EXHIBIT A PARENT NOTIFICATION LETTER REGARDING READING SELECTIONS Dear Parent/Guardian: This year your student will read various literature selections in his/her English course. HPISD teachers and administrators have selected these titles based on quality and literary characteristics to enrich and support the grade-level teaching of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for English Language Arts. As the parent/guardian, you are receiving a course overview with a list of titles that have been approved for use in your child s English class. Some reading selections, especially those for AP courses which deal with collegelevel material, may contain mature content. Book selections and links to a text rationale for each title can be viewed on the Highland Park ISD Secondary English Language Arts website at the following URL: http://hphsweb.hpisd.org/departments/academicdepartments/english.aspx Because of the varied interests, abilities, and maturity levels of students, it is the parent/ guardian s responsibility to determine which titles from this list his/her child may not read.
