S235 from the shelves
S235 from the shelves Steel grade S235 from shelves Target groups What is it? Arguments Compared with rebar steel Sample modern steel projects Conclusions Questions / discussion
S235 from the shelves We're not crazy! Why use lower steelsgrades as the prices are similar
Target groups Steelsuppliers Teachers Structural Engineers
What are the drivers Cultural change in the use of steel Focus on the use of the steels S355 and S460 Steel grade S235/S275 eliminate from the market Cost reduction Material reduction Sustainabilty
Arguments S235 / S460 are ordinary steels. high-strength steels are S690 to S1100. Other material composition and welding instructions. S235, S275, S355 and S460 have the exact same alloy composition, only the rolling and cooling are different. Therefore, the cost per tonne is almost equal.
Arguments When using steel grade S460 vs. S235 and S355, the cost of the entire steel structure bearing by: less consumption of material steel Less weld volumes lighter assembly lighter steel transportation crane deployment and support structures lighter foundation less burden on the environment upcycling and reuse profiles.
Arguments Steel is a modern material that develops
Arguments It is to good to be true Steel grades Costs Strength Weight Tracebility Stiffness Weldability S235 100 100 100 not 100 good S275 101 120 85 must 100 good S355 102 150 70 must 100 good S460 102 200 50 must 100 good
Arguments The majority of steel structures columns (pressure bars) beams (beams in bending truss (tension and compression members) Variant compared with those in S235 S460: weight reduction 30 to 45% Variant compared with those in S355 S460: weight reduction 15 to 20% Considerations in steels S355 and S460: Traceability EN 1090 stiffness weldability
Compared with rebars in concrete The concrete world is more innovative than the steel business? Evolution of reinforcing steel in the past 60 years of FeB 220 FeB 400 FeB 500 Rebar Yield stress Application Comparable FeB 220 190 N/mm² no S235 FeB 400 350 N/mm² no S355 FeB 500 435 N/mm² Standard S460
Examples in high strengh steel Modern structures ask for sustainable Eye: S355 Stedelijk museum: S355 Central station CS: S355 Stadskantoor: S460
www.dutchhall.nl Optimise embodied energy High strength steel: 51% less 30
Conclusions 1. Cheaper, more durable and also more slender steel structures can: Use standard S355 and S460 as possible. 2. Message to Designers: replace now S235 and S275 to S355 and S460. 3. Introduce steel S355 as the new standard, is the intermediate step S460 as the future standard. 4. The structural engineer is the decisive factor. 5. In bridge design S355 and S460 are already standard steels. 6. More knowledge, more applications in S460, a product that is competitive with concrete.

Manufacturing in China including Shanghai Transportation Europe via Suez Canal is competitive cost ( ), partly due to own means of transport: ZPMC, 26 Zhen Hua vessels. CO2 emissions due to transportation is not (yet) included in the award. Is defined by three parameters: Emissions per km - kgco2/km Length of the route - km Weight of the cargo - tons Emissions per charge: in kgco2/ton = kgco2/km * mileage / total charge Hardanger Bridge: 385 * 20831/8510 = 942 kgco2/ton ZHEN HUA ships usually sail back empty: Impact 2 times as big!
