ALIENWARE X51 PERFORMANCE COMPARISON: SAMSUNG SSD VS. TRADITIONAL HARD DRIVE Gamers, who demand high levels of performance from their computers, reap enormous benefits from the increased speed that solid-state drives (SSDs) can deliver. In the Principled Technologies (PT) labs, we conducted a series of performance tests on the X51 desktop, which Dell calls a one-stop gaming and entertainment system. We tested two configurations that were identical except for the storage one system had a traditional spindle hard drive and the other had a Samsung SSD. Our findings? The Samsung SSD-based X51 achieved superior performance across the board. This means that for an additional investment of only an additional $250, users could enjoy this increased performance, faster boot and shutdown times, and a dramatically improved gaming experience with the Samsung SSD. Seconds HIGH PERFORMANCE = SUPERIOR GAMING EXPERIENCE Because extremely strong performance is essential to those who use their computers to play video games, we tested two configurations of the new X51, a system designed for gaming. One was equipped with a Samsung solid-state drive and the other with a. We conducted each test three times and report the median score. For detailed system configuration information, see Appendix A. For details on how we conducted the tests, see Appendix B. WHAT WE FOUND Booting and shutting down We timed how long the two systems took to boot and shut down. As Figure 1 shows, the SSD booted 68.1 percent faster and shut down 46.3 percent faster than the HDD-based system. Figure 1: Boot and shutdown times for the two systems we tested. As Figure 2 shows, this process was 41.6 percent faster on the SSD-based X51 than on the HDD-based system. A Principled Technologies test report 2

Figures 3 and 4 show the median results of our PCMark tests. The SSD-based X51 achieved a 123.3 percent higher PCMark 7 System Storage score than the HDD-based system did. Higher numbers are better. PassMark Disk Mark storage performance The Disk Mark component of the PassMark PerformanceTest measures data transfer speed to one or more disks. As Figures 5 and 6 show, the Samsung SSD-based X51 scored 144.6 percent higher overall on PassMark DiskMark test than the HDD-based system. It also scored 71.2 percent higher on the PassMark Sequential Read test, 66.4 percent higher on the PassMark Sequential Write test, and 2,363.6 percent higher on PassMark Random Seek score. Many factors affect this speed, and the Advanced Disk Drive Test allows the user to vary most of these factors and compare the results. IN CONCLUSION The Samsung SSD delivers more speed and greater performance than the same machine with HDD storage, which for gamers means better gaming experiences. For a modest additional investment, users could avoid frustrating lag times when copying large files and when booting and shutting down their systems. APPENDIX B TEST METHODOLOGY Measuring time to boot and shut down Setting up the test Download and install the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 8 with default options from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652. Windows ADK Boot Performance Assessment (Full Boot) test 1. Boot the system and bring up an administrative command prompt: a. Type cmd b. Right-click the Command Prompt app to open App options. c. Click Run as administrator. 2. Type Cmd.exe /c start /wait Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,processidletasks 3. Do not interact with the system until the command exits. 4. After the command exits, wait 5 minutes before running the test. 5. To launch the Windows Assessment Console, click Windows Start orb All Programs Windows Kits Windows ADK Windows Assessment Console. 6. Select Run Individual Assessments, and click Boot Performance Assessment (Full Boot). 7. Click Run. 8. Record the results. 9. Shut down the computer. 10. Repeat steps 1 through 9 twice. Measuring time to copy large files Setting up the test 1. We used a 3.98 GB.MOV file for this test. 2. Copy the.mov file to the Videos directory. Running the test 1. Boot the test system. 2. Bring up an elevated command prompt: a. Select Windows Start orb. b. Type cmd and press Control-Shift-Enter. 3. Type Cmd.exe /c start /wait Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,processidletasks 4. Do not interact with the system until the command completes. 5. After the command completes, wait 5 minutes before running the test. 6. Browse to the Videos directory and right-click copy the.mov file. 7. Browse to the C: root directory. 8. Simultaneously right-click paste the.mov file into the C: root directory and start the stopwatch. 9. Stop the stopwatch when the file has finished copying. 10. Measuring system performance with Futuremark PCMark 7 Setting up the test 1. Reset the system with the appropriate test image. 2. Download the PCMark_7_v104_installer.exe Windows package from www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/pcmarkvantage/download/. 3. Install PCMark 7 1.0.4 with the default options by double-clicking the PCMark_7_v104_installer.exe file. 4. Launch PCMark 7 1.0.4 by clicking on the PCMark 7 desktop icon. Enter the registration code, click Register, and click OK. 5. Exit PCMark 7 1.0.4. Running the test 1. Reboot the system. 2. Double-click the PCMark 7 desktop icon to launch the benchmark. 3. Select all test suites. 4. Click Run Benchmark. 5. When the benchmark run completes take a screenshot of the results, and record them as follows: PCMark Score Lightweight Score Creativity Score Entertainment Score Computation Score System Storage Score 6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 two more times, and report the median of the three runs. Measuring hard disk performance with PassMark PerformanceTest 8 Setting up the test 1. Download PassMark PerformanceTest Professional 8.0 from http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm. 2. Double-click petst.exe to run setup. 3. At the Welcome screen, click Next. 4. Accept the license agreement, and click Next. 5. At the Choose Install Location screen, accept the default location of C:\Program Files\PerformanceTest, and click Next. 6. At the Select Start Menu Folder screen, click Next. 7. At the Ready to Install screen, click Install. 8. At the Completing the PerformanceTest Setup Wizard screen, deselect View Readme.txt, and click Finish to launch PerformanceTest. 9. At the Purchasing information screen, copy and paste the Username and key, and click Continue. 10. At the Key accepted screen, click OK. Running the test 1. ALL PERSONS OR ENTITIES RELYING ON THE RESULTS OF ANY TESTING DO SO AT THEIR OWN RISK, AND AGREE THAT PRINCIPLED TECHNOLOGIES, INC., ITS EMPLOYEES AND ITS SUBCONTRACTORS SHALL HAVE NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FROM ANY CLAIM OF LOSS OR DAMAGE ON ACCOUNT OF ANY ALLEGED ERROR OR DEFECT IN ANY TESTING PROCEDURE OR RESULT. IN NO EVENT SHALL PRINCIPLED TECHNOLOGIES, INC. BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES IN CONNECTION WITH ITS TESTING, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
