1 Carver Middle School Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Section I: Rationale Student and Parent User Agreement The goal for both Lake County Schools and the Carver Middle School s Bring Your Own Device program is to create a technology-rich 21 st century learning environment for our students. Through the BYOD program at Carver Middle, students will be able to apply and develop integral 21 st century skills, including written and oral communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking and digital literacy. Section II: Overview Beginning May 4, 2015, Carver Middle School will permit students to bring and use laptops, tablets, and smartphones for instructional purposes. The use of these personal electronic devices is a privilege, and students must adhere to all district policies and school procedures, including those listed below. Any violation of the following policies will result in the revocation of the student s BYOD privileges, along with the consequences mentioned below. Please be sure to initial all sections and sign pages 5 and 6. Please return only pages 5 and 6 to Carver Middle School. Section III: Definitions The term device is used to describe all electronic devices that can transmit digital media. The term technology is also used to describe all electronic devices that can transmit digital media. The term media in this document is used to signify any single medium used to communicate any data for any reason. Examples: digital photos, recorded audio, and digital and analog videos. Section IV: District Network Use of the Lake County Student BYOD wireless network is entirely at the risk of the user, and Lake County Schools is not responsible for any loss of any information that may arise from the use of the wireless connection, or for any loss, injury, or damages resulting from the use of the wireless connection. All users of the Lake County Student network are bound by the district s Acceptable Use Policy. By clicking Accept at login, you are agreeing to all of the above conditions and policies as they pertain to non-district devices. Section V: Bring Your Own Technology Policy and Procedures Guidelines Students are responsible for the security of their own devices. There will always be a risk of theft when at school. It is recommended that skins or other custom touches are used to distinguish your device from others. Personnel will not be available to investigate or troubleshoot students laptop or tablet issues. 1

2 Lake County Schools is not responsible for content downloaded or installed on a student s personal device. Students will not be required to download or install applications on personal devices. Inappropriate Language Restrictions against inappropriate language apply to public messages, private messages, and material created for assignments or to be posted on web pages. Students will not use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar, rude, inflammatory, threatening, or disrespectful language. Students will not engage in personal attacks, including prejudicial or discriminatory attacks. Students will not harass another person. Harassment is persistently acting in a manner that distresses or annoys another person. Students will not knowingly or recklessly post false or defamatory information about a person or organization. Internet Only the internet gateway provided by the school may be accessed while on campus. Personal internet connections such as but not limited to cell phones 3G/4G and cell network adapters are not permitted to be used to access outside internet sources at any time. Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement Students will not plagiarize works found on the internet or on the computers at school or home. Plagiarism is defined as taking the ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were one s own. Students will respect the rights of copyright owners. Copyright infringement occurs when one inappropriately reproduces a work that is protected by a copyright. If a work contains language that specifies appropriate use of that work, the student will follow the expressed requirements. Respecting Resource Limits Students will use the technology at school only for educational and career development activities. Students will not post chain letters or engage in spamming. Spamming is sending an unnecessary message to a large number of people. Students will not download or use games, pictures, video, music, instant messaging, , or file sharing applications, programs, executables, or anything else unless permitted by school personnel. Security and Damages Responsibility to keep the device secure rests with the individual owner. Carver Middle School is not liable for theft of devices or for damages to devices on campus. It is recommended that skins (decals) and other custom touches are used to physically identify your device from others. Additionally, protective cases for technology are strongly recommended. 2

3 Section VI: Outside the Classroom Devices should not be visible outside of the classroom, to include morning/afternoon courtyard, parent pickup/drop off areas, the gym, and the cafeteria. Outside of the classroom, students are not allowed to: Access, post or view any social media site or app Record via any medium, including but not limited to, pictures and videos Use instant messenger or texting applications Access or view a website or app with content that is inappropriate, as per the Lake County Code of Student Conduct Section VII: Consequences Any violation of the student agreement will result in the following consequences, in accordance with the Lake County Code of Student Conduct OCCURRENCE CONFISCATION LOSS OF TECHNOLOGY PRIVILEGE 1 st violation None None 2 nd violation By teacher for the remainder of class period 3 rd violation Submitted to Administration for parent pick-up 4 th violation Submitted to Administration for parent pick-up 5 th violation + Submitted to Administration for parent pick-up For class period For 24 hours (parent pick-up) For the rest of the nine-week period Subject to Administration Please note, any severe violation of the BYOD agreement may result in a higher consequence and will be handled on a case by case basis. 3

5 Section IIX: Student Responsibilities Directions: Students and parent/guardian must initial in the respective location to the left of each bullet. Student Initials Parent Initials Responsibility Will not access or display any media that is deemed inappropriate for school. For example: If you can t wear it to school on a shirt, you may not display or access it on your device. Will not use electronic devices/technology to cheat on assignments or tests. Will not use electronic devices/technology and/or media to bully, threaten, or abuse another person. Will not use electronic devices/technology to record, in any media format, another person without their knowledge. Will not use electronic devices/technology to communicate/ /instant message other students regarding non-academic topics, or topics unrelated to the content of the class. Will not use to record, transmit or post photographic images or video of a person, or persons on campus during/before/after school hours, during schoolsponsored events, or on school transportation unless instructed by personnel for academic purposes. Will bring the electronic device fully charged each day. Will not charge devices on school campus. Will use earbud headphones and keep their device in silent mode. Headphones, when permissible, will be limited to one ear. 5
