From the English word potash (pot ashes) and the Arabic word qali meaning alkali. The origin of the symbol K comes from the Latin word kalium. Potassium is one of the three essential macro nutrients. Although is not an integral part of cell structure, Potassium regulates many metabolic processes required for growth, fruit and seed development. It is essential for photosynthesis, protein synthesis, enzymes activation and regulates opening and closing of stomata. Potassium increases disease resistance, drought tolerance, gives plumpness to grain and seed, and improves stem rigidity and cold hardiness. It improves crop quality by enhancing firmness, texture, flavor, size and color of fruits and increasing the oil content of oil crops.
