Technical Details International Protection (IP) Ratings The protection type of an enclosure is designated as per DIN EN 60529 / IEC 529 (International Electro technical Commission) by a two-digit IP (International Protection) number that indicates the protection level of the enclosure against the penetration of solid objects, dust and water. A typical IP number for weatherproof enclosures is, for example, IP65 1 ). IP 1st Digit: Protection against the penetration of foreign objects IP 2nd Digit: Protection against the penetration of water 0 Not protected 0 Not protected 1 Protected against the penetration of solid objects with a diameter greater than 50 mm 2 Protected against the penetration of solid objects with a diameter greater than 12 mm 3 Protected against the penetration of solid objects with a diameter greater than 2,5 mm 4 Protected against the penetration of solid objects with a diameter greater than 1,0 mm 5 Protected against reaching dangerous parts with a wire, protected against dust accumulation 6 Protected against reaching dangerous parts with a wire, protected against dust penetration 1 Protected against the penetration of vertically falling drops of water 2 Protected against drops of water falling at an angle of up to 15º from the vertical 3 Protected against drops of water falling at an angle of up to 60º from the vertical 4 Protected against water splashes from all directions 5 Protected against water jets from all directions 6 Protected against strong water jets and temporary flooding 7 Protected against temporary submersion in water 8 Protected against permanent submersion in water 1 ) If an IP protection level is not specified for one of the two categories, then the letter X is used instead of the respective digit, e.g., IPX4.

Designation of Explosion-Proof Equipment The designation of devices and protection systems when put to their intended use in potentially explosive areas is determined according to the requirements of EC Directive 94/9/EC.
