A combination of three complementar y purification technologies produces optimum quality analyticalgrade water: pretreatment, advanced reverse osmosis and finally EMD Millipore s patented Elix electrodeionization process. One of the most important stages in the water purification system is the pretreatment of the potable water, as this first stage ensures that all subsequent purification processes operate reliably and consistently: Using water analysis and local municipal water quality information, EMD Millipore tailors the pretreatment to the particular feed water at each location. Every system incorporates a comprehensive three-stage pretreatment pack that ensures protection of the RO membrane against scaling and fouling. The advanced reverse osmosis step provides 2 major benefits: High water recovery Constant product flow rate In the third purification step, the Elix module removes the remaining ions. EMD Millipore Progard pretreatment pack A composite disposable pack which includes the following components: 1. Granular activated carbon to remove chlorine and organic contamination in the potable water supply, protecting RO membranes from damage and fouling. 2. Polyphosphate sequestering agent to reduce scaling potential of the potable water, which protects the RO membrane from fouling by the formation of scale. 3. Depth Filtration (0.5 μm) to remove particulate and colloidal contamination, preventing fouling of the RO membrane. 2

High reliability & maintenance EMD Millipore s water purification solutions have been designed to minimize the time required to maintain the system. EMD Millipore s self-regenerating Elix electrodeionization process requires no maintenance. There are no deionization packs to replace. RO membrane cleaning is carried out automatically when pretreatment packs are exchanged on Elix 20, 35, 70 and 100 systems. Pre-treatment packs are mounted conveniently on the exterior of the water system s cabinet, making exchange quick and easy. Reliability is at the heart of the design. However, should a problem occur, the fault can be easily identified thanks to the Elix system s comprehensive error menu, combined with water quality monitoring at every stage. This often allows solutions to be provided immediately by phone. Should a service visit be required, this fault diagnosis ensures that the engineer is well prepared with information and any parts required, thereby ensuring a First-Time-Fix at most visits. 4
Predictable & economical running costs Managing budgets and accurately forecasting future expenditure is a growing need for clinical laboratories. The incorporation of EMD Millipore s patented Elix self-regenerating deionization process minimizes variation in running costs over the lifetime of the system. The Elix Electrodeionization process (EDI) deionizes water with no replaceable items. This process uses a low power electrical field and a series of ion-exchange resins and ion selective membranes to continuously deionize water. The Elix process itself requires no routine running costs throughout the lifetime of the system.
