15-1108.fm Page 1 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM Cat. No. 15-1108A TV FM Antenna Mounted Signal Amplifier This amplifier provides up to 26 db amplification of signals from outdoor VHF, UHF, FM or combination antennas. This high degree of amplification is necessary when your antenna is 100 feet or more from the TV, or when a single antenna supplies signals to several units TVs, VCRs, or FM receivers. The amplifier also helps pull in signals from weak or distant stations. Note: This unit only amplifies signals; it does not enhance distorted or noisy signals. FEATURES Separate Antenna and House Units maximize operational efficiency. Built-In Adjustable Gain Control reduces signals by up to 10 db to prevent overload, and allow custom matching of amplification to signal strength. Special Automatic Protection Circuit guards against cable shorts and prevents damage to connected receivers. Surface-Mounted Components assure long-term reliability. Please read all of the instructions and warnings contained in this Owner s Manual, in the supplied Safety Instructions sheet, and on the product. Warning: To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose this amplifier to rain or moisture. CAUTION RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK. DO NOT OPEN. CAUTION: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT REMOVE COVER OR BACK. NO USER-SERVICE- ABLE PARTS INSIDE. REFER SERVIC- ING TO QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.! Switchable FM Trap reduces or eliminates FM interference, which appears as a herringbone pattern on the TV screen. Power Indicator lights when the amplifier is operating, and goes out if power fails or the connecting cable shorts. Sonic-Welded Weather Resistant Enclosure lengthens product life.! This symbol is intended to alert you to the presence of uninsulated dangerous voltage within the product s enclosure that might be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric shock. Do not open the product s case. This symbol is intended to inform you that important operating and maintenance instructions are included in the literature accompanying this product. 1997 Tandy Corporation. All Rights Reserved. 15-1108.fm Page 2 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM INSTALLATION Antenna Unit Caution: For outdoor antennas, always install an antenna grounding system as shown in the supplied Safety Instructions. The antenna unit mounting clamp is supplied with two pair of inserts. For a RadioShack antenna with a 1-inch boom, use the clamp by itself. For other antennas, use either the round or square insert appropriate for your antenna installation. Push the insert into the small hole in the clamps. Nut Clamp Screw Boom Antenna Unit Follow these steps to install the antenna unit: 1. Place the clamp around the boom and insert the clamp screw through the hole in the clamp. Start the nut on the screw. 2. To prevent water leakage, insert the antenna unit in the clamp with the F-connector s holes facing down. Tighten the screw to secure the antenna unit and the clamp in place. Do not overtighten the screw. Caution: If the antenna is mounted on or near a chimney, position the antenna unit so it is not directly over the flue. 3. Connect the 300-ohm flat lead from the antenna unit to the antenna s screw terminals. Follow the directions provided with your antenna to verify the proper terminals. Note: To assure full protection against the effects of weather, you can apply a coating of Rubber Sealant (Cat. No. 64-2314) to the antenna connections. Use Connector Sealant Tape (Cat. No. 278-1645) to protect all exterior coaxial connectors. 2

15-1108.fm Page 3 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM 4. Choose a length of cable long enough to reach from the antenna to your TV or receiver. RadioShack stores have various precut lengths of cable with boots and connectors attached. If you choose to assemble your own coaxial cable, use the supplied weatherboot at the antenna unit connection. Attach one end of a 75-ohm coaxial cable to the F-connector of the antenna unit. Note: Do not splice the cable or install any in-line devices, such as splitters or filters. You can install a Grounding Block (Cat. No. 15-909), which passes DC current and provides a connection point for a static discharge ground rod. 5. Use either standoffs or weatherresistant electrical tape to secure the cable to the antenna mast. Use standoffs to secure the cable to the building as you bring the cable to your TV. Notes: If you use a power rotator on your antenna, be sure to leave enough cable slack for unrestricted rotation of the upper section. Allow a slight amount of slack (called a drip loop) where the cable enters your house. Be sure to weatherproof all connections, using plastic electrical tape or a coaxial sealant. House Unit Note: This amplifier is intended for indoor use only. 1. Select a location for the house unit near the TV or FM receiver and close to a standard AC outlet. 2. Attach the unit to a wall or baseboard, using the provided mounting screw. Do not mount it to any electrical equipment or your TV set or FM receiver. 3. Connect the coaxial cable from the antenna unit to the FROM AMPLI- FIER terminal on the house unit. Do not overtighten the connector. 4. Connect one end of a short length of cable to the TO TV terminal of the house unit. 3

15-1108.fm Page 4 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM To Antenna TV (75 ohm VHF/ 300 ohm UHF) VHF UHF 15-1252 Drip Loop 300 ohm FM Receiver 5. Connect the other end of that cable to the receiving unit(s). For connection to a single unit with a 75-ohm input, connect the cable directly to the input. For connection to a single unit with a 300-ohm input, use a 75- to-300 ohm transformer, such as Cat. No. 15-1140. For connections to UHF/VHF TV terminals and an FM receiver, use a VHF/UHF/FM splitter, such as Cat. No. 15-1252. Caution: Be sure not to reverse the TO TV and the FROM AMP connections. Non-hazardous, low voltage is present from the FROM AMP terminal of the house unit, which might damage an improperly connected receiver. 6. When all connections are made and double-checked, plug the house unit s power cord into a standard AC outlet. 4

15-1108.fm Page 5 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM Multiple TV Connections The house unit s output, labeled TO TV, can supply a signal to more than one TV. Connect a Four-Set Hybrid Splitter (Cat. No. 15-1142) to TO TV and follow the splitter s owner s manual to make the connections to more than one audio/video device. OPERATION FM Trap If the TV picture contains wavy or herringbone-patterned dark lines, set FM TRAP to IN to reduce or eliminate this interference. If you have the amplifier connected to an FM radio and a TV, set FM TRAP to OUT when you listen to the radio. If the FM trap has no effect on the TV picture, the source can be from other types of interference. You might need additional filters or traps. Gain Control If your TV receives too strong a signal, the picture tears and becomes unstable. Also, FM sound can become distorted. Use a Phillips screwdriver to adjust GAIN to provide the maximum signal amplification without overload. Turn GAIN toward MAX for weak or distant stations. Turn GAIN toward MIN for nearby or strong stations. Automatic Protection Circuit The amplifier contains circuitry to guard against damage caused by a short in the cable from the antenna to the TV set. A short between the antenna and house units causes the amplfier to shut down automatically, turning off the power indicator. If you locate a short, follow these steps to correct it: 1. Unplug the power cord and disconnect the shorted coaxial cable. 2. Wait 10 minutes for the unit to reset. Repair or replace the cable. 3. With the cable disconnected, plug in the house unit. 4. If the power indicator lights, unplug the unit, re-connect the cable, and plug in the power cord again. If the situation persists, take the unit to your local RadioShack store for service. TROUBLESHOOTING If you have poor FM radio reception, be sure FM TRAP is set to OUT. If the reception is poor on all units connected to the amplifier: Be sure the house unit is plugged into a live AC outlet. Check all connections between the antenna, the antenna unit, and the house unit. 5

15-1108.fm Page 6 Thursday, July 15, 1999 10:31 AM If you have poor or no reception on only one unit of a multiple receiver system connected to the house unit: Check all F-connectors for damage, especially to the center pins. Be sure the F-connectors are properly attached. Verify that the TV or FM receiver operates properly when used with other signal sources.
