J s Jottings From time to time you will see this jottings section in your church bulletin. My intent is to share thoughts and information with you in this space as is appropriate and/or necessary. With this first instalment I would like to reiterate what I said during a worship service recently. Please come and say hello when I am at the church office. I will appreciate meeting you. My rule of thumb is that if my office door is open, feel free to come in and introduce yourself. However, if it is closed, it will mean one of two things: I will either be in a time of prayer or be busy studying (yes, even us retired guys need study time!). Lunch today after the Morning Service Everyone is invited to Lunch today after the morning service and coffee time! The lunch is hosted by Elders Sandy V and Affie D and their Care Groups. Listening Forum: Monday, May 9 at 7.00 pm at Duncan CRC. You are invited to participate in a listening forum regarding events of the past several months related to staffing decisions and actions taken. The purpose of the forum is to listen to each other with respect to feelings and concerns that need to be expressed. It is important that we take this opportunity to listen to one another in the hope that it will be a first step in beginning to bring healing and, where appropriate, reconciliation. In preparation for this forum, please PRAY daily for the guidance of the Holy Spirit not only for the meeting but for yourself personally. Pastor Henry Jonker will moderate this forum. A note from the deacons At the last congregational meeting refugee sponsorship was discussed. It was decided that we would host a refugee family rather than sponsor one. The difference being that a sponsorship cost about +$30,00.00 and hosting would require helping a family settle into the Cowichan Valley and help with expenses the government doesn't cover. Both would require a commitment of at least a year. In order for us, as a church, to do this, we will need people who are passionate about this type of outreach. If you are one of these people please contact any of the deacons and we can begin to look for a place for a family. We will need about 10-12 people. Thank you in advance. The deacons. Coffee Break Celebrates 30 Years at the Duncan CRC For 30 years God has been blessing Coffee Break in this church! We started in the old church basement with Story Hour upstairs - very crowded! Imagine how excited we were when we moved to the new church! Much has happened over the years. Many women have come and studied the Bible in small groups. Many children in Story Hour heard about Jesus and his love for them. Seeds were planted. We are thankful for all the volunteers who helped with the program and looked after the little ones! We plan to have a 30th anniversary celebration on Thursday May 12th from 10-12 p.m. ALL WOMEN who have ever been involved in Coffee Break/Story Hour whether helping in the nursery, Little Lambs, Bible study, to join us for a fun morning of activities, reminiscing, food and fellowship. Hope to see you there! For all you readers of Dutch Books Help yourself to the books on the table in the Foyer.

There are no restrictions on your ideas and creativity! Everything is eligible, including pregnancy centres, music schools, day camps, drop-in centres and community cafés. Ministries must seek to be a part of long-term, sustainable change in the lives of people in the community. For further information on Operation Manna s funding guidelines, types of funding available, conditions for funding, and timelines for applications, please read: Operation Manna Guidelines May 2014 (PDF) http://diaconalministries.com/operation-manna/ Equipping Deacons The church does not simply have deacons, but is, by its very nature and calling a diaconate. The call of deacons is to motivate and mobilize the congregation for works of service (diakonia). Deacons are members appointed by the church to minister mercy, justice and Christian love to the church and all people. Deacons assess needs, promote stewardship and hospitality, collect and disburse resources for benevolence, and develop programs of assistance. But the calling of deacons is not simply to perform those services on behalf of the church. Rather, the deacon s role is to equip, empower and enable the whole church to live out its diaconal calling.
