Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Purpose As a teacher, I want to move students forward into the 21 st century learning environment. Many students already use technology to access information 24/7 and we are living in a world where information is immediate. As teachers, we must challenge students with rigorous standards set forth by the state. We must inspire and promote our students to achieve at their highest level. Many students already own personal devices that allow them to access information anytime and anywhere. I would like the opportunity for my students to use their personal devices for educational purposes. With their devices they can access apps, personal planning devices, and other educational tools maximizing the opportunity for great success in school. What Devices May Students Bring? Devices are privately owned wireless and portable electronic pieces of equipment. Devices include laptops, tablets, e-readers, i-touches, and smart phones. NO portable gaming devices are allowed, such as Nintendo DS or Playstation PSP, etc. Guidelines 1. Any student who wishes to use a personally owned electronic device must read and sign the districts acceptable use policy and my classroom policy on device use. 2. The student takes full responsibility for his or her device and keeps it with himself or herself at all times. Common Questions and Answers My student is bringing their device to school for instructional purposes. Will they have access to things the network provides? Your student will have access to the web through their device when the teacher deems necessary for instructional purposes. However, students will not have access to their student folders or printing through their own device. What if my student s device is stolen or damaged? What recourse can I take? Students bring their own device to school at their own risk, just like any other personal items brought to school. The teacher, school and the school district will not be held responsible if the electronic device or other items is lost, stolen, vandalized, damaged, or misplaced. If the electronic device or other items is lost, stolen, vandalized, damaged, or misplaced please let your teacher or administration know immediately so he/she can take the appropriate steps. Some devices have a device locator; it is recommended that you enable this feature if possible. It is also a good idea to record the device s serial number in case of theft. My student brought their device to school to use in every classroom, but some teachers said they couldn t use the device? The teacher in the classroom has the final say on procedures in the classroom. If he or she asks you not to use your device, then you should follow those directions. Access is only available, NOT guaranteed for each classroom situation. Will there be a penalty to my grade if I do not have my own device? NO. Devices are NEVER required and therefore, a grade cannot be taken. How will students be able to access the network? The network will be accessible under your setting options through the Wi-Fi connection on the device. Students will be prompted to enter their student log-in and password to access the Wi-Fi connection. Use of 3G & 4G wireless connections is not allowed. This will ensure that everything the student is working on is safe and monitored by BESS the districts filtering program.
