History 40 years being a super champion!! Marc Verschelde from Zulte - In all honesty we can say that Marc Verschelde is born as a real champion. Through his father, Marc came already in contact with pigeons as a child. His profound knowledge and the continuous search for perfection made him one of the biggest champions in a success story that lasts already almost half of a century. That s why we came up with the idea to write an article about this successful pigeon career starting from middle distance to the very long distance. * Looking into a pile of old newspapers!! While looking into the pile of old newspapers before us, we could find a lot of interesting information that helped us to make this piece of art. Already before the sixties Marc was a fancier helping out his father. In 1964 Marc really started his own career. His first two breeders came from Gustaaf Turpijn from Kortrijk out of the famous Kleinen and a late female of 1963. The offspring of this breeding couple was satisfying and the loft was rebuilt to keep more pigeons. End of 1965 some additional late youngsters from G. Turpijn came on the breeding loft and 1966 was the official start of the Verschelde loft. The start was directly a success. After the season 1966 Marc went with Gustaaf Turpijn to Jozef Lietaert from Rumbeke as Turpijn s pigeons were originating from this loft. Being a young fancier Marc got a 2 years old female, the Rapid and three late youngsters. To succeed in the longer distances he got from Goerlandt-Vandeputte another 2 late youngsters.. Together they became the parents of the Limoges 67 who won the 224th Argenton out of 1954p the 208th Limoges out of 6135 the 15th Limoges of 3046 pigeons. Resulting from the successes with the Lietaert pigeons, in 1968 additional late youngsters were bought and put directly on the breeding loft. Lietaert s pigeons were originating from Desmet-Matthijs and one of the late youngsters was the Rik - a son of the Oude Rik Desmet-Matthys and became basic pigeon nr 1 on the loft of Marc Verschelde. Marc said the following about Jozef Lietaert from Rumbeke : From 1969 onwards this man came to couple my breeders just until 1989 the year he became ill. I owe him a lot especially relating to the coupling and the way of playing. A great future champion From a report of the championships of the union De Werkman Waregem from 1969 we can read the following: Marc Verschelde a great future champion : 2nd Champion old and 1st champion youngsters and 1st General Champion against competitors as Julien Matthys-Vichte, Etienne Ollevier-Wervik, Desmet-Matthys Nokere Norbert Norman Oostrozebeke, Gebrs Denys Gistel, Camiel Devos Vlissegem, In the same article with header Champions are speaking! we could also read the following: The youth is the future and we are happy that such a young fancier has become the general champion. Before becoming a fancier he was convinced not only to make a solid strain but also to maintain his pigeons for 100% during winter and summer thereby assisted by his wife. * Always looking for reinforcement! In 1972 pigeons of the superb loft Lefebre-Dhaenens reinforced the breeding loft of

Marc. The years afterwards also pigeons of Baudoncq-Van Praet, Gerard Tytgat, J. Dierickx & Zn all from Zulte, M.& J. Vandenbogaerde Desselgem and Arthur Ide from Machelen came to reinforce the loft Verschelde. Also pigeons from André & Jozef Verheye from Waregem, Roger Vereecke from Deerlijk, Emiel Denys from Zulte, Gaby Deleersnijder from Zulte and Sylvère Toye came on the loft. 1974 : among the interprovincial toppers A newspaper of 1974 mentions the Championships of that year in the joined championship Kortrijk-Waregem-Deinze-Otegem-Avelgem for the fanciers basketing for the Interprovinciale Entente ( 18.000 Bef in that time was a lot of money!!)... and what do we see 1st Champion Marc Verschelde as only fancier with 10 prices with 1-2-3-4 designated and against all big names of the region at that time. Another article mentions the two superstars of the loft Verschelde at that time : the Blauwen 4515800/71 (a late youngster) and the Merckx 4621114/72 (a youngster of the 3rd round of the Zwarten Lefebre-Dhaenens with Dochter Spook J. Lietaert ). About the Merckx we can read in the article that Marc says: Look at his palmares and think that he never came out of the good direction, nevertheless he is a real strong pigeon that can fly really hard. The Merckx flew 32nd Poitiers on 2027 d 14th Blois on 852d 18th Poitiers on 479d 25th Poitiers 877d 11th Blois 311d 2nd Argenton 583d.and reached 22 prices in 3 years he never missed a single price in his whole career! * In 1975 at the top again! We are going to 1975 and before us we can read the following story: Derby Orléans winner on the loft of Marc Verschelde in Zulte! Let s take a quote out of the article The first Gents Derby 1975 from Orleans yearlings is won by the young champion Marc Verschelde.with around 6 minutes ahead his first designated : the Witpen 4534808/74. As youngster trained to Survilliers and as yearling he won Clermont 27th on 252d Clermont 32th on 1455d -12th Dourdan 493d 11th Dourdan 366d and 1st Derby Orléans. Also in 75 Marc won the Coupe Robert Sion with 1st designated pigeon on 7 long distance races with 7 on 7. * In 76 & 77 & 78 only Verschelde! We found a lot of articles from 1976 and 1977... 2 seasons really dominated by Marc Verschelde In 76 he was 1st Champion old and 2nd Champion youngsters in the region Kortrijk-Waregem-Deinze-Otegem-Avelgem on the flights of the Interprovincial Entente. He also won the Criterium of Flanders at Aalter on the long middle distance races, won the Price Fondclub Knokke on the at that time very famous Tours Knokke and was in various unions 1st or 2nd champion. Relating to 1979 we did not found anything but we are sure that results were in same line as previous years? That s why my wife always takes care of the clocks so that i can spend time on the lofts.. * In 82.splendid transition to the national long distance scene!! In 1982 Het Volk has a column named De Duivenspiegel where an article says : The Poitiers of Verschelde at his best! It was about the Poitiers 4076197/81 who just won the interprovincial Poitiers on 3187 yearlings. His father was a son of the Oude Rik (as last youngster of the Klaren of Desmet-Matthys) with the Zwart Gesch. van 76 : (origine J. Lietaert- Rumbeke: origine Vander Espt x Hector Desmet). The Poitiers is a late youngster that was not raced during the first year. As yearling he was raced for the first time from Blois and won 56th on 1223 pigeons. In 82 Verschelde made splendid results with amongst others 11-12- 19-31-43-66 on 221 pigeons from Poitiers (6/6), 4-57-75-217.from Angoulème on 1979 pigeons and 7 on 9, Angoulème at Gent with 1-6-7 on 887 pigeons and 3 on 5, Montauban W-Vl 1276 p: 15-68-192 (3 on 3) and so on.. We also read in the article : Since Marc made the transition to the long distance races, he gets another idea on the pigeon and the taking care of it. On the long distance the quality of the pigeon counts more then the fancier. In the season 1982 Marc becomes in the Oostvlaamse Marathon 2nd Champion on 130 members. At the end of the season reinforcement is obtained from Frans Haerinck from Desselgem and from Gaby Demeulemeester - Zulte. * The pigeons of Marc Verschelde already 20 years at the top! J. Buyschaert writes in de Duivenbode of 83 an article about the great champion Verschelde titled : The pigeons of M. Verschelde write already 20 years of history. It starts with the following quote! Nowadays everybody knows M. Verschelde as a international and national long distance fancier with fame in Belgium and rest of Europe. 20 years ago nobody knew him, except as the young guy that accompanied father Omer during basketing for a short distance race. Father Omer was considered as a true short distance specialist : the king and emperor with very fast pigeons. Marc full of dynamism supported by the stubborn willingness must have thought already at that time : once I want to be a champion. He started as follows : first breeding out of quality pigeons and try to found couples that

match. * A mother out of the thousand is looking at the pigeons of M. Verschelde (Cl. Van Keymeulen) On March 20 1984 after an amazing season 1983 Clement Van Keymeulen writes in De Belgische Duivensport a splendid story titled A mother out of the thousand takes care of the pigeons of M Verschelde : The article start as this!... We are in Zulte in the Piste. The track for horses that has been used to build houses on. In number 41 lives Marc Verschelde next to the house of this parents where the 75 year old mother of Marc takes care of the pigeons of her son 365 times a year. No lack of caring thus, neither of good results. On their frontpage a few specialized pigeon magazines mentioned ; 1st Provincial Narbonne 1991 on 1165 pigeons and 3rd national on 5848 pigeons. Marc Verschelde! A clear signal that everything went smoothly for the champion from Zulte; In 91 he won the first long distance race of the season (Brive) in Fondclub Meulebeke with the Prost 4031717/98 against 301 pigeons, he is a grandchild of the Turbo : 4023373/82 who won out of Limoges 3rd national. The Prost had already 3 very special seasons and next

to the result out of Brive he also won price out of Cahors and Narbonne. The Narbonne- Vooruit 4192125/89 took the provincial victory in 91 on one of the last long distance races of the season. In 90 he won 938th national on Limoges and 96th national Narbonne 2546 pigeons. In 91 he excelled again from Narbonne with 1st provincial (15 ahead that s why the name) and 3rd national on 5848 p. His father is the 4541370/85, who is also father of other superb pigeons as the Adonis de Beer and others. he originates from the line of the Jonge Rik (Desmet-Matthys origine). In the meantime Batman is already grandfather of the Sander 4241082/04 who won a very early price from Narbonne. 98.a season with two times first provincial Poitiers and topresults on the extreme long distance races In short 1998 became another great season!! De Belgische Duivensport mentioned on its front page : Two provincial victories on Poitiers provincial and topresults on the long distance races for Marc Verschelde. The story tells us that since 96 a lot of pigeons came over from Emiel Denys and that Marc aims more and more at the very long distance and overnight races. The Ronaldo 3306142/96 for example was the first Denys product that showed his class, he won as yearling 203rd nat Narbonne on 5619 pigeons and as twoyear old from Barcelona 4th in the club on 212 pigeons and national 237th on 12678p and international 518th of 24139 pigeons. In 1998 Marc can show following results on long distance taces with Barcelona 3 on 3 (in the club 4, 57, 69 on 212p, Dax 2 out of 2. 1998 was also the year that the Pantani 3207264/97 really came up as the leader of the loft with Narbonne 1st Fondclub 162p 37th national 9104d, on this Narbonne Marc won in the club 1-4-6-10-11-18-20-28-46(18) and national on 9104 pigeons : 37-159-233-474-519-874..this all with pure Denys pigeons. 1998 was also the season that showed the Adonis as a real gifted breeder. He produced superb descendants as the Provincial, but even more 3 sons flew on 20th of juni 98 in real hard weather on Poitiers for following result : in the club on 171 pigeons 2nd -3rd en 4th, provincial on 3505 pigeons 23rd, 25th and 34th. Adonis is also father of the Bardy 4241037/95, who in 1998 already won 22 prices amongst others 29th Blois 541p 77th Chateauroux on 4036p 23rd Poitiers 3505p 60th Tours on 1968p 3rd Poitiers 2015p, and so on..
