TOUR REPORT BIRD BANDING WORKSHOP October 5-13, 2000 Leader: David Ascanio E. This list contains all the birds, mammals and reptiles seen in the 2000 Bird Banding Workshop. Los s proved to be an important stop-over for passerines and shorebirds while in Henri we witnessed local and large distance migrations. One day in Los s we were able to see concentrations of 20-30 passerines flying over the sea in direction to the south, althrough the most impressive experience happens on our first morning in when in a clouded morning we did report more than 3000 individuals migrating including Northern waterthrushes, Blackpoll warblers and even a Connecticut Warbler. Besides the study of habitats and microhabitats, in the banding station we discern about the relationship between age and plumage of many species of birds including the relation between the undertail coverts with the age of some species of hummingbirds, the wing coverts determinating age in some species of swift and the primary feathers determinating age of Olive-striped Flycatcher. We also measured the wing, tail (rectrices), tarsus and bill of every indivudal banded while other times we were working in the weight or the molting conditions. For every migrant, fat was observed and every 30 minutes wheater conditions were annotated. In we were focused on understanding the banding operation while in Los s we focused on Island Biogegography and discussed the presence of local species as well as reported interesting feeding behavior of some migrant species. We also visited the museum and understood the importance of specimens for science. The have been known to science for more than four decades but is recently when the amount of information available is letting scientist to determinate the functions and importance of as a tool to protect such a rich and diverse avifauna. I'm sure I will see you again in the neotropics, maybe in the wet forest of Peru, in the Puna of Ecuador or in the Guayanan Shield of Venezuela! The second indicates the regions where it was reported according to the abreviations used below, and the third column indicates detailed or interesting information about the species. Whenever a given species have been seen and heard, the descriptive conditions are mentioned in the third column. Please note that this report follows mostly the nomenclature of De Schauensee and Phelps in "A Guide to the Birds of Venezuela" with few up-dates from Ridgely & Tudor "The Birds of South America". When there is a new English name for a given species, the previous one will be writen into brackets. The common names in italic mean recent splits or discoveries within the boundaries of Venezuela.
