National Sample Census of Agriculture Nepal 2011/12 Rolpa Government of Nepal National Planning Commission Secretariat Central Bureau of Statistics Kathmandu, Nepal December 2013

AREA CONVERSION 1 Hectare = 19.657178 ropanis = 1.476569 bighas = 78.628715 matomuris = 2.471065 acres Area less than 0.1 ha is not shown in tables ROUNDING OF FIGURES Some figures have been rounded off to the nearest final digit. This may result in a slight discrepancy between the sum of the individual item and the total as shown in the table. Sufficiently precise estimates have been obtained for major characteristics covered in the census. However, due to the inherent properties of the sampling, the same cannot be said for those items which are either minor or location specific in the district. II

Preface The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) in Nepal participates in the World Census of Agriculture as advocated by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) for its member nations every ten years. The Census of Agriculture is conducted to measure actual agricultural conditions, particularly the structural aspects, of agriculture in the country. This report primarily represents the findings of the Census of Agriculture conducted in Fiscal Year 2011/2012. This is the sixth decennial Census of Agriculture undertaken by Nepal. This report consists of two main sections. The first section consists of 32 statistical tables for each of the districts based on the census data. The second section provides information about methodology; definitions about various variables of the census, quality control, interpretation of data and dissemination of census data. For those interested to know the sampling strategy adopted in the Census of Agriculture, it would be worthwhile to mention here that the sampling frame used is derived from the household schedule of the National Population and Housing Census 2011 which contains information about the of agricultural land and livestock. The livestock population can thus be considered as a total count as it was taken along with the National Population and Housing Census. For the first time, the agricultural census of Nepal introduced community level questions and also collected data on the production of the major crops. I am thankful to Mr. Suman Aryal, Deputy Director General of the CBS for his overall guidance and management of the census. Mr. Ambika Bashyal and Mr.Birendra Kumar Kayastha, Directors of the section deserve special thanks for their prime role in the overall census processes. I would like to thank Director Mr. Badri Kumar Karki and Mr. Jay Kumar Sharma and Statistical Officers Mr. Prithivi Bijaya Raj Sijapati, Mr. Kishor K C, Mr. Ganesh Phuyal, Mr. Govinda Dhungana, Mr. Kapil Dhital and also, Mr. Lila Nath Pandey, Mr. Dol Narayan Shrestha, Mr. Raju Pokharel Computer Officers. Similarly, the team of all the district agriculture census offices deserves thanks for their contribution in the fieldwork of the census operation. I also thank the then Deputy Director General Prabodh Sagar Dhakal for his hard work and dedication in the planning and fieldwork of the census. Special thanks go to all respondent households of Nepal for providing information to the field staff of the bureau. Without their generous support, this census would not have been conducted efficiently. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Hon'ble Vice Chairman, Member Secretary of the National Planning Commission and also to other members of the Steering Committee, Technical Committee and all other well-wishers whose guidance and suggestions helped to make this census a grand success. I hope that the results will be useful for planners, policy makers, administrators, researchers, students, experts and other users. Bikash Bista January 27, 2014 Director General, Central Bureau of Statistics III
