Two T1s are used with a YI cable, and two T3s are used with a YO cable attached to a paired adapter. Two T2s and two T3s are used with a paired set of two adapters or dual adapters. In mode 2 or mode 4, four ports will be used -- two T2s and two T3s in order to access all SAS bays. An EXP24S in mode 4 can be attached to two or four SAS controllers and provide a great deal of configuration flexibility. For example, if using unpaired feature 5901 IBM United States Hardware Announcement 111-065 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 3
adapters, these 5901 adapters could be in the same server in the same partition, same server in different partitions, or even different servers. An EXP24S in mode 2 has similar flexibility. Up to 24 HDDs can be supported with any of the supported SAS adapters/ controllers. The EXP24S (#5887) has many high reliability design points. The SAS bays support hot swap. It has redundant and hot-swap power/fan assemblies. It has dual line cords. It has redundant and hot-swap ESM (Electronic Service Modules). It has redundant data paths to all drives. LED indicators on drives, bays, ESM, and power supplies support problem identification. Plus through the SAS adapters/controllers, drives can be protected with RAID and mirroring and hot spare capability. The EXP24S has a fixed length set of rails that allows it to fit in standard Power Systems 19-inch racks such as the 7014-T42 or T00 or the feature 0551 or 0553. 177 GB SFF SSD with emlc (#1775 and #1787): The new SAS SFF 177 GB SSD with emlc provides about 2.5 times more gigabytes per SAS bay as compared to the existing SAS-bay-based SLC TM 69 GB SSD option. This new 177 GB emlc SAS-bay-based option uses very similar technology to the PCIe-based 177 GB emlc introduced late in 2010. SSD or flash technology can provide 33 to 125 times more I/O operations per second (IOPS) compared to spinning disk drives (HDD) and can, therefore, slash I/O-bound batch window times, improve interactive or query response time, and even make previously performanceimpractical applications work well. emlc technology stands for Enterprise Multi-Level Cell Flash memory technology. It blends enterprise-class performance and reliability characteristics with the more cost-effective characteristics of MLC Flash storage. Using advances in the SSD device controller Flash memory management in concert with advances in MLC technology, IBM provides substantially better cost per gigabyte or cost per SAS bay. More impressively, emlc does this while continuing to provide great sustained performance levels with extended endurance/reliability. These IBM emlc SSDs were designed to provide 24x7x365 usage while continuously running write-intensive workloads for at least five years. Typical client usage is expected to be much lower, especially regarding the average percentage of writes, and thus drive lifespan may be much longer. The new SSD-based drives are mounted on Gen1 or SFF-1 carriers/trays and are supported in the feature 5803 12X PCIe I/O drawer on the Power 795. 571 GB / 600 GB 10k RPM SFF Disk Drive (#1790, #1916, #1962, #1964): A new 571 GB / 600 GB 10k RPM SFF disk drive is added to SFF disk drive options, offering a lower cost per gigabyte and more gigabytes per rack space. Four feature numbers are used to indicate whether this drive is formatted for AIX/Linux or IBM i and to indicate if a Gen1 or Gen2 SFF carrier/tray is used. 139 GB / 146 GB 15k RPM SAS SFF-2 Disk Drives (#1947, #1917) and 283 GB / 300 GB 10k RPM SFF-2 Disk Drives (#1956, #1925): Existing 139 GB / 146 GB 15k RPM and 283 GB / 300 GB 10k RPM SFF-2 Disk Drives are provided a second set of feature numbers to indicate when they should be mounted on a Gen2 SFF carrier/tray for use in an EXP24S I/O drawer. PCIe2 LP 2-Port 4X IB QDR Adapter 40 Gb (#5283): The PCIe Gen2 low-profile adapter provides two high-speed 4X InfiniBand connections for IP over IB usage in the Power 720 and 740. On the Power 720 and 740, this adapter is supported in PCIe Gen2 slots, which are provided in the PCIe Gen2 Riser Card (#5685). As of first half 2011, there are no other PCIe Gen2 slots available on the Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 755, 770, 780, or 795. Where Gen2 PCIe slots are not available, continue to use the 12X DDR adapter in a GX slot plus a 12X -to-4x cable for 4x InfiniBand connections. IBM United States Hardware Announcement 111-065 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 4
Five QDR IB cables are provided for attachment to the QDR adapter and its QSFP connectors. Copper cables provide 1-, 3-, and 5-meter lengths (#3287, #3288, and 3289) and optical cables provide 10- and 30-meter lengths (#3290, #3293). These are QSFP/QSFP cables that then also attach to QSFP ports on the switch. The feature 5283 QDR adapter attaches to the QLogic QDR switch. This switch is ordered from IBM using 7874-036, 7874-072, or 7874-324. Drivers to allow direct attachment to another feature 5283 QDR Adapter are not provided by IBM. Note that the feature 5283 adapter has two 40 Gb ports and a PCIe Gen2 slot has the bandwidth to support one port. So the benefit of two ports will be for additional attachment redundancy, not for additional performance. DVD/Tape SAS External Storage Unit (#5724): This 1U I/O drawer is used in the Power 795 CEC rack. It holds HH DAT160 tape drives or HH LTO5 tape drives or slimline DVD drives. In new Power 795 proposals, it replaces the use of the existing feature 5720 1U I/O drawer. 1.5 TB / 3.0 TB LTO-5 SAS Tape Drive (#5638): Additional configuration flexibility is provided for the Power 750 system unit and the Power 795 1U I/O drawer (#5724) by the addition of an Ultium5 drive. The feature 5638 drive is already available in the Power 720 and 740 system unit. 10 GbE SFP+ Active Copper cables (#EN01, #EN02, #EN03): 1 m, 3 m, or 5 m 10 Gb copper twinax Ethernet cables can now be more conveniently ordered for the copper 10 Gb IVE/HEA ports of the POWER7 servers or for the PCIe2 LP 2-port 10 GbE SFP+ Copper Adapter (#5286). Accessibility by people with disabilities A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act IBM Power Systems models are capable, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Statement of general direction IBM plans to introduce a large-cache PCIe SAS adapter in third quarter 2011 for clients with large numbers of HDDs or SSDs per adapter. It is planned to be supported on POWER7 configurations (Power 720, 740, 770, 780, 795), POWER7 750 servers with 12X PCIe I/O drawers, or on POWER6 servers with 12X PCIe I/O drawers. It is planned to support SSDs or HDDs located in feature 5802 or 5803 12X PCIe, feature 5886 EXP12S, and feature 5887 EXP24S I/O drawers. It is planned to be supported by AIX 5.3 or later, IBM i 6.1 with Virtual IO Server (VIOS), or IBM i 7.1 with or without VIOS. Support by IBM i 6.1 without VIOS is planned for fourth quarter 2011. The adapter is planned to be configured as pairs of single-wide PCIe cards, much like the existing feature 5805 or 5903 PCIe adapters. IBM Electronic Services Electronic Service Agent TM and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you. Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, refer to http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic IBM United States Hardware Announcement 111-065 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 13
The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes. Benefits Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night. Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM. The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM. More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record. Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
