Your Day At MarketPlace Set Up Students will be dismissed from the Town Hall Meeting. This is a busy time in the shops. Volunteers need to make sure the following things are happening during this time. 1. Pass out the colored break lanyards using the colors indicated on the Shop Envelope. Lanyards must be worn at all times. 2. The Owner needs to take the Credit Union loan to the Credit Union. 3. The Accountant should start typing checks as per the Shop Envelope. The Accountant s Manual is in each shop. (see Account s page in Volunteer Manual for more instructions) 4. The Owner needs to go to the Distribution Hub to collect the first half of the merchandise. 5. The employees may begin to arrange the merchandise. 6. The Owner and employees should decide the prices for each item. There are two pricing boxes in the city. City Opens/First Shopping Break The Owner should give the green break employees their payroll check. The Owner must sign all checks except for his own. The Accountant signs the Owner s payroll checks. The green break tags should now go on break. The first stop for each employee should be the Credit Union to deposit their checks. Employees should endorse their checks on the back. The Accountant should continue to type the checks. The other two color tags employees are continuing to make the displays, talk to customers, etc. Each shopping break is 15 minutes long. The announcement will be made when each break is over. When the green break is over, the blue break begins. When the blue break is over, the red break begins. The first stop for each employee should be the Credit Union to deposit their checks. Encourage your students to: Volunteer at the Volunteer Center Purchase their stamp at the Distribution Hub during the first or second break. Pre-purchase a newspaper. During this time the Mayor or Distribution Hub Owner may come by to pick up the check for the Rent or Taxes. If these checks are ready, the Accountant may give them to the appropriate person. When the Materials check is ready, the Owner may take it to the Distribution Hub. City Check Up After all the citizens have had their first break, the city will shut down for a citywide check up. All the students will come out of their shop with their checkbooks and a pencil. At this time, you will check to make sure they have recorded any transactions in their check registry and help them prepare their next Credit Union deposit slip. They do not have to take out any cash with this deposit if they do not wish to. Lunch/Second Shopping Break The shopping break process starts again. This time the break is 30 minutes long to give students time to eat lunch and shop. Students need to make their second Credit Union deposit before they eat lunch. Lunches are allowed in the Community Center or Café tables only. No food is allowed in the shops. Adults may eat in the Community Center or in the conference room. As with the morning break, when all three color breaks are over, the city will shut down for the second Check Up. Employees can complete their final deposit slips. Volunteers need to review checkbooks to assure no one is overdrawn and all checks have been recorded. The owner needs to pick up the second distribution of merchandise between 12:00-12:30. Help students discuss when to raise or lower prices. Prices may be changed at any time by using the pricing box. MarketPlace Grand Prairie GPISD pg 5
The Accountant should finish typing all the checks including the Payroll 2 and Payroll 3 checks. During the day, the shop owner will be making deposits to pay off the commercial loan as the shop sells enough items to have a payment. Payments may be made at the commercial Credit Union entrance at any time. The Ad Agents for the Newspaper, Radio Station and WebDesign will visit each shop to collect the advertising checks and advertisements. The advertisements will be in the shop envelope. Third Shopping Break ***IMPORTANT PRICING TIP*** The third shopping break sees the most purchasing. Students have been paid all three payroll checks and have the most purchasing power. This is not the time to lower prices! Help students talk about the most popular items and when to raise or lower prices. Remember, only one item may be $2.00 The third shopping break is 15 minutes long. Students need to deposit their checks, shop and have the opportunity to volunteer. Encourage students to spend all of their income. They cannot use their MarketPlace money once they have left the city. The color breaks are in the same order. It is very important that students deposit their checks at the beginning of the break. As soon as the DJ announces that the last break is over, the city is closed. The shop owners need to make their final Credit Union deposit just before the city closes. Shut Down During this time, the shop needs to be readied for the next group. Follow these shut down steps: 1. Make sure the Owner has made the final Credit Union deposit. If you were a shop that took cash, you should leave 12 quarters ($3) in your cash box and deposit the remainder. It is very important that all deposits be made. MarketPlace Grand Prairie GPISD pg 6
2. Return all unsold merchandise in the white wire tub to the Distribution Hub. 3. Do not return the item you choose to raffle. Bring the raffle box and item to the Town Hall Meeting. 4. Return all pricing tags to the pricing box. 5. Clean the area to insure that nothing is left by an employee. All students should remain in the shops until they are called for the Town Hall Meeting. Make sure students take their checkbooks, purchased merchandise, etc to the Town Hall Meeting. Afternoon Town Hall Meeting At the afternoon Town Hall Meeting, the mayor will give the State of the City Address. A Credit Union President will recognize the Grant Award winners (shops that did not take out a loan), the shops that paid off their loans, and award the Profit Award to the shops that made the most profit. Following the awards, the TV Station will show the video they made of the day. During the Town Hall meeting, the MarketPlace staff is reconciling the accounts of all the students in the city. If students have overdrawn their accounts, they are called to the Credit Union. The merchandise they purchase is theirs to keep if they have not overdrawn their account. At the end of the Town Hall Meeting, your day at MarketPlace is complete. Please accept our thanks for a wonderful day and a memorable field trip for the students. Please take the time to complete the Volunteer Survey in the front of the binder. The survey helps the MarketPlace staff to better prepare the next group of volunteers to insure everyone has a great day at MarketPlace! MarketPlace Grand Prairie GPISD pg 7
