are in various degrees of disrepair where the pages are very brittle and the bindings have disintegrated or started to rot. There are three series based on the general types of ledgers found in the collection. Each ledger has its own line entry under the appropriate series heading.
