Şükrü Hanioğlu Summary: My dissertation is the first comprehensive study of Ottoman economic thought within the context of modernization in the Hamidian period (1876-1908) of the late Ottoman Empire. It focuses on the contesting approaches to the question of economic development which shaped the Ottoman modernization project in this era. It also investigates the impact of modern economic ideas on Ottoman society through mass media and popular works of fiction. Based on a broad array of primary sources from textbooks and manuals of economics to memoirs and popular fiction, my dissertation reveals the economic ideology which marked Ottoman modernity of the late nineteenth century. - The Teaching Transcript Program,, December 2011 (expected) A pedagogical training program to enhance and document effective teaching skills.
